1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB TITLE: Apprentice Laboratory Technician (Geography) 2. DEPARTMENT: Geography & Development Studies 3. JOB PURPOSE: To provide apprenticeship training as a Technician working in the Department s Soils Laboratory, Map Room and Geomatics (Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems) Laboratory. The apprenticeship will appeal to anyone interested in progressing to a laboratory technician/support role working in an educational or industrial context. 4. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department of Geography & Development Studies is one of the fastest growing academic departments in the University, teaching degrees in Geography, International Development and Natural Hazard Management. There are currently 14 members of academic staff and four support staff responsible for teaching over 350 undergraduate students. The Department has a national reputation for teaching excellence, with a significant emphasis on field and practical work at all three levels of the undergraduate degree. Most of the Department s fieldwork is UK based, but there are also field courses to southern Spain, Norway, New York, Geneva and the Bay of Naples. 5. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: The appointee will work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Technician, Dr. Jane Bevan. Key tasks will include: - providing support to student laboratory and field classes; - assisting with health and risk assessment in field and laboratory work; - helping to maintain functionality of the Department s IT facilities; - cataloguing and archiving (e.g. of map collections and geological specimens); - inventorying and maintaining field and laboratory equipment; - creating digital resources; - providing support to staff research projects; - providing support to the administration team. The work will be varied, with training spanning a wide range of geographical field and laboratory techniques; e.g. use of information systems (GIS) on Page 1 of 5

2 computers, use of ipads and podcasting in fieldwork, laboratory bench work (e.g. soil/sediment/pollen analysis), field surveying, data analysis. 3 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title & Department: Apprentice Laboratory Technician (Advanced Apprenticeship NVQ 3) Criteria Qualifications: 5 GCSEs grade A-C or equivalent, to include English and Maths Geography to at least grade C GCSE NVQ Level 2 or equivalent Proven Experience: Previous work experience working with a variety of people Experience of problem solving/data analysis using computers Knowledge, skills and abilities: Good written communication skills The ability to work effectively with others as a competent team member. 4 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER ADDITIONAL DETAILS FOR ENGAGING AN APPRENTICE PLACEMENT The University of Chester will act as a placement for an apprentice for up to 12 months organised through the North West Apprentice Training Company. The Apprentice Training Company will hold the terms and conditions of employment for the Apprentice and as such will be responsible for salary and other statutory payments. The apprentice will be employed by the Training Company but placed with the University in a specific location. The Apprentice will have a mentor at the University to coach them through the day to day elements of their role and liaise with the representative of the ATC to ensure training needs are met. TRAINING The apprentice will work towards the achievement of an NVQ at Intermediate or Advanced level, key skills, and in some cases, a technical certificate. This is expected to take on average ½ - 1 day per week but may include on the job training. The Apprentice will be assessed on a regular basis by a representative from the Apprentice Training Company. Apprentices will be monitored during their placement to ensure that they are making satisfactory progress towards the achievement of their qualifications. SALARY In accordance with National Minimum Wage rates, currently: Age Between Between over 21 NMW 3.72 per hour 5.03 per hour 6.31 per hour HOURS OF WORK 36.5 hours per week inclusive of study/development/training time to be worked as follows: Monday to Thursday Friday 9:00am 5.30pm 9:00am 4:30pm (less one hour lunch break each day) A flexible approach to work will be required as there will be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. This will include evening and weekend working. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days plus Bank Holidays, and two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. Page 4 of 5

5 PENSION SCHEME Apprentices are not entitled to join the University scheme, as their employer is the Apprentice Training Agency. STANDARD OF DRESS During the placement, the Apprentice is expected to have a reasonable standard of dress, and may be required to wear a uniform depending upon the placement. ABSENCE & LATENESS As placement provider, the University will monitor attendance and timekeeping. Apprentices will be expected to contact their line manager at the University within 1 hour of any absence. FUTURE EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS The Apprenticeship is likely to last for 12 months. There is no guarantee of employment beyond this period, however towards the end of the Apprenticeship, Apprentices may apply for jobs advertised by the University, including those advertised internally, subject to successful progress during their Apprenticeship.
