2 Student teaching is an apprenticeship! In the middle ages, an apprentice worked with the master for a period of years! At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice became a craftsman. Fourteen weeks does not a craftsman make! It is vital to provide the best mentoring you can for your student teacher.

3 What are your rewards? Reflect upon and renew your practice Reduce the isolation of the classroom Repay those who mentored you Learn new ideas and techniques from your student teacher Have an impact on future generations of teachers

4 Why should you supervise a student teacher? 14% of teachers leave in their first year 24% of teachers leave in their second year 33% of teachers leave in their third year 40% of teachers leave in their fourth year 46% of teachers leave in their fifth year STUDENT TEACHERS DON T YET SEE THE BIG PICTURE: HOW SUBJECTS ARE INTERRELATED HOW TO MANAGE A CLASSROOM HOW TO PLAN STRATEGICALLY.

5 The ideal cooperating teacher.. Does this sound like you? You have strong communication skills You are well liked by your staff You encourage reflection and informed decision-making You instill confidence You are a good listener who emphasizes the positive

6 You are willing to give your personal time You have a good command of best practices You know how to help your student teacher reflect on her own practice You can provide frequent feedback You are willing to let your student teacher take reasonable risks You see mentoring a student teacher as contributing to your personal growth!

7 Making your student teacher feel welcome Add your student teacher s name to the door to give colleague status Exchange background and contact information, and decide how communication will be done out of school Give a tour of the building Share your dress code, parking and lunch procedures Share emergency procedures, duties, attendance procedures, opening exercises

8 Provide a desk stocked with supplies, class lists, schedules, seating charts, and a list of building personnel Provide all instructional materials: curriculum guides, student materials, etc. Share on-line grading systems Share your educational philosophy Encourage your student teacher to keep an observation notebook which can be debriefed at scheduled intervals.

9 Mentoring practices for the first few weeks Provide lots of opportunities for observation Think aloud when planning and processing the observed lessons Have the student teacher begin by working with small groups Schedule at least one session per week to plan and process classroom lessons and issues

10 Mentoring practices for the first few weeks Provide background information on students Share IEP s Share classroom management system Include your student teacher in school and district meetings and parent conferences

11 Gradually releasing responsibility Set short-range and long term goals: update continuously Share planning for two weeks Student teacher takes the lead for planning for the rest of the semester

12 Because teaching is no longer a solitary pursuit, consider co-teaching when your student teacher is in charge: One person teaches, the other observes One person teaches, the other helps by rotating around the class Each teacher is in charge of a station or learning center Parallel teaching: both teach same lesson to half the group Supplemental teaching: one teaches the grade level group, the other a different ability group Alternate teaching strategies same lesson in two different modalities
