Cullwick, Vice-President, Leadership and Human Resources Research, The Conference Board of Canada Over the 25 years that the Conference Board has been tracking strategic HR priorities, performance management systems have perennially ranked near the top. However, despite this focus on performance management, organizations never seem to get it quite right. As well, traditional paradigms in performance management are changing radically in response to employee disengagement, millennial rebellion, and new research on what actually motivates performance. How can performance management systems better harmonize needs for individual growth and organizational outcomes? Can we design systems that better harness the synergies of teams and meet the needs of different employee segments? With all the responsibilities heaped on managers shoulders, how can we leverage technology to ensure that user interfaces are simple and genuinely helpful? Join Ian Cullwick as he highlights the latest Conference Board research and shares his insights on emerging trends in performance management. 3
4 May 21, :30 a.m. Plenary Session 2 Case Study: CONEXUS Credit Union Laurie Johnson, Executive Vice-President, Human Resources, CONEXUS Credit Union At the root of great performance is a sustaining organizational culture that nurtures and empowers people to succeed. At CONEXUS Credit Union, member service is a top priority and central to the co-operative s success. Employees often have a difficult time making the link between the work they do and the organization s enterprise-wide performance objectives, mission, and values. Hear from Laurie Johnson, as she shares how this Best 50 Employer has revamped its performance management program, focusing first on clarifying values and being more intentional about supporting behaviours. This helped employees to better understand how the way in which they achieve their objectives drives the company s success. Laurie will also discuss how the introduction of monthly manager and employee performance discussions are helping to change the performance management process from a semi-annual administrative need to do to an opportunity for coaching and listening resulting in improved performance. 10:15 a.m. Networking Break 10:30 a.m. Plenary Session 3 Reinvent Performance Management with the Brain in Mind Beth Jones, Lead Consultant, NeuroLeadership Group Performance management continues to be one of the most universally challenging activities, with many companies losing what seems like a whole quarter of productivity at review time. Over the past decade, NeuroLeadership has been exploring the deeper biology behind organizational change, effective leadership, and performance management. It provides hard science to support individual needs for constructive feedback and growth as well as previously considered soft skills for leaders so that, in the end, employees and organizations needs are both met. 4
5 May 21, 2014 During this interactive workshop-style session, Beth Jones will share findings emerging from the latest NeuroLeadership research and show how it can be used to significantly improve performance management outcomes in organizations. Leveraging experiential methods and tools, participants will learn new ways to maximize mental resources, deal with emotions at work, drive engagement, and grow talent. 12:00 p.m. Networking Luncheon 1:00 p.m. Plenary Session 4 Providing Feedback that Drives Performance Among a Multigenerational Workforce Giselle Kovary, Managing Partner, n-gen People Performance Inc. Many leaders struggle with finding the most effective way to provide performance feedback and coaching especially when it comes to their Gen Y employees. Join Giselle Kovary, as she highlights how leaders must adapt their approach in order to focus on the art of performance management by providing feedback and coaching that motivates the different generations. Learn how to manage millennials in a way that you were never managed yourself! 1:45 p.m. Plenary Session 5 How to Help Managers Build Their Feedback Skills Liane Nickerson, Director, Organizational Development and HR Policy, Export Development Canada Organizations often have lofty ambitions for their performance management programs. Performance management is meant to clarify job responsibilities and behaviours, align personal and team goals with organizational strategy, and improve productivity. Too often, however, performance management devolves into an annual exercise of box-ticking and general frustration for employees and management alike. In 2009, after recognizing that their performance management program was not driving desired behaviours, Export Development Canada (EDC) undertook some fundamental changes to its performance management program. Hear from Liane Nickerson as she discusses how EDC aligned its performance 5
6 May 21, 2014 management program with its cultural transformation, adding an emphasis on behavioural competencies. Learn about the innovative approach that EDC took to provide training to managers and employees on giving and accepting performance management feedback. 2:30 p.m. Refreshment Break 2:45 p.m. Plenary Session 6 Case Study Dominique Jones, Vice-President, Human Resources, Halogen Software Christine Thrussell, Director, Human Resources, Certified Management Accountants of Ontario Session details to be advised. 3:45 p.m. Plenary Session 7 Case Study: Performance and Talent Management Connecting High Performance to Career Development and Succession Planning Shelley L. Ralston, Director, Talent and Culture, Xerox Canada Ltd. Learning and career development are becoming increasingly important attraction and retention factors. Organizations that are able to identify high performers and high-potential employees and provide them with development opportunities are better situated to build their leadership pipeline from within. Hear from Shelley Ralston as she discusses how they identify, develop, and reward their high-potential employees to retain their best performers and ensure they have the right people in place to drive business performance in the future. 4:30 p.m. Closing Remarks from the Chair Ruth Wright, Director, Leadership and Human Resources Research, The Conference Board of Canada 4:45 p.m. Conference Adjourns 6
