1 Discipline Capstone Portfolio Presentation Assignment Putting It All Together This assignment addresses the following objectives: Course Learning Outcomes: Conducted an internal audit of the student s personality, skills, deficiencies, talents, achievements, and experience Constructed written and oral audience- centered statements that identify your strengths and potential contributions as a college graduate trained in Communication Studies Explored and identified a particular job or graduate school opportunity Created and presented a personal portfolio for use in career opportunities Department Learning Objectives: Capacity to construct and deliver an effective oral argument or performance of text, based on thorough audience analysis and clear rhetorical objectives Capacity to conduct original primary research, locate and critically evaluate secondary research, and integrate such information into new communication products. Capacity to analyze and critique messages in all forms and across objectives from an informed, critical perspective Due Date: November 5-17, 2014 Value of Assignment: 100 points Assignment Description: The Portfolio Presentation is designed to give you experience presenting yourself, your portfolio, and your experiences in a formal, evaluative setting. Each student will also be required to serve as an observer during a class period that they are not presenting in order to demonstrate skill in the constructive evaluation of others. The Portfolio Presentation serves as the stepping stone to the Mock Interview. The Portfolio Presentation consists of four (4) components: Brief Targeted Position Summary, Elevator Speech, Artifacts, Presentation Skills. 1. Brief Targeted Position Summary (10 points deducted from your overall score if missing) After you identify your post- graduate next step employment opportunity or graduate school program, conduct research on the organization and draft a summary of the requirements that includes at a minimum: Your name Name of the position (or graduate school program) you are applying for Name of organization (or graduate school) Location (City, State) Information that corresponds with the following 3 headings: o Background/History of Organization

2 o Position Requirements o Position Responsibilities You should also try to learn distinguishing characteristics, programs or services rendered, clientele or publics served, fields of study offered, etc. Your position summary should be typed, bulleted (with headings), and free of grammatical and spelling errors. You must bring 5 copies for your presentation. 2. Elevator Speech (20 points) The elevator speech is the basic introductory message when networking, your opening statement in telephone contacts with employers, and the foundation of your Tell me about yourself answer in interviewing (Krueger, p. 82). If you stepped on an elevator and had seconds to tell someone about yourself, this is the prepared speech you would give. Your goal here is to create a second commercial selling yourself to your audience. This extemporaneous speech should be fully prepared and practiced, yet should still sound conversational. You will NOT have a brief set of notes to refer to at any time during this presentation. You will be required to provide a typed manuscript copy of your prepared speech at the conclusion of your Portfolio Presentation. You will begin your presentation with your Elevator Speech after I give you the first prompt, Please tell us about yourself. 3. Portfolio Artifacts (50 points) After you present your Elevator Speech, you will use your artifacts to address why you are qualified for the position you are interviewing. I will give you the second prompt, Please elaborate about why we should hire you for this position, after you have completed your Elevator Speech. You are required to present a minimum of 3 artifacts from your portfolio. These should be excellent examples of skills that you have as related to the targeted position requirements. Your goal is to convince the audience that you have the required skills using the items from your portfolio. Again, this extemporaneous speech should be fully prepared and practiced, and you should sound conversational. You will NOT be permitted to use speaking notes, and serious deductions will be taken if you read directly from your orientation pages. 4. Presentation Skills (30 points) Your presentation skills throughout your entire Portfolio Presentation will also be evaluated in both the Elevator Speech and the Portfolio Artifacts portions. Your remarks should be organized clearly, enthusiastic, and professional in tone. You should also maintain strong eye contact with the panel members, speak coherently, and support your main ideas while addressing the requirements of the position.

3 The Portfolio Presentation will be evaluated according to the following criteria: Targeted Position Summary Language/Mechanics (- 5) Spelling, grammar, proper citations Depth of Content (- 5) Clarity and thoroughness of position description (specifics) Total Points (- 10) The position summary is a required basic component of this assignment. Since you have already submitted a previous version, it should be easy to re- submit with corrections. Five copies are required. Deductions for the summary will be taken from the starting grade of 100. Elevator Speech Language 5 Appropriate and professional language; no slang Depth of Thought and Self- Reflection 5 Content is articulate, to the point, and professional in tone; suggests that you have put careful thought into the construction of this speech Presentation Skills 10 Presentation should be a superior demonstration of your communication skills. Delivery should be extemporaneous. Content should be organized effectively. You should be enthusiastic. Total Points 20 Portfolio Items Depth of Thought and Self- Reflection 40 Explain the artifacts clearly and link them directly to the position. Address most of the position requirements through your presentation. Quality of Items Selected 10 Items chosen should be excellent examples of your skills and relevant to the position. Presentation Skills 30 Presentation should be a superior demonstration of your communication skills. Delivery should be extemporaneous. Content should be organized effectively. You should be enthusiastic. Total Points 80

4 Procedure for Portfolio Presentation - - FOR PRESENTERS 1. Arrive to classroom early in business professional attire with the following items: - - Portfolio copies of Targeted Position Summary - - Typed Manuscript of Elevator Speech If you are not in business professional attire, you will not be permitted to present, and therefore, will earn a zero on the assignment. 2. Check in with the instructor, and submit all 5 copies of your Targeted Position Summary. 3. Wait quietly in the hall until one of the observers comes to get you. 4. Once you are seated in the classroom, I will prompt you for your elevator speech by saying, Please tell us about yourself. Your maximum time limit of 8 minutes begins when I prompt you. 5. Once you are finished with your elevator speech, I will prompt you for your artifacts by saying, Why should we hire you for this position? Your time ends when you stop speaking. 6. While the observers complete their written evaluations of you, I will collect your portfolio and elevator manuscript from you. After a few minutes, the observers will give you oral feedback. 7. After the oral feedback session, you will be thanked and permitted to leave. - - FOR OBSERVERS 1. Arrive to our classroom early in business professional attire with the following items: copies of the peer evaluation forms - - writing utensil We begin promptly at 2:00 sharp. If you are late or not dressed in business professional attire, you will not be permitted to observe. You will receive a zero for participation and be counted as absent. 2. Check in with the instructor, who will direct you to a seat. Take out your peer evaluation forms and a writing utensil. Nothing else should be out on the table, due to the cramped conditions. 3. Collect one copy of each of the Targeted Position Summaries and skim them to prepare for the presentations. 4. During the presentations, make eye contact with the presenter write your comments at the end of the presentation. At the conclusion of the presentation, I will ask the observers to make comments on the peer evaluation forms. Rather than focus on circling the many items on the form, I would prefer that you write comments at the bottom. You will only have a few minutes to do this, so you must be concise and to the point.

5 5. You will be asked to give one positive and one negative comment orally to the presenter while they are still in the room. You will be evaluated on the quality of your comments, so please take this seriously. Your comments should be respectful and constructive in order to assist your classmates in personal and professional growth. Your comments also should be honest. 6. Feedback forms will be collected at the end of all presentations. These will be given to the presenter with his/her final grade. Requirements for Presenters: Business Professional Attire you will not be permitted to present in anything less than an interview suit Arrive on Time Completed Portfolio 5 copies of typed Targeted Position Summary Typed Elevator Speech Manuscript Maximum of 8 minutes for entire presentation Requirements for Observers: Business Professional Attire you will not be permitted to observe in anything less than an interview suit Arrive on Time 4 Peer Evaluation Forms Writing Utensil Provide constructive and honest positive and negative oral and written feedback
