7 Tourist jetty fee at Semporna It has been decided with the local Semporna Tourism and Semporna District Office, that the Tourist Jetty and Information Centre, Semporna has started operating since December Please be informed that the ticket rates for all tourists/passengers will be as follows: i) Malaysian (Local) MYR 2.00 per person / per trip (Malaysian ID holder). ii) Non Malaysian (Foreigners) MYR per person / per trip (Foreign passport holder). 7

8 Plans to convert old palace into MICE venue The old Istana Negara building may be converted into a Meeting, Incentives, Convention and Exhibition (MICE) venue to take advantage of its high historical and tourism value, said Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. The Tourism Minister said the Cabinet agreed in principle to her proposal during a discussion on future plans for the historic site yesterday. The Government has agreed to include an official from the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition bureau (MyCEB) on a committee recently set up to study the future use of the former palace. Dr Ng said the plan was intended to maximise the old Istana Negara s potential as a tourist draw, which might include the setting up of galleries and a museum on all the country s past Kings. She said the Government was also mulling over the possibility of reinstating the changing of the guard ceremony at the old Istana despite the King having moved to the new Istana at Jalan Duta. This is because the old palace is a key attraction that has drawn an average of over one million tourists annually. Source: The Star online 8

9 ERL extension from KLIA to KLIA2 ready by October The ERL train extension from KLIA to KLIA2 will be ready by October this year, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha. "The train journey between KLIA and KLIA2 will take about three minutes. The extension will likely see the volume of ERL passengers doubling," he added. The ERL services, which include the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, carry about four to five million passengers every year. Kong said the project to extend the line to the new low-cost carrier terminal totalled up to RM100mil. "The project is currently running smoothly and about 25% complete. It is scheduled be ready by Oct 31 this year while the KLIA2's construction is expected to be completed in April 2013," he told reporters after visiting the construction site of the proposed rail extension here Thursday. He added that the extension was necessary in line with the development of the new terminal as it will enable passengers from KL Sentral to reach the KLIA and KLIA2. "I hope that when KLIA2 is in full swing, we will be able to make ERL services available 24 hours a day to cater to flight arrivals in the wee hours of the morning," he said. Currently, ERL services run for 21 hours a day, taking a break between 1am and 4am. Source: The Star online 9
