1 CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS AND UPLOAD PROCEDURES ASSIGNMENT REGULATIONS Coursework must be submitted electronically to The Institute of Banking on or before the submission deadline date. Assignments received after the submission date will be subject to penalty (see below). Under no circumstances will hard copy assignments be accepted. An assignment upload facility is available to students in My Institute. All assignments uploaded must: Be in pdf format Have a completed assignment cover sheet attached (available on My Institute ) Students will need to download two software applications in order to submit their assignments in the correct format. One is an open source application pdf creator which can be downloaded (free) here This will create a pdf document of your assignment. You will also need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to be able to view/review your document (this is important as sometimes Microsoft Word documents can reflow (move) when converted to pdf). Adobe Reader can be downloaded (free) here Students should create their work in Word, attach a completed cover sheet and then create a pdf of the whole document. Once you upload your assignment, it cannot be retrieved for further editing: what you upload will be your final document. There will be no exceptions to this. Therefore, prior to uploading you should carefully review your final pdf document to ensure that you are happy with its content and presentation. Please note that you can only upload one document in pdf format through My Institute. If you submit a second document it will override the first one. Plagiarism and referencing You should pay particular attention to referencing. Candidates at The Institute of Banking are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. The work you submit to the Institute for assessment must be your own work. You will complete a wide variety of assignments during your time studying with the Institute. In this respect it is vital that you Continuous assessment regulations & Page 1 of 16

2 understand what plagiarism is, the guidelines that students must follow to avoid it and, the penalties for instances of plagiarism. UCD s plagiarism policy can be found at Guidance for students can be found at You should read both these documents carefully to ensure that you do not fall foul of the regulations in this area. In order to avoid contravening the plagiarism regulations, the Institute recommends that students use an electronic plagiarism checker to check their work prior to submission to ensure that you have correctly cited all sources used in creating your assignment. The Institute will itself run a check on submitted assignments through a plagiarism checker to scan for possible breaches of the plagiarism policy. (Please note, in many cases you will need to register to use these services. Furthermore, the Institute does not take any responsibility for the content, accuracy of the information and/or the quality of products or services provided by or advertised by these third-party websites. The Institute disclaims, to the fullest extent permissible by applicable law, any and all liability and responsibility for any claims or damage that may arise as a result of any websites maintained by third-party websites. 3 CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT: SUBMISSION PROCEDURES When you are submitting assignments electronically you must: Attach a completed cover and feedback sheet to the front of your assignment document (see below) (i.e. the cover sheet will be the first page of your assignment) Create a pdf version of your assignment document. Check your assignment for instances of plagiarism. Make any amendments necessary to your assignment and review. Create a pdf version of your assignment document. 6 On receipt of an assignment The Institute of Banking will automatically issue a confirmation of receipt by sms and . Creating a PDF file In order to create and view pdf documents you will need two programmes. A pdf writer (which creates the pdf document) and a pdf reader (which allows you to view the document) PDF reader 1. To download the pdf viewer you should go to scroll down to the end of the page and select Adobe Reader Continuous assessment regulations & Page 6 of 16

7 2. Once selected it will bring you to the below page where you can click on download and follow the instructions. This software is free to download and use. Downloading the PDFCreator 3. To download the pdf creator you should go to click on Download and follow the instructions (either run the programme directly or save it to your pc and then run the setup for it). 8 Using the PDF Writer 4. Once the PDFCreator is set up on your system, when you want to use it, open the Word file of which you want to create a pdf version. Then in the File menu, click on Print 5. When the Print Screen opens, click on the drop down menu in Printer: Name and select PDFCreator and then click OK. This will create your pdf document which will open in the Adobe Reader. You should then save this file. This is the file that you should submit as the final version of your assignment. Continuous assessment regulations & Page 8 of 16

Embedding Excel data in your assignment Where your assignment involves the submission of an Excel component the following are steps on how to insert the cell data and also insert the calculations in the worksheet into a Word document. 1. Open both the Word document and the Excel spreadsheet 2. In Excel, copy the range of cells you want to include 3. In your Word document position the cursor where you would like the table inserted 4. On the Edit menu, select Paste Special Continuous assessment regulations & Page 9 of 16

10 5. Click the radio button beside Paste 6. Under the label As : select Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object 7. Click OK To show the Calculations in a worksheet, do the following: 1. Click on the Tools menu and select Options: Continuous assessment regulations & Page 10 of 16

