The philosophy of the new University, as communicated by its first President, is to be one of the top universities in the world, supporting not only the best research but being recognised internationally for all its four Faculties which include the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences within which this post will be located. We thus expect to appoint only staff who will help us achieve that aspiration.

4 The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences Manchester has been known for more than 250 years for its innovative teaching and extensive research and is one of the largest faculties of clinical and health sciences in Europe. One of four Faculties within the University, the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences comprises Schools of Medicine; Dentistry; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Psychological Sciences; and Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work and Four Medical Research Schools. The Faculty boasts an annual research income of over 37 million, which is almost a third that of the total research grant income for the University. Its student population comprises over 3,500 candidates registered for undergraduate degree and diploma programmes and 1,000 postgraduates on award-bearing courses. The Faculty has strong interdisciplinary links with other Schools and Faculties of the University and NHS organisations in Greater Manchester. The School of Dentistry The Dental School is staffed by 35 full-time HEFCE funded staff. The Head of School is Professor Paul Coulthard. The School has a modern and functional management structure, with the following people being responsible for the School s future development as a topclass institution. Director of Research Director of Undergraduate Education Director of Graduate Education Director of Evidence for Practice Director of Business Engagement Previous Head of School Head of School Administration Clinical Head of Division Professor Anne-Marie Glenny Professor Kevin Seymour Professor Julian Satterthwaite Professor Helen Worthington Professor Iain Pretty Professor Iain Mackie Mrs. Gabrielle Brennan Dr Michael Pemberton The School has no departments, allowing a unified and team-oriented approach to the running of the School. The School was awarded the maximum mark of 24 in the latest Subject Review. The University of Manchester's School of Dentistry has been ranked the premier Dental School in the country for high-quality research. Results from the 2008 RAE placed the School first in the UK in terms of the quality of its academic research. Thirty per cent of the School's researchers were deemed to carry out research that was internationally leading, attracting the top 4* grade, while a further 45% of those assessed by the RAE carried out research that was world class (3*). The remaining 25% published research of international significance (2*). Research The School has two highly successful and innovative research themes; Basic Dental Science and Health Science Research, and the School s internationally renowned research work is funded from Research Councils, the NHS, the EU, charity and industry.

5 Research Themes The Basic Dental Science research theme is led by Dr Nicoletta Bobola and two main areas are covered. the genetics of craniofacial anomalies, oral cancer and periodontal disease adhesive biomaterials and biomechanics The Health Science Research theme is co-led by Drs Tanya Walsh and Paul Brocklehurst. The health sciences research theme makes a significant contribution to international dental policy and practice as a result of its world leading research programmes. The School also hosts the Cochrane Oral Health Review Group (COHG) led by Professor Helen Worthington. The COHG is one of the most active and productive of all of the Cochrane groups and the systematic reviews have shaped policy and produced guidelines which have altered clinical practice. The School has a strong clinical craniofacial research group led by Professor Bill Shaw CBE and is part of a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for research into the treatment of craniofacial anomalies The School recently celebrated a 40 year-old research collaboration with Colgate-Palmolive. Over the past 40 years the Dental Health Unit based on the Manchester Science Park has published more than 120 papers and five professors, six senior lecturers and two Chief Dental Officers started their work in the Unit. The Unit now led by Prof Roger Ellwood and Professor Iain Pretty produced world leading research on the diagnosis and measurement of dental disease. Research in the field of oral radiology and imaging is led by Professors Keith Horner and Hugh Devlin who have completed recent European Commission funded research on detection of osteoporosis. Teaching The Dental School attracts the highest calibre students to its outward-looking and modern BDS programme. The focus is upon enquiry-based learning and clinical teaching within the community. Students are encouraged to use an evidence-based approach to decision making. Importantly, the programme is linked to the UK s first degree programme for Professions Complementary to Dentistry(BSc Oral Health Science). An exciting and innovative review of the curriculum took place in In October 2006 we introduced a new curriculum founded on integration, enquiry based learning, small group teaching, team working and early patient contact. Outreach teaching at a number of NHS Primary Care Centres throughout Greater Manchester is also a major focus in clinical years. The Dental School also provides teaching and learning for postgraduate programmes (MSc, PG Dip and PG Cert). There are also a number of research students (MPhil and PhD) whose programmes include taught elements. The MSc Dental Specialties programmes have been established for many years at the School of Dentistry and have undergone programme specification amendment on several occasions as they have sought to develop within a changing world and student market. The programmes have been available full-time over one year and more recently, part-time over two years. Our part time MSc offering now attracts UK dentists who work in clinical dentistry half-time to support their study. We are pleased with this change which is in line with the

6 Department of Health and Faculty of Dental Practice (UK) published Guidelines for the appointment of Dentists with a Special Interest. An exciting and innovative development has been the introduction of new clinical MSc programmes over a three-year period to allow sufficient time for additional clinical training experience around the MSc producing a full-time training programme. This model has been in place for many years for our clinical MSc in Orthodontics. We now offer this same programme design for our MSc programmes in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Endodontics, and Periodontology. A further new development has been the introduction of a four-year PhD programme that offers clinical experience alongside research training. These programmes are proving popular with the international market. However new initiatives are continuing further, as the School has embarked on an on-line MSc in Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry in association with an industrial partner, Smile-On. The School also has 2 National Teaching Fellows, Professor Iain Mackie and Professor Nick Grey.
