1 Lecture 4 : Series So far our definition of a sum of numbers applies only to adding a finite set of numbers. We can extend this to a definition of a sum of an infinite set of numbers in much the same way as we extended our notion of the definite integral to an improper integral over an infinite interval. Example We call this infinite sum a series n = Definition Given a series a n = a + a + a , we let s n denote its n th partial sum s n = a + a + + a n. If the sequence {s n } is convergent and lim s n = S, then we say that the series a n is convergent and we let a n = lim n i= a n = lim s n = S. The number S is called the sum of the series. Otherwise the series is called divergent. Example Find the partial sums s, s, s 3,..., s n of the series Find the sum of this series. Does the series converge?. n Example Recall that n = n(n+). Does the series converge? n

2 Geometric Series The geometric series ar n = a + ar + ar + is convergent if r < and its sum is ar n = a r r <. If r, the geometric series is divergent. Proof If r =, and the series diverges. If r =, ar n = a + a + a + a +, s n = an, lim s n = ar n = a a+a a+, s n = a if n is odd and s n = 0 if n is even, lim s n = does not exist and the series diverges. Telescoping Series These are series of the form similar to f(n) f(n + ). Because of the large amount of cancellation, they are relatively easy to sum. Example Show that the series converges. k= k + 7k + = (k + 3) (k + 4) k= 3

4 Harmonic Series The following series, known as the harmonic series, diverges: We can see this if we look at a subsequence of partial sums: {s n}. k= n s = Similarly we get s = + = 3 s 4 = + [ ] > + [ ] = 4 s 8 = + [ ] [ [ > s 4 + 8] ] + > + = 5 s n > n + and lim s n > lim n+ =. Hence the harmonic series diverges. (You will see an easier proof in the next section. ) Note that convergence or divergence is unaffected by adding or deleting a finite number of terms at the beginning of the series. Example and 0 k=50 n is divergent k is convergent. Divergence Test Theorem If a series i= a n is convergent, then lim a n = 0. Warning The converse is not true, we may have a series where lim a n = 0 and the series in divergent. For example, the harmonic series. Proof Suppose the series i= a n is convergent with sum S. Since a n = s n s n and lim s n = lim s n = S we have lim a n = lim s n lim s n = S S = 0. This gives us a Test for Divergence: If lim a n does not exist or if lim a n 0, then i= a n is divergent. If lim a n = 0 the test is inconclusive. 4

5 Example Test the following series for divergence with the above test: n + n n + n 3 n + n Note that if lim a n = 0, this test is inconclusive and the series may diverge or converge. Properties of Series The following properties of series follow from the corresponding laws of limits: Suppose a n and b n are convergent series, then the series (a n + b n ), (an b n ) and ca n also converge.
