1 Samuel ; ; (Samuel) Page 2 of 7 Note the theme of the barren woman who has a child in answer to prayer. Which women earlier in the biblical story fit into this category? 1 Samuel (Saul) According to 1 Samuel 8, why do the people ask for a king? 1 Samuel What is the reason for God s rejection of Saul as king in 1 Sam ? What about in 1 Samuel 15? 1 Samuel (Samuel Anoints David) Note the theme of God s choice of the youngest and least likely over the older sons. Which other younger brothers were chosen to bring about God s purposes? It is important to remember that in ancient Mediterranean culture, for God to choose the younger over the older was to violate the way things ought to be. 1 Samuel (David in Saul s Service) What absolutely necessary component of success does Saul lack after 1 Sam ? In 1 Sam , David is called a man of valor, a warrior. What does David now have that Saul lacks? 1 Samuel 17 (David and Goliath) Look at the map of the Battle of Elah on page 519 of the ESV Study Bible. Notice that the Philistines are trying to make inroads into Israelite territory. How did David manage to kill the warrior who was much better, and better armed, than he? According to the map on page 519, after the defeat of Goliath, David and the Israelites chase the Philistines almost 10 miles into their own territory.
1 Samuel (Death of Saul and Jonathan) Page 3 of 7 1 Samuel is occupied with the adventures of David in Saul s court, his friendship with Jonathan (Saul s son), his flight to avoid Saul s search parties, his adventures as the leader of an outlaw band, and his alliance with the Philistines. Finally, the Philistines unite their forces and attack Israel at Mt. Gilboa (31.1), killing three of Saul s sons. Saul himself is killed and their bodies are mutilated and displayed on the wall of what Philistine city? 2 Samuel (David s Rise to Power) In the civil war between David s forces and the forces of Saul s legitimate successor, be sure that you have the characters in the story straight. (For each of the following questions, circle the correct answer.) Who is commander of Saul s army in the civil war? Who is Saul s surviving son who inherited the kingship? Which is the tribe that rebelled against the house of Saul, with David as their leader? Where is David s headquarters while he rules over one tribe? Who is commander of David s army in the civil war? What event results in the acceptance of David s kingship by the other remaining tribes of Israel? What is the name of the city that David captured and made his permanent capital?
2 Samuel (David and Bathsheba) What is odd about 2 Sam. 11.1? Page 4 of 7 Is anything said about Bathsheba s feelings toward David? Why does David call Uriah home from the battle front? But Uriah refuses to go home and spend a night with his wife because his fellow soldiers are in the field. How is David finally able to bring Bathsheba into his harem officially? The story used by Nathan to condemn David out of his own mouth is famous. Be sure you can re-tell that story yourself. What is David s response to Nathan? What happens as a result of David s assassination of Uriah? On page 550 of the ESV Study Bible, you can see a map of Jerusalem as it was when David took the city. Eventually, Solomon would build a temple for the Lord on Mt. Moriah. What other important event had taken place on this mountain? 1 Kings (Death of David) Whom does David choose to succeed him? In 1 Kings 2.1-6, what does David really want Solomon to do about Joab? 1 Kings (Beginning of Solomon s Reign) Note Solomon s first political marriage, which makes an alliance with Egypt. This introduces the theme of the dangers of foreign wives that you will see repeated over and over in the story. What is it about Solomon s prayer that pleases the LORD? The story in 1 Kings is a very well-known story illustrating Solomon s wisdom. You should be able to recognize the story and its significance.
1 Kings (Solomon Dedicates the Temple) Solomon s prayer What role does the temple play with regard to prayer and its effectiveness? Page 5 of 7 Response of the LORD What does the LORD promise? What are the conditions and the warnings that accompany the promise? 1 Kings 11 (Solomon s Apostasy and Its Consequences) Why does the LORD become angry with Solomon? What promise does the LORD make to Jeroboam in 1 Kings 11:29-39? 1 Kings (Division of Solomon s Kingdom) Be sure you know the difference between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. What was Jeroboam s tribe? What was Jeroboam s job during the reign of Solomon? ( ) Which tribes are the house of Joseph? Note that by the time Solomon was doing this particular construction work in Jerusalem, his forced labor policies had changed (Compare with 1 Kings ). What was the change? In the division, the northern tribes go with Jeroboam and his house and the tribe of Judah sided with Rehoboam and his house. Which house ends up in control of Jerusalem (Davidic royal city)? Which house ends up in control of Shechem (site of covenant renewal ceremony) and Bethel (site of Jacob s dream of the ladder and the angels, and of Jacob s main altar)?
Page 6 of 7 Thus, the two kingdoms are dominated by the house of Joseph (Israel) and the house of David (Judah). What motivation does the biblical narrator give for Jeroboam setting up places of worship outside Jerusalem? What are the symbols of the LORD s presence in Jeroboam s worship centers? Where have you seen this before? This does not bode well for the future of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. 2 Kings 4-5 (Miracles of Elisha, Prophet of Israel) You should be able to retell the story of the following miracles: 2 Kings Miraculous provision of oil 2 Kings Shunammite woman s hospitality, miracle of a son who is miraculously raised from death 2 Kings Poison stew made safe 2 Kings Multiplication of the loaves 2 Kings Healing of enemy army commander (Naaman), Gehazi s deceit and punishment 2 Kings 16 We have skipped a lot of kings on from both Israel and Judah. Now you are about to read about the treaty between Judah and Assyria, and about the Assyrian conquest of (1) Aram (Syria, capital at Damascus) and (2) Israel (capital at Samaria). The alliance with Assyria prevents Judah from being conquered by Assyria, but the king of Judah makes changes in Judah s worship to please the king of Assyria. 2 Kings 17 (Fall of Israel to Assyria) According to this account, what is the origin of the Samaritans? According to the annotation on , what was wrong with the way the Samaritans worshiped God? Invasion of Judah by Assyria Assyria had made a treaty with Judah under King Ahaz. Why then did they invade Judah under King Hezekiah? (see 2 Kings 18.7). Read all of chapters This is an important moment in the history of Judah. As you will see in 2 Kings and Jeremiah, the promise of 2 Kings was misunderstood by a later generation of Judahites to be a promise that Jerusalem would never be destroyed. This misunderstanding led to a great deal of trouble for the Kingdom of Judah.
2 Kings Page 7 of 7 This section details the disastrous reigns of Manasseh and Amnon. Read 2 Kings and note the following definitions: The Temple: place where the God of the Kingdom of Judah was worshiped. High Priest: religious leader responsible for Temple worship. What does the high priest call the scroll that he brings to the king? Today, when people inquire of the Lord, they might seek guidance through prayer. However, Josiah s officials knew that they were being told to consult a prophet. Whom do they consult? In 2 Kings 23.2, what is the scroll called? 2 Kings (Babylonian Conquest of Judah) The final defeat of Judah takes place on the Plains of Jericho (2 Kings 25:5). What other important military event took place here? (You may need to look all the way back to the book of Joshua.) It appears that just as God gave the land to the Israelites, God will also take it away if the Israelites break the covenant with God. The Babylonians destroy the temple in 587 BCE (2 Kings 25:9). Where do the last of the Judeans go (voluntarily) into exile? (2 Kings 25:26) (Ironic, isn t it?)
