Extract from Budget speech We must harness our potential in Science and Technology to realize the dream of Modern India envisioned by the Prime Minister in the Indian Science Congress last month I am making a provision of 50 Cr in the budget of the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research for launching a New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative. It will focus on areas which fulfill national objectives and will be based on partnership between the Government and private sector. Finance Minister, 29th February, 2000
POSITIONING NMITLI : PROJECTS Low Technology Certainty India so far operated here NMITLI High Market Certainty Low

We should encourage public-private partnership in the widest range of scientific programmes and projects. We should adopt intelligent and result oriented initiatives, such as CSIR s New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative, in which about 50 private sector companies and 150 institutions have already participated. PMs speech 91 st Science Congress, 2004 in Chandigarh
On the occasion of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes: September 13, Dr. Manmohan Singh Last week, I was informed of a breakthrough discovery, of a new molecule to treat Tuberculosis. I am told this is the first new molecule to appear since This achievement is entirely due to a unique public-private partnership between manufacturing firms and public institutions, through CSIR s New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiatives. Since tuberculosis takes a toll of 5 lakh lives each year in India, this discovery could be of immense significance. We need more partnerships that create leadership for industry while helping the nation combat problems of the common man, such as disease.
India s basic knowledge is stupendous. The challenge is to make it more commercial and market-driven, using more programmes such as the New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI) launched in Mark Dutz Senior Economist World Bank
