1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB TITLE: Knowledge Exchange Project Manager Business, Enterprise and Lifelong Learning 2. ROLE CODE: KEPMRKTO 3. DEPARTMENT: Research and Knowledge Transfer Office 4. ORGANISATION CHART: Reports to the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office 5. JOB PURPOSE: To liaise between the relevant academic Faculties and Departments on matters of: Researching and identifying appropriate proposal and tender opportunities in the area of Business, Enterprise and Lifelong Learning. Leading and project managing the preparation of proposals and tenders within academic areas to enhance business engagement, research and knowledge transfer. Managing and bringing new clients to the University under the research and knowledge transfer agenda. Development of marketing and website materials to support knowledge transfer. Establishing common ground for the development of research knowledge transfer with external partners in the area of business, enterprise and lifelong learning. Identifying areas of continuing professional development where the University might expand and enhance its contribution to business and management in the sub-region. Facilitating research and knowledge transfer in business, enterprise and lifelong learning in the University, working with academic and support staff from various disciplines. Enhancing the University s reputation as a supplier of business related services, particularly in the area of leadership and management development. 6. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: 7. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 7.1 Communication To communicate effectively and negotiate with businesses in order to develop knowledge transfer projects.

2 To clearly explain the details of potential collaboration between the University and the company, adapting language and communication style to suit the needs and understanding of the business. To prepare written proposals for funding to establish knowledge transfer opportunities between the University and the relevant organisation. To identify and communicate relevant responses, tools and techniques in the preparation of proposals and tender documents. To collaborate with University staff and external suppliers on the development of proposals and new business opportunities. 7.2 Teamwork and Motivation The role holder reports to the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office, taking cognisance of requirements in appropriate Faculties. The role holder will work independently and is therefore expected to be self-motivating. The role holder will need to develop effective working relationships with Deans of Faculty and academic staff throughout the University. The role holder will establish and work in teams in Faculties and with employers. 7.3 Liaison and Networking To liaise effectively with academic and administrative staff to promote the benefits of knowledge transfer activities for the University, external organisations and the member of staff. To liaise effectively with academic and administrative staff to write and project manage tenders and proposals to agreed deadlines. To identify and initiate contact with appropriate businesses and organisations and liaise effectively with them to facilitate collaboration and knowledge transfer between the University and the business. To work closely with the relevant Faculty, department or member of academic staff to ensure the knowledge transfer arrangement is appropriate and effective. To attend relevant knowledge transfer boards, committees and working parties to keep fully briefed on the University s Knowledge Transfer and Transfer agenda and to share information on activities. 7.4 Service Delivery To have a clear understanding of relevant companies and their business needs, particularly in the area of leadership and management development, to enable the effective identification and initiation of contact with appropriate industries. To produce high quality documentation in response to requests for proposals, tenders and services. To meet project and documentation deadlines. To pitch the saleable skills and services within the University effectively to relevant industries.

3 7.5 Decision Making To make both independent and collaborative decisions on appropriate organisations to approach and relevant services to offer. To make decisions as a member of knowledge transfer boards, committees and working parties. To provide advice and pitch ideas to Deans and Heads of Department who will ultimately take the decision on which projects to establish. 7.6 Planning and Organising Resources To identify internal and external resources required to meet project requirements. To ensure projects, proposals and tenders have been costed and priced in line with University policy and guidelines. To instigate projects though making the relevant contacts, matching the contact with the appropriate academic skill base, organising and leading meetings to enable the project to get established. To identify likely resources available from industry and respond with appropriate offers of services. To work closely with Faculties and departments to identify relevant aspects of academic skills and areas of interest that can be aligned with other areas to encourage interdisciplinary working. To obtain a clear understanding of individual academics skills and interests and match these with relevant projects and businesses, using the knowledge, experience and interest that exists within the University to maximum capacity. 7.7 Initiative and Problem Solving To research and identify income generation sources, including tender opportunities. To identify available funding and other sources of income appropriate to areas of research and interest already present within the University. To identify appropriate external partners and consultancy opportunities. To establish, organise and broker projects appropriate to the funding available. 7.8 Analysis and Research To research and identify appropriate proposals, tenders and business opportunities. To carry out research into appropriate companies to contact. To develop and maintain a database of project information. To investigate potential funding opportunities. To effectively identify areas of academic interest and identify where appropriate knowledge transfer links can be made. To liaise with Deans, sub-deans for Research and Department Heads on local research agendas while sustaining a site overview. 7.9 Sensory and Physical Demands The role holder is required to carry out tasks which require minimum of instruction or light physical effort.

4 7.10 Work Environment The role holder is office based with travel to different University sites and businesses required. A University vehicle will be provided when necessary for specific journeys. The role holder does not have any responsibility for the Health and Safety of others, beyond due care and diligence Pastoral Care and Welfare To show a basic sensitivity to those who may need help or, in extreme cases, are showing signs of obvious distress Team Development To develop the knowledge, confidence and capacity of academic and administrative staff to enable them to continue undertaking this work once the role holder s fixed term contract has ceased. To develop teams within industry for the mutual benefit of the company and the University Teaching and Learning Support To deliver one-off sessions for industry as required Knowledge and Experience The role holder should have been engaged in business development and/or a management post within a company or public service. Experience of producing tenders and/or proposals is desirable. 6 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER OFFICE KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE PROJECT MANAGER BUSINESS, ENTERPRISE AND LIFELONG LEARNING ONE YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT SALARY SCALE University Scale OS10, points 35-39, 34,607-38,951 per annum payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK Monday to Thursday 9.00am pm Friday 9.00am pm A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years), rising to 27 days after five years' continuous service. Two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualifications as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University is an admitted body to the Cheshire local government pension scheme. All support staff are eligible for membership of the scheme, and upon appointment, will be asked to indicate whether or not they wish to join the scheme.