11 2. Select the formulas check box as highlighted. 3. This will show the formulas in the worksheet. You can then use the method above for copying excel data and copy the calculations into the word document. Note: If you have to show your calculations as part of your assessment you should copy the values in the worksheet which contains your data and paste it into a separate sheet. Call this sheet Formulae and call your original sheet Values. You should then highlight all active cells in the Formulae worksheet and follow the procedures 1 and 2 above for displaying the formula. You will then have a workbook with two sheets one displaying the calculated values (Values) and one displaying the formula used (Formulae). In general the calculated values should be pasted into the body of your assignment, with the formula added as an appendix to the project. Continuous assessment regulations & Page 11 of 16

12 UPLOADING YOUR CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION 1. To upload your CA submission, ensure that you have firstly created it as a single PDF document (this is the only format that your CA can be accepted in). Next, visit and enter your membership number and password in the top left of the screen as below: Membership and password 2. When you have been signed in successfully to My Institute, select the Module. Continuous assessment regulations & Page 12 of 16

13 3. You will see a screen similar to the below. On this screen please select the CA Submission link as indicated: Continuous assessment regulations & Page 13 of 16

14 4. When you click CA Submission you will be brought to a screen similar to the screen below. On this screen you need to read the CA Submission procedures. Once you have read the Procedures and Regulations you can then select the Term, CA Description and Date. Next click on Choose a file. This will open a new window displaying your folders and files. 5. Locate your PDF assignment and click Open. When you are satisfied that you selected the correct Term, CA Description and Date and Choose a file, click Submit. This will start the upload of your of assignment. This may take several minutes depending on the size of your file and your internet connection speed. 6. When you have submitted your assignment correctly you will receive a text message on your mobile phone (dependant on you providing your correct mobile number to the Institute), stating you have new correspondence in My Institute. You will receive a receipt under the My Correspondence link in My Institute. Finally where you have provided us with your address, you will also receive an copy of the receipt as well. 15 Uploading Your Continuous Assessment Submission Group Work Where a group assignment has been set, only one assignment submission is required per group. All group member names must be provided on the Assignment Cover Sheet and Assignment Feedback Form. One member of the group should be nominated to upload the assignment on behalf of the other members. The process is the same as for submitting an individual assignment. Each individual member of the group must submit an assignment cover sheet. Note: Where specified by the module coordinator individuals in group assignments might not be awarded the same grade. The module coordinator will make this explicit when releasing the assignment brief. In such an instance each member may be required to complete a separate journal, diary, or report on the division of roles, duties, etc. in order to provide evidence of their input. Again this requirement will be made explicit by the module coordinator. All such individual journal or diary documents should include a separate cover and feedback sheet at the front with the individual s name (excluding the other group members) and will need to be included as appendices in the group assignment submission. For examples Appendix 1 Sherry Smith s Diary, Appendix 2 Jim Jones Diary, etc. This ensures individual accountability throughout the assignment process. The criteria for the individual and group parts of the grade will be known well in advance so you will know what you have to work toward. If you are unsure of the criteria or specifications for a group assignment, you should clarify these with the module coordinator before commencing your work. 16 LATE SUBMISSION The following penalties apply to coursework submitted late: Coursework submitted up to one week late will be deducted 10 marks Coursework submitted more than one week but up to two weeks late will be deducted 20 marks. Coursework received more than 2 weeks late will not be accepted. The full policy on late submission can be found at If there are extenuating circumstances, the Institute may award an extension at its discretion. However, any such circumstances should be accompanied by written evidence to support the claim (e.g. doctor or employer s note, etc.) and students must complete an Extension Request Form available from the Programme Manager. Assignments submitted after the deadline cannot be uploaded via the electronic upload facility in My Institute. Students submitting late (even if under extenuating circumstances) should their assignment to The assignment must be in pdf format (hard copy assignments not accepted). Students will receive a receipt once their assignment has been received. As per the regulations above, assignments received later than two weeks after the submission date without an approved extension will not be accepted or graded. Students submitting late should still use the plagiarism checker. ASSESSMENT RESULTS You will receive an and SMS message alerting you to the release of your assignment results (electronically) on My Institute. These results are provisional. You will also receive feedback on your assignments, on a feedback sheet which the examiner completes. PLEASE NOTE: FOR A MODULE THAT HAS MORE THAN ONE ASSIGNMENT - FOR FIRST ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED LATE (SUBJECT TO THE REGULATIONS OUTLINED ABOVE AND REGARDLESS OF FORMAL EXTENSION BEING GRANTED) THESE WILL BE GRADED WITH THE SECOND ASSIGNMENTS AND RESULTS WILL BE ISSUED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE RESULTS FOR THE SECOND ASSIGNMENT.
