2 Introduction It has been well documented that the direct and indirect costs to the corporate sector due to employee illness has a significant impact on the bottom line due to absenteeism, reduced output when present ( presenteeism ), increased errors and accidents, impact on quality and higher rates of disability. Healthcare costs within the corporate sector are steadily rising and stood at 58% as a proportion of after tax profit in the U.S. in the year The case for proactive management of employee health is therefore very strong. There are three major areas of employee health that can be addressed to reduce corporate healthcare costs: 1. Better management of chronic illnesses such as Asthma and Diabetes. 2. Reduction of risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol. 3. Improving overall employee wellness quotient through diet, psychology consultation, exercise, medication compliance and preventive monitoring. Realizing the impact that proactive management of employee health can have on their bottom line, several leading corporates such as General Motors, Dow Chemical Co., Xerox, Lexmark and Pitney Bowes have implemented employee wellness programs and have documented significant cost savings from introducing these programs. Cost-to benefit ratios ranged from $5.47 to $6.47 for each dollar spent on such programs. Some examples are: A blood pressure control program at General Motors led to $3.10-to-$1 in savings- to-cost ratio in reduced absenteeism in year 2 that improved to $3.90-to$1 in year 3. A comprehensive health management program at Citibank resulted in a $4.56-to $1savings-to-cost ratio in reduced total healthcare costs. A medical self-care program offered at Union Pacific Railroad resulted in $2.78to $1 in savings-tocost ratio. A review of 13 studies of worksite health enhancement programs shows a $3.48to$1 ratio in reduced health care costs and a $5.82-to-$1 ratio in lower absenteeism costs. A meta-review of 42 published studies of worksite health promotion programs yielded the following data: 28% reduction in sick leave absenteeism 26% reduction in health care costs 30% reduction in workers compensation $5.93-to-$1 savings-to-cost ratio (Source: Partnership for Prevention web site

3 The role of Tele-health in Employee Wellness Programs Tele-health is a cost-effective strategy that corporate organizations can adopt to implement comprehensive employee wellness programs covering disease management, risk reduction and improvement of wellness quotient that can be conveniently delivered 24/7 in the office, at home, or onthe-go on a one-to-one basis.
