BASIC TECHNIQUE 1 - Select image: white areas will be transparent, image will be reversed (including text), color of surface will affect finished transfer color 2- Cut or tear out image area: leave small amount of extra area around image to help when lifting off backing Note: torn edges will disappear more than cut edges, sometimes paper does not come off completely and shape of paper is viable 3- Plan image location: place image upside down, mark area with tape so you can quickly place image after applying medium Helpful: draw rough outline of image area / focal points in pencil on back of paper to visualize where the transfer will go 4- Coat image surface with medium: apply generously, QUICKLY (or medium will set image into the paper surface) 5- Quickly place image side down on surface: smooth and press image down firmly on surface to help image adhere (brayer, hands) 6- Carefully lift off backing after 3-5 minutes: test image by carefully lifting edge to see if image has transfered If image transfer is paper-based: 7- Wet back of transfer with water: sponge or spray bottle 8- With fingers, carefully rub off paper backing: apply more water as necessary to release paper 9- Finish with thin coat of medium or paint glaze: to make paper residue less viable if using Transparency Ink-jet Film and Gel Medium: 7-Carefully lift one edge (keep tape in position) to make sure image is transfered before lifting up transfer. 8- Can add more medium if parts of image not transfered, with image still in place, use artist tape to keep position stable *Ink-jet transfers: Ink-jet printouts or transparencies are water-soluble, use Golden Soft Gel Gloss Medium (in jar) to prevent running of image, if paper ink-jet transfer, be careful when using water to release paper backing, ink may smear beyond transfer.

Inexpensive, works well to layer with acrylic medium Spray Paint: Montana Gold, or Hardware brand (water-based) Chalk Pastels or Charcoal, Graphite Sticks, Conte Crayon: NOT oil pastels Objects to create textures: Stencils, toys, objects with interesting textures, shape, create paper shapes BASIC TECHNIQUE - SPRAY PAINT ON TRACING PAPER 1 - Select Colors: 2-5 work best, range of light, medium, dark 2- Place objects/stencils on tracing paper: start with composition, can move objects while spraying in layers to create different effects, try keeping some objects in place, moving others to create visual movement 3- Spray colors on tissue (OR spray directly on work in progress): using 2 colors for same areas with objects in 2 slightly different direction creates subtle depth effects, can turn tracing paper over to use other side for different effects, experiment, do several, play! 4- Select ares of tissue to use: can tear or cut tissue, can combine different elements from different tissues 5- Apply Acrylic Medium to back of paper surface or/and surface area: apply medium quickly, press smoothly from center of piece out to edges, keeping surface as smooth as possible. 6- Let tissue dry before adding additional layers: paper may develop waves while drying, most will smooth out after medium is dry. RUBBINGS / STAMPS ON TRACING PAPER 1- Tear or cut tissue, place texture objects under paper: sponge or spray bottle 2- Use chalk pastels, graphite, etc. to rub surface of the paper to create texture: be aware of stroke direction and texture 3- Apply Workable Infinitive Spray on rubbings: to keep texture from smearing when using medium to layer into piece 4- Try rubber stamps or textured objects with paint to create impressions on tissue: can use both sides of paper for depth 5-6 Same as above

Logic: Goals complete, evaluation by design principles, out of time/energy (taking a break) Intuition: Gut: A painting is never done, it just stops in interesting places. Surface Sealing SURFACE REFLECTION Variety and unity Difference in reflective nature of elements can create depth, variety. An even surface helps to create unity and eliminate separation from individual elements. Matte > Satin > Gloss Surface reflection affects color perception, and overall impression of a finished piece. Matt sprays and varnishes create small surface irregularities to reduce reflection. Matt surface finishes can reduce depth in dark areas by preventing light from being completely absorbed, and reduce lightness of metallics by cutting down on reflection, and a softer feel. Gloss sprays and varnishes create a even surface that can emphasize contrast between light and dark areas, and creates a harder feel. Gloss surface finishes can create light glare that can be distracting. Satin sprays and varnishes (my usual choice) can be a compromise between the benefits and possible disadvantages of matte and gloss finishes. There are many good finishing products, these are my current favorites. Workable Fixative: for areas with pastel, charcoal, pencil, non-permanent ink Spray: Golden Archival Varnish (Satin): to help with fading for inks in printed collage elements, to even out reflective surface, remove extra shine from small areas, as well as an overall finish seal. Liquid Varnishes: to seal, even surface reflections These 2 products work well together: Golden Self-Leveling Clear Gel: to seal, protect delicate elements, and help create more even surface Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Satin): to thin Golden Self-Leveling Gel, and help reduce surface shine Wide Brush: soft bristle, or foam brush Glue: PVA (used for bookbinding & paper projects) BASIC TECHNIQUE - SEALING Important: review directions for all finishing products before using on finished piece, and do a test sample. 1 - Test sample: test finishing materials on a small sample with similar materials - can be discarded scraps from working on the piece 2 - Fix any areas with pastel, pencil, pen, or charcoal: use spray fixative before applying any liquid finishing product 3 - Glue edges of applied elements: look from side to see any raised edges 3 - Sprays: use as overall final finish, OR spray on select areas of piece to even reflections 4 - Sides - Liquids / Gels: raise up piece on supports to prevent drips from sides to stick to work area, apply to sides first 5 - Apply liquid or gel to surface with wide, soft brush: apply quickly to prevent visible brush strokes, in strokes in same visual direction as elements in piece (helps any visible brush strokes be harmonious with finished piece)
