1 BUSINESS PLAN Organizing the Reality Television Competition Green, Young and Innovative The Paramaribo Hub and the Project Team This project will be initiated by a team of the Global Shapers Paramaribo and lead by an organizing committee consisting of at least three Global Shapers of the Paramaribo Hub plus at least two other members (a producer experienced in entertainment business and one or more representatives of established partnerships e.g. participating companies, government and/or university). In a recent gathering during which various themes were ranked, sustainable development clearly came out as the most prioritized theme by the Global Shapers Paramaribo for During this session various related themes and strategies were also recognized environment, education, citizen participation and volunteerism. The Global Shapers Paramaribo will focus on these issues with an overarching goal to promote and enhance sustainable development in Suriname. If we become successful our accomplishments will contribute to making Suriname a model society when it comes to addressing environmental issues. Additionally, our accomplishments can contribute to global efforts to mitigate environmental issues such as climate change and accumulation of waste on land and in the world s oceans. Therefore, organizing the reality television competition Green, Young and Innovative, fits the current mission, strategies and objectives of the Hub. Potential Partners - The Government - The Directorate for Environment of the Ministry of Labour, Technological Development and Environment (ATM) will be approached to be part of the organizing committee in order to gain national support for this project. If this approach is not feasible due to governmental constraints, experts of this Directorate will be consulted about the contents of the project (e.g. selected themes). A partnership would also help synchronize student specializations to the labour market. - Companies - Staatsolie NV and Telesur NV are two major companies in Suriname that organize the Suriname Got Talent Show a talent competition between schools. Because these companies have established partnerships and experience in reality television competition shows, it will be a strategic move to secure their cooperation and support. Staatsolie also is a company that aims to green up their company profile. Engaging in Green, Young and Innovative will contribute to their company image, might uncover techniques that could reduce the environmental footprint of some of their production processes and help synchronize student specializations to the labour market. Fernandes NV is another big Surinamese company with many production processes that will be targeted to become engaged in this project.

2 - The University Various experts of the university will be asked to become part of the jury or become a supervisor for the students. Additional to these primary roles, the experts will also function as thematic advisors. The Participants Every student younger than 28 and person younger than 23 years is allowed to apply. Supervisors will be hired, covering various fields of expertise, such as water management, civil engineering, architecture, environmental science & policy, agriculture and environmental law. Designs can range from miniatures of carbon neutral homes to a draft law tackling environmental issues. In order to ensure participation we will develop four strategies: 1. Effective promotion prior to the competition 2. Organize a teach-in 3. Proper supervision of participants by experts 4. Identify and offer prizes that will attract the type of participants we are looking for 5. Explore the possibilities of regional scholarships The Jury As in any competition, there will be a jury. The expert jury members will be trained and coached on how to comment properly as they will have an encouraging/ inspiring and informing role towards the participants and the public. To insure fairness, a transparent selection procedure will be developed and jury members are not allowed to be supervisors. The teach-in In order to enhance effective participation to achieve our objectives, we will organize a teach-in consisting of: 1. An introduction about the project outline, objectives and rules 2. A detailed presentation on Suriname s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and vulnerability to climate change by a member of the project team or focal organization of the Second National Communication to the UNFCCC (2013) 3. A session on idea framing and product design 4. A session on business implementation The teach-in will provide the participants, supervisors and jury with the knowledge and tools to fulfill their tasks accordingly.

Limited availability of high quality tv production in Suriname 4. Dependence on different actors (e.g. supervisors, producer, technicians) Opportunities 1. Inspiring others to e.g. initiate spin-off projects 2. Increasing awareness of companies on possibilities to adopt innovative ideas and products 3. Creating momentum and conditions for scaling-up the project 4. Building relations and increasing social capacity of the project team Threats 1. Time restraints of project team 2. Insufficient response and participation 3. Unavailable funds 4. Unforeseen technical problems during production 5. Power outage during show By actively taking advantage of our network (S-3) and Hub s resources (S-6) we can compensate our budgetary constraints (W-1) and mitigate the threat of funds being unavailable (T-3). By actively taking advantage of our network (S-3), Hub s resources (S-6), good organizational skills (S-5), creativity and entrepreneurial spirit (S-1) we can alleviate our dependence on the different actors (W-4), reduce the risk of insufficient participation (T-2) and create the momentum and conditions necessary to scale- up the project (O-3) With our good organizational skills (S-5), creativity and entrepreneurial spirit (S-1) we can accelerate the development of a strong group cohesion (removing W-2) and adaptively respond to occurring time restraints of the project team (T-1), unforeseen technical problems (T-4) and power outage (T-5). By making use of our good organizational skills (S-5) and entrepreneurial spirit (S-1) we can build relations, increase the social capacity of the team and Hub (O-4) and inspire others to initiate spin-off projects (O-1) By making use of our creativity, entrepreneurial spirit (S-1) and network (S-3) we can successfully transpose our (professional) knowledge on climate change (S-2) through this project into increased awareness of companies on possibilities to adopt innovative ideas and products (O-4)

Prizes Prizes will consist of cash prizes and inspirational green accessories or objects for the winner and two runners-up with a total of 3000 USD. The exact allocation of this budget will depend on the identified green accessories and objects but will be distributed appropriately among the three winners. We will also explore the possibilities with scholarships. Budget The project will cost at least USD 70,000. In order to securely claim ownership of the project more than 50% of the project will be covered by the grant. The size and applied strategies for the preparations and implementation of this project will therefore also depend on winning the grant.
