A Word from the Author Christmas is coming and turning the calendar to December 1 signals that it s just around the corner! To get ready for December 25, it takes more than buying and wrapping presents. It takes preparation of our hearts. The daily devotions walk you through the Christmas story in sequence and conclude with the birth of Jesus right on Christmas Day. Let a parallel journey of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the angels, and wise men inspire you along with a contemporary inspirational thought for your day. Prepare Your Heart One of my favorite topics in a holiday speech I give is to take a look at how Christmas changed each nativity figure. I ve included that short segment, Christmas is All about a Changed Heart, before the daily devotions so you can get a glimpse of how God might be working in your life this season. The birth of Jesus is all about changed lives then and now. Prepare Your Home Nothing is too big in itself to prepare for the holidays; it s the number of little things that accumulate at the end that stress us out. To overcome that I ve included a simple chart each day for 1-3 easy tasks of your choice, such as pick up stamps, invite friends to a concert, or wrap three gifts. If you do one small task a day in December, you will have 25 done by Christmas; two tasks a day finishes 50 by Christmas; and three tasks a day completes 75 by Christmas! For sure you will be ready for Christmas if you don t procrastinate. Now it s time to begin reading so you can be prepared and calm all of December. Have a wonderful holiday season preparing your heart and home for Christmas! Warmly, Marcia Ramsland, The Organizing Pro 6
Dedication This book is dedicated... To you, my friend, preparing your heart and home for Christmas, To future grandchildren who will add excitement to Christmas morning, To the Reason for the Season for the miracle of Christmas we celebrate each year. Christmas is a gift. Let it touch your heart with new meaning this year! 4
December 1 The First Christmas This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18 T he beginning of the Christmas story describes the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. At first glance, it appears that there are two important people in the birth of Jesus Mary his mother and Joseph, whom she was engaged to. The birth of Jesus had special circumstances which is where the story takes an interesting turn. God intervened and the miracle of the first Christmas begins with Jesus birth. Each day in December, we will watch this story unfold and relive those events. This is one way to prepare our heart for Christmas to read and think about the greatest gift in history which we celebrate on December 25. Today like long ago, focus on the special miracles of God s purposes and presence around you as you gather your Christmas presents and decorate your home. There is a plan and a purpose for you this holiday season, just as there was 2,000 years ago. Dear God, Today as I work on preparing my heart and home for Christmas, may I reflect on the events of the first Christmas and find strength in knowing you have a special plan for my holidays this year. Amen 10

December 2 Quiet at the Holidays Because Joseph her husband (Mary s) was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:19-21 One of the quieter figures in the Christmas story is Joseph who was engaged to Mary. History hinged on his character and important decision once he heard that Mary was expecting a child. In Bible times, he could have ended the engagement to not cause Mary public shame. While he pondered what to do in this life-changing dilemma, an angel from God appeared to him in a dream, called him by name, and told him not to be afraid because God had a divine birth planned through Mary. The angel went on to say Mary was to give birth to the child and Joseph was to call him Jesus. Tomorrow we ll find out what Joseph did. Today think about the quiet people in your family and world struggling with big decisions, unexpected events in their lives, or difficulties. Pray for one person you know who struggles this holiday season. Dear God, Today I want to keep up on my own plans, but help me to see who to pray for that is struggling in their life. Give (name) wisdom and peace in this season. Amen 12
Take Action What three simple things could you do today for your holiday preparations? Today s Holiday To Do s 3 Easy Steps Done #1 #2 #3 Holiday Tip #2 Keep your Christmas cards simple with one card design and review your address list to know how many stamps, cards, and return address labels to gather. Once you gather these three things, enjoy thinking about the people you are sending them to. 13
December 3 Rise to the Occasion All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel which means, God with us. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. Matthew 1:22-25 J oseph woke up from his dream and did what the angel told him to not be afraid and to take Mary as his wife and name the baby Jesus. He was a man of high character and protected Mary until she gave birth to the baby Jesus. What a special position he held as an important, yet background person in the Christmas story. You, too, may feel like a successful holiday season depends on you, and yet you are a background person. That s sometimes the way it is. We do all the preparations and the people we provide for are the featured players. That s ok. God notices and you are appreciated and vital to a meaningful holiday season. Did you notice that these verses explain the meaning of Emmanuel as God with us? That s our focus to remember today - we re not alone in our preparations, God is with us. Dear God, Thank you for the example of Joseph doing what you wanted him to. Help me be as responsive and rise to the occasion to do my part in this year s holiday events, remembering that you are with me. Amen 14
Take Action What three simple things could you do today for your holiday preparations? Today s Holiday To Do s 3 Easy Steps Done #1 #2 #3 Holiday Tip #3 Setup up a Gift Wrap Center, or box, with the seven supplies wrapping paper, tissue paper, tags, bows or ribbons, scissors, tape, and a working pen. Wrap as you bring gifts home. 15
Celebrate the True Meaning of Christmas Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11 Remember God s desire is to make Christmas not just an event, but a relationship with Jesus every day of the year. Christmas is all about the good news of a changed heart. 62
Christmas is All about a Changed Heart What is your heart like today as you think about Christmas? Are you concerned about the people you will get together with, anxious about the numerous preparations you have to make, or longing to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas? The six traditional figures in the nativity scene experienced a change of heart because of Christmas. You, too, can have a changed heart such as the examples below. 1. Mary Began Christmas with a Troubled Heart God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin The virgin s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. Then Mary Celebrated Christmas with a Willing Heart The angel said to her you will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered, May it be to me as you have said. Then the angel left her. Luke 1: Joseph Began Christmas with a Righteous Heart Mary was engaged to Joseph, but was found to be with child. Joseph was a righteous man and planned to put her away quietly until an angel appeared to him in a dream. Then Joseph Celebrated Christmas with an Obedient Heart When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded Him and took Mary home as his wife. Matthew 1:20, The Shepherds Began Christmas with Fearful Hearts An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and they were terrified 8
Then Shepherds Celebrated Christmas with Believing Hearts The shepherds said to one another Let s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that was happened. When they saw the child, they spread the word concerning what had been told them The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen. Luke 2: The Angel Gabriel Began Christmas with a Calm Heart The angel said to them, Do not be afraid...today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. Then the Angels Celebrated Christmas with Singing Hearts Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests. Luke 2: The Inn Keeper Began Christmas with a Frazzled Heart there was no room for them in the inn. The Inn Keeper Celebrated Christmas with a Helpful Heart So they (the shepherds) hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. Luke 2:6, The Wise Men Began Christmas with Inquiring Hearts Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east Then Wise Men Celebrated Christmas with Generous Hearts The star stopped over the place where the child was They bowed down and worshipped him opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and myrrh. Matthew 2:1-12 Remember God s desire is to make Christmas not just an event, but a relationship with Him every day of the year. Christmas is all about your heart.
