I m p r e s s i o n i s m Before, During and After. I am Mr. Lanni, Art Teacher and your tour guide. I will lead you through this presentation which highlights a few artists from this period. Each slide contains a link for more information.

F r e n c h P a i n t i n g The only respected art during the 1700s and early 1800s were realistic paintings of Classical Roman Scenes, Religious Scenes or History paintings. The painting on the left is by French artist Jaques Louis David This painting shows 3 Roman soldiers leaving their father to go off and fight The painting on the right by French artist Ernest Messioner shows Napolean leaving battle

Paris, France in the Mid 1800s Many people left their farms to move to Paris for work, making it a bustling city of 2 million people. Cafes began opening all over Paris The Moulin Rouge Cabaret show became popular Photography was introduced to the public in Paris in 1839 In 1840 the invention of oil paints in metal tubes allowed artists to work outdoors I am a Photograph from Paris, France 1841.

E d o u a r d M a n e t Edouard Manet is considered the artist who paved the way for the Impressionists My girlfriend & I were painted with broad brushstrokes Manet painted scenes of people like us from everyday Paris life He took his supplies to cafes & painted people like me Manet started cropping images in his paintings similar to those in the recently invented photograph

Beginning of Impressionism The Impressionists were a group of Artists in Paris France in the late 1800 s This painting is called Impression Sunrise by Claude Monet. The Impressionists got the name of their group from this painting. Impressionists were inspired by Manet s Modern pictures and broad brushstrokes They often painted outside and were most concerned with painting the effects of light They exhibited on their own because they were rejected from the main Paris exhibit called the Salon

This presentation was created by Joe Lanni C l a u d e M o n e t Monet is one of the most popular Impressionists He was known for painting the same subject at different times of day to capture the different effects of light The painting on the left is Rouen Cathedral in Full Light The painting on the right is the same building painted with different colors to reflect the time of day

C a m i l l e P i s s a r o This painting is called Boulevard Montmartre in the Winter Pissaro painted his surroundings and loved capturing the effects of light in the Impressionist style He was older than the other artists and they looked up to him as a father figure

P i e r r e - A u g u s t e R e n o i r Renoir painted many pictures of women using soft colors He is quoted saying to his art dealer, I want to paint stunning pictures that you can sell for very high prices

M a r y C a s s a t t This painting is called Children on The Beach and was painted in 1884 Mary was an American who lived in Paris She loved to paint pictures of woman and children She exhibited with the Impressionists The Impressionists were thought to be radical for letting women paint with them. Most women did not work in the 1800 s

P o s t I m p r e s s i o n i s m Post Impressionism began in the 1880 s The artists were influenced by the Impressionists The Post Impressionists often used brighter colors and showed more emotion in their work

V i n c e n t V a n G o g h The painting on the left is called Starry Night Vince tried to show motion in the sky rather than an actual scene He also tried to show the bright stars at night Van Gogh was a very depressed man. He does not look too happy in the self portrait above I painted all the time but never sold anything. My brother Theo supported me so I could continue painting. I had a close relationship with my brother.

V i n c e n t V a n G o g h Poor Van Gogh went insane Yes, Van Gogh cut part of his own ear off Why you ask? Van Gogh was mentally ill This is a Self Portrait afterwards He was put in an insane asylum While in the asylum he kept painting He painted pictures of the doctors, nurses and the hospital itself Above is a picture of the hospital corridor and to the right is a picture of trees on the hospital grounds Eventually Van Gogh killed himself

P a u l This presentation was created by Joe Lanni C e z a n n e He is famous for saying, I will astonish all of Paris with an apple. Cezanne painted with the Impressionists and continued to paint many paintings after them as a Post Impressionist He produced still life and landscape paintings using simple geometric shapes

G e o r g e s S e u r a t Seurat was inspired by the way the Impressionists placed unmixed paint on the canvas He was also interested in science and color theory He applied paint as little dots of color Painting with dots of paint is called pointillism The picture looks blurry up close and becomes clear from a distance Magazines are printed using this same science If you look at a magazine under a magnifying glass you will see little dots of color

I m p r e s s i o n i s m Before, During and After. That concludes this presentation on the Impressionism and Post Impressionism. Check out the links on each slide to learn more about these artists and many others who worked during this period.
