2 I ve included 2 biography reports. These would be great to use for Black History Month, President s Day, Women s History, or ect. Rubric for Biography 1. When was your person born? 2. Why is your person important? 3. Write three important facts about your person. 4. Closing Sentence 5. Where did you get your information?

3 Biography Lesson 1 Objective: Students will write a biography. 2.W.2 Write informative texts to introduce topic, use facts and definitions and provide conclusion. W.2.5 Topic, revise and edit Materials: Biography to read to class Examples of biography books or biography articles Biography reproducible Model/Instruct Today we will learn about biographies. A biography is a book that is written about a famous person s life. A biography includes important facts such as a person s childhood and family life, what they did for a living, their accomplishments or why they are famous, and other interesting facts. Often the writer will tell you why they chose to write about this person. Guided Writers ask many questions about the person and then they do research to find out the facts. They might ask where and when the person was born, and what their family life was like growing up. Next they might ask what the person did for a living or what kind of work they did. Writers also ask about why the person is famous. What were their accomplishments or what did they do that was important? Why were they important? Read a biography to the class. What was the author s purpose for writing this story? Put a biography organizer on chart paper or the overhead, ask students about the book to fill it in. The writer may add an opinion about the famous person to a biography. An opinion tells how the writer feels about the famous person. An opinion is not a fact because it is what the writer thinks or feels. A fact is something that is true and can be proven. Today we learned the purpose of a biography. Do we write a biography to tell about the life of a famous person or to teach how to do something? We also learned that a biography includes important facts about a famous person s life. Also, some writers may include their opinions about the famous person in the biography. This lesson was adapted from FreeReading

Yes, biographies tell about the lives of famous people. We also learned that a biography includes important facts such as the person s childhood and family life, what they did for a living, their accomplishments or why they are famous, and other interesting facts. Today we will use this web to write some biography facts together. We will use facts about me! I may not be famous everywhere, but I am famous enough in this room. You can ask me questions to find out the information that we need to complete the web. Guided Read a biography to the class. What was the author s purpose for writing this story? Put the biography organizer on chart paper or the overhead. The first part of the organizer is about the person s childhood. This part includes facts about where and when the person was born. Lets fill in this section together. Finish filling in the rest of the web with the class. Now that we have filled in all the other facts, we need to add an opinion. This part is entitled My Opinion. This is where you will add your opinion about the famous person. Remember that an opinion is how you feel or think. Who can give me an opinion to put in this section? Independent Give the students a web to start their biography. Today we used a web to write some biographical facts and an opinion. Start to think about what kind of person you would like to know more about. This lesson was adapted from FreeReading
