date: Jesus Is the Good News The Great Commission Matthew 28:16 20 Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He met with His apostles on a mountain in Galilee. The Lord commissioned the apostles to spread the good news to all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.. Explore Discover Respond Bless Connect Option 2: Instead of having children draw lines on the map, another option would be to provide yarn and tape. Children can stretch out a line of yarn from one place to another and you can help them tape the yarn in place. Teaching Tip from ROCKHARBOR Church Since the pictures are full page, we printed them on card stock. Then we cut the lesson text that corresponds with each picture, glued it to the back, and read the story that way. Option 1: As children create the poster, encourage them to think of a person in their own lives who might need to know Jesus. Discuss ways they might be able to share the good news of Jesus with that person sometime this week. HomeFront Magazine: A Spiritual Parenting Resource is a magazine that gives families ideas for creating fun, spiritually forming times in their homes setting aside a sacred space for family in the midst of their active, everyday lives! As the new issue becomes available each month, you may choose to print it for families or encourage them to visit to subscribe to have the magazine sent directly to their inbox. HomeFront is also available as an app for your iphone, ipad, or Android device. 2
Explore:: min. For additional EXPLORE ideas see the TruBlessings Putting It Together document in the Supporting Lesson Resources. Option 1: All the People of the World Goofy Smile Silly Face Stamps (available at paper (several sheets) Invite two children at a time to the EXPLORE station. There are many people in our world. Jesus loves each and every person. Can we share Jesus love with everyone? Allow answers. We sure can. There are different face stamps on the table. Today we get to make a picture of all the different people in the world. Show children how to use the stamps. Dab one stamp in the ink and then stamp it on the paper. Invite children to join in to create a poster representing all the different people in the world. Set out a new sheet of paper before the next pair of children join you at the EXPLORE station. ME AT THREE... Three-year-old children love to copy their parents and teachers. Activities in which they repeat your words or mimic your actions are fun for them and give them a chance to practice important skills. Try using a simple mimic game when it s time to transition from one activity to another. For example, point to your ear while saying ear and have the kids repeat after you. Do the same thing with other body parts until all of the children are following suit. Use the same game from week to week so it becomes a familiar trigger for your children. Option 2: Where in the World? Write & Wipe World Tabletop Map (available at or Map of the World template (see Resource Files) laminator star-shaped sticker (small) heart-shaped stickers (small, several) washable marker wet wipe or paper towel PREPARE AHEAD Print and laminate a copy of the Map of the World template or remove the Write & Wipe World from its package. Place a small star sticker on the map to mark your location. Use the small heart stickers to mark different countries or continents around the world. Welcome one child at a time to the EXPLORE station. What do you see on the table? Allow child to respond. It s a picture of the world. This picture is called a map. It shows us the many different places people live. There s a star on the map that shows us where we live. Can you find the star? Interact with child as he locates the star. What else do you see on the map? Interact with response. Yes, there are hearts all over our map. Each heart shows us a different part of the world. There are many people who live by each of these hearts. God tells us to share His love with everyone. Can we share God s love with the people who live (point to various hearts and name their location)? Can you draw a line from the star where we live to one of the hearts on our world? Assist child if he needs help. Great job. Do the people who live in (insert name of country) need to hear about God s love? Children move into a time where they can participate in discovering God s Word through storytelling, worship, and interactive experiences. Transition Song: The Cleanup Song 3

