1 n2y news-2-you Volume XIII, Edition 21 WHAT BLACK HISTORY MONTH February is Black History Month. We celebrate the month in America and Canada. * + African Americans have changed our lives. Black History Month tells their stories. * The United Kingdom celebrates Black History Month in October. page 1

2 news page America celebrates other people with special months. Jewish American Heritage Month is in May. Asian Americans also celebrate in May. Hispanic Americans celebrate September 15 - October Black History Month is a special month in America. page 2

3 news page Black History Month began as Negro History Week. * One 1 man, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, saw a problem. Dr. Woodson, a teacher, read many history books. The books did not talk about African Americans. Dr. Woodson wanted Americans to know their story. * The word negro was an accepted reference to the black race until the 1960s. Today, African American is preferred. page 3

4 news page Dr. Woodson began to write the story. He started a magazine, The Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he started Negro History Week Negro History Week was the second week in February. The week was special to African Americans. page 4

5 news page Two famous Americans were born that week. 2 One was President Abraham Lincoln. 1 President Lincoln ended slavery in America. The second man was Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass gave speeches against slavery. page 5

6 news page Dr. Woodson s idea grew and grew. + African Americans had many stories to tell. The stories told about black heroes and black history. + In 1976, President Gerald Ford wanted more Black History Week became Black History Month. page 6

7 news page Every year, Black History Month has a new theme. famous women, Some themes were: businesses, colleges and religions. The 2011 theme is African Americans and the Civil War America s Civil War began in 1861, 150 years ago page 7

8 people in the news WHO DR. CARTER G. WOODSON ( ) Dr. Woodson is called the Father of Black History. He was born in Virginia, ten years after the Civil War. 10 As a young man, he mined coal in West Virginia. In 1903, he went to college in Kentucky He taught school in the Philippines for three years. 3 page 8

9 people in the news Dr. Woodson went back to college at Harvard University. After graduating, he taught history at Harvard. Dr. Woodson was proud of African Americans. He wanted Americans to learn about black history. Dr. Woodson s dream is today s Black History Month. page 9

10 people in the news WHO FREDERICK DOUGLASS ( ) Frederick Douglass always worked for justice. Frederick was born a slave in Maryland. He taught himself to read and write. + In 1838, Frederick ran away from his white owner He escaped to New York City and began a new life. + page 10

11 people in the news Frederick moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts. He gave many speeches against slavery. Frederick wrote books and toured Europe for two years. + 2 He became the most famous black man in America. Frederick asked his country to end all slavery. page 11

12 people in the news During the Civil War, Frederick helped African American soldiers. His son was a soldier in the Union Army. After the war, Frederick continued to speak. Frederick argued for a new group of people. He joined the fight for women to vote. page 12

13 places in the news WHERE NEW YORK CITY S HARLEM Harlem is America s most famous black neighborhood. Harlem is in New York City, on Manhattan Island. The Dutch settled Harlem in The neighborhood grew with New York City. Many black Americans began to move there. page 13