Welcome Bible TruBlessings Theme Song (see Supporting Lesson Resources) Hamilton puppet Hamilton s house inflatable world globe (available at Ponder Point: Jesus Is the Good News Hi, friends! Welcome! I m so excited to be here with you today. Let s all celebrate God by singing and dancing together! Play the TruBlessings Theme Song and lead kids in dance and celebration. Wow! That was great! Now, everyone take a seat it s time to hear a part of The Big God Story. Friends, it s time to call our friend Hamilton and ask him to join us for The Big God Story! On the count of three, let s call him together. Are you ready? One, two, three. Hamilton, where are you? Encourage kids to call for Hamilton. Hmmm I wonder what he s doing. Maybe he s playing outside with some of his hedgehog friends. Let s try again. One, two, three. Hamilton, where are you? Hamilton comes out rolling a globe. Hi, Hamilton! I m so glad you ve joined us today. What does Hamilton have with him? Allow children to respond. That s right! It s a globe of the world. What do you think the globe might be for? Allow children to respond. I bet you re right. It probably has something to do with The Big God Story. Hamilton, are you ready to hear about Jesus and The Big God Story? Hamilton nods excitedly. Friends, are you ready to hear about Jesus and The Big God Story? Children will answer. Me too! Where can we find The Big God Story? Hamilton nods his head toward the Bible. That s right. We can find The Big God Story in the Bible! God gave us the Bible so we can learn about Him. It s full of things that help us know God. I know how much you love to dig, dig, dig right into God s Word. Hamilton nods his head. Let s all stand up and sing our Bible Song together. Bible Song (sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb ) Now it s time to hear God s Word Hear God s Word Hear God s Word Now it s time to hear God s Word So let s look in the Bible As the song ends, have children return to their Story Spots. Hamilton can model this for the children by sitting quietly as he listens to The Big God Story. 4
The Great Commission Matthew 28:16 20 The Big God Story The Big God Story is written for a three-year-old audience. It can be told in its entirety or shortened if the class is on the younger side. storyboard (whiteboard or felt board) The Big God Story images #1 5 (see Resource Files) Hamilton puppet inflatable world globe (available at Velcro squares or magnets basket optional: easel EXPLORE DISCOVER RESPOND BLESS CONNECT PREPARE AHEAD Print The Big God Story images. Attach the magnets to the pictures if you re using a magnetic whiteboard as your storyboard. Attach felt or Velcro squares to the back of the pictures if you re using a felt storyboard. SET UP Place the storyboard on the easel (optional) in the storytelling area. Place The Big God Story images in the basket and set it on the floor next to the storyboard. Before we go any further, let s all pray together and ask God to teach us more about Him. Lead the children in a Prayer of Release as you prepare to hear God s Word. Friends, I have some pictures to help tell us this part of The Big God Story. Place image #1 on the storyboard. What do you see in this picture? Interact with children and their observations. That s right. There s a boat and water. Hamilton pretends to fish. What do you think Hamilton is doing right now? Allow children to respond. He s fishing! What else do you see in the picture? Allow children to respond. People. Good job! We ve heard this part of The Big God Story before. This is the part of the story when Jesus told His friends, the apostles, to throw their nets into the water to catch fish. The men listened to Jesus words and threw their nets in the water. When they pulled their nets out of the water, what do you think was inside? Allow responses. Lots and lots of fish! Place image #2 on the storyboard. Let s take a look at our next picture. What do you see? Interact with kids and their responses. It s a picture of Jesus and Peter. What is Peter doing? Children will answer. That s right. He s walking on the water. Jesus told him to get out of the boat and walk to Him. Did Peter listen to Jesus? Wait for responses. Yes, he did. Was Jesus with Peter? Allow responses. Yes, Jesus was with Peter the entire time! Place image #3 on the storyboard. Oh, I remember this part of The Big God Story. The people who gathered together to be near Jesus were hungry. Hamilton rubs his tummy as if he s hungry. It looks like someone else might be hungry too! They only had two fish and five loaves of bread. That wasn t enough food to feed all of the people. So Jesus performed a miracle. He turned the two fish and five loaves of bread into enough food for everyone who was hungry. Place image #4 on the storyboard. What do you see in this picture? Interact with kids and their responses. It s a picture of the tomb where Jesus lay after He died on the cross. Hamilton lies down. How many days did he lie inside the tomb? Wait for responses. 5
Three days. Can you show me three fingers? Model holding up three fingers while the children imitate you. Good job. After three days, Jesus rose from the grave. He s alive, just as He said He would be. Place image #5 on the storyboard. Who s in this picture? What are the people doing in this picture? Interact with kids and their responses. This picture shows us a part of The Big God Story when Jesus told His friends to meet Him at the mountain after He came back to life. It was on a mountain in the city of Galilee. When we look at all of these pictures, they remind us of all the things Jesus taught His friends, the apostles. He was getting them ready for a very important job. Jesus wanted His apostles to go and tell everyone all of the things He had told them. Jesus wanted everyone to know how He d died for their sins so they could know God. What happened after Jesus died? Allow kids to respond. That s right He came back to life so everyone could know God and be with Him forever and ever. That s good news! Jesus wanted His friends to go into the world, all over the place, and tell other people the good news. Hamilton rolls his globe for children to see. That s why Hamilton has a globe. Because God wanted His apostles to share the good news of Jesus all over the world! And that s just what they did. They went all over the world and told people about God s love. They told people how Jesus died for their sins and how He came back from the dead. Because Jesus is the Good News, all people can know God and be with Him forever. Have children say good-bye to Hamilton as he goes back into his house. 6
Respond:: 5 min. Song of Celebration We just heard a very exciting part of The Big God Story. Jesus friends were given a very important job. Jesus told them to teach people about the good news. Jesus is alive, and we want everyone to know Him. Let s stand up and celebrate together! Ready, set, go! Lead kids in a celebratory worship song. Suggested song: Ready, Set, Go! from TruWorship Songs from the Playhouse. Bless:: 5 min. Gather the children around you to bless them. Pray this prayer of blessing over them: Children, may you know that Jesus is the Good News! Open a Bible and read Isaiah 6:3b: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory. Snack: If you d like to tie in the snack with the lesson, consider peeling and sectioning an orange with the kids. Break wedges into bitesize pieces. Discuss how the shape of the orange is the same shape as our world. As the kids eat, sit down with them and engage them in conversation. Be sure to consider any food allergies or check with parents ahead of time. 7
Connect:: min. Option 1: Go Tell the World World template (see Resource Files) card stock (white, 1 sheet) table covering watercolors paintbrushes (1 per child) water cups (small) PREPARE Print the World template onto the card stock. SET UP Cover the table with the table covering. Fill the cups with a small amount of water and place the watercolors near the children. Jesus told His friends to tell the entire world the good news of Jesus and His love. We have a picture of the world here in front of us. This picture can remind us of all of the people in the world who need to hear about Jesus. You get to paint the world to show all the beautiful colors that God created. Pass out a paintbrush to each child and make sure everyone has a World template. Show the children how to dip the paintbrush in the water and then into the paint. Then make a stroke on your World template. Encourage children to do the same. You may need to remind children to always dip the paintbrush in the water first. Provide assistance as needed. Option 2: Bubbles to the World bubbles Gather the children together in one area. I love blowing bubbles, don t you? When we blow bubbles, they fly all over the place. We can pretend they re floating all around the world just like we can take the good news of Jesus around the world! I m going to blow bubbles, and we can watch them float around. Start blowing bubbles and encourage children to pop them. After a while, give one child at a time a chance to blow some bubbles. 8
Option 3: World Bounce inflatable world globe (available at parachute SET UP Lay the parachute on the ground and place the globe in the middle. Boys and girls, what s sitting on our parachute? Children respond. That s right it looks like a ball. It s a pretend world. It has pictures of all the different places where people live. Do all of the people who live in our world need to know Jesus love? Children respond. They sure do. Can you and I tell others about Jesus? Invite responses. You re right. We can. Let s play a game with our pretend world. Together we ll shake the parachute to bounce, bounce, bounce the world up and down. Have children gather around the parachute. Demonstrate how to move the parachute up and down. Start off gently and encourage children to go up and down at the same time. Then go a little faster so the globe starts to bounce. Ongoing CONNECT Option Hamilton s Box of Fun coloring sheet (see Resource Files) box or basket Toddler Movement Scarves (available at puppets interlocking blocks toy animals magnifying glasses (available at The Cleanup Song (see Supporting Lesson Resources) SET UP Put a variety of fun objects/toys in the box or basket. Hide it somewhere in the room. Clean the objects each week after use. Invite the kids to your circle time area and sing together: Hamilton s Box (sung to the tune of Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone? ) Oh where, oh where is Hamilton s Box? Oh where, oh where can it be? It s full of fun toys that we sure like a lot Oh where, oh where can it be? Pick one or two kids to help find the box or basket. Once it s found, you can place it in the middle of your circle time area and invite the kids to come and explore what s inside. Come on over, everyone! What fun things can we explore today? Let s take turns playing with things and even play together. When it s time to put the toys away, cue the kids with The Cleanup Song. 9
