1 The Mount Barker Community Library is pleased to announce the release of it s ebook & eaudiobook collection. You can now use your library membership to borrow and download ebooks & eaudiobooks to your computer, ipod, iphone, ipad, MP3 player or ereader. The first time you use this new service, you need to create a NetLibrary account. From then on, you simply use your NetLibrary login and you can download ebooks and eaudiobooks from anywhere, at any time. While our collection is small at the moment we wanted to get a start providing this service to customers and are confident that within the next 12 months the range of popular titles available to libraries will increase as many of the issues associated with ebooks in libraries are sorted out. ** WMA format eaudiobooks will not play on ipods, iphones or ipads. About 100 of the eaudiobook titles are in WMA format with the remainder being MP3. *** A request to be notified when a title becomes availble can be made but it is not based on queue system and notification doesn t guarantee that you will be the first or only person to be notified and therefore may not be the fiorst to check out an item. Getting Started First-Time Users Go to the library s web site ( Click on to the ebooks tab Log in using your existing Library Card Number and PIN (contact the library if you don t already have a PIN). Click the Download eaudiobooks & ebooks link this will take you into the NetLibrary web site. 1

2 Click Create a Free Account in the top right corner of the screen, as shown above. In the next screen, create a NetLibrary account for yourself by filling in all fields, as shown. We recommend that you use your Library Card Number as your Username. You can create your own unique Password. Click the Create Account button and your NetLibrary account will be automatically created. Make sure you remember your NetLibrary Username and Password from now on. It s your passport to free ebook and eaudiobook downloads! Once you have set up an account you can go directly to the Netlibrary site ( for future downloading. About ebooks & eaudiobooks licences The ebooks and eaudiobooks available through your Mount Barker Community Library membership have Digital licences which set the expiry date and other conditions of the loan. When the licence of a downloaded item expires the ebook or eaudiobook will no longer open on your computer or portable device. The file, however, remains on your computer or portable device and will need to be deleted manually from the device. Download eaudiobooks Process Note: eaudiobook can be quite large and it is not advisable to try and download them at the library as the time that it takes to download may exceed the amount of time that you have booked on a library PC. 1. Log in to your NetLibrary account. See Manual Download (itunes users) below if you use itunes to listen to eaudiobooks or transfer them to an ipod. 2. Locate an eaudiobook that you would like to download. 3. Click the Download this eaudiobook link for the eaudiobook to go to the Download this eaudiobook page. 2

3 4. Click thecd Quality button in the Manual Download box. Or, click the Radio Quality button if you have a dial-up connection and will not listen to the eaudiobook on a portable listening device. 5. In the File Download window, click Save and save the eaudiobook file on your computer or directly to you portable device. Note: You must begin listening to WMA format eaudiobook in Windows Media Player to obtain a license to play it before disconnecting your Internet connection or transfering to a portable device 6. On your computer, right-click on the eaudiobook file and select open with Windows Media Player to begin listening to the eaudiobook. Manual Download Options (itunes users) Use this process to download an eaudiobook in MP3 format if you want to listen to it in itunes or transfer it to an ipod. Note: You cannot listen to an eaudiobook in protected WMA format in itunes. 1. Click the Download this eaudiobook link for the eaudiobook to go to the Download this eaudiobook page. 2. Click the CD Quality button in the Manual Download box. 3. In the File Download window, click Save and save the eaudiobook file on your computer in a location that you will remember. 4. Open itunes and drag the eaudiobook file to the itunes window. 5. Right-click on the eaudiobook in itunes and click Get Info. 6. Click the Options tab, check the Remember playback position box, and click OK. Note: If you stop listening to an eaudiobook before you finish, this option returns you to your stopping point when you resume. You can now listen to the eaudiobook in itunes or transfer it to your ipod: If your ipod is set to automatically update when plugged into itunes, the eaudiobook automatically transfers to the ipod. If your ipod is set to manually update, identify the eaudiobook segments in itunes and drag them to the ipod. When the transfer is complete, eject your ipod. The eaudiobook is in the music folder. 3

4 Check Out and Download ebook Process The following information describes the process to Check Out and Download an ebook. Before you download and read an ebook offline, you must have Adobe Digital Editions installed and activated on your computer. Adobe Digital Editions is available at no charge from When you install Adobe Digital Editions, you are prompted to authorize and activate your computer in order to read protected items and transfer them to other computers and portable devices. You must have an Adobe ID to authorize your computer, and you are prompted to get one at no charge during the installation. If you will transfer ebooks from your computer to a portable device, both the device and the computer must be authorized with the same Adobe ID. If you do not get your no-charge Adobe ID when you install Adobe Digital Editions, you can create an Adobe account and get an Adobe ID at the Adobe Sign In page Note: Download ebooks to your personal computer only. Do not download them to a public computer in your library. To check out and download an ebook to your computer: 1. Search for the ebook that you want to download. 2. Click the Show Details link for the title to view the ebook Details page. 3. Click Check Out & Download this ebook. 4. If you haven t already done so and if prompted, log in to your NetLibrary account. 5. Click the Download this econtent button on the Download this econtent page. 6. Click Open in the file download box that appears. The ebook downloads and opens in Adobe Digital Editions. The ebook PDF file is saved to the My Digital Editions folder in the My Documents folder on your computer. Note: If you click Save in the file download box, you save an ACSM file on your computer. Double-click the file to open it in Adobe Digital Editions. 7. Enjoy reading the ebook in Adobe Digital Editions. 4

5 Transfer an ebook to a portable device After you download an ebook to your computer, you can transfer it to a compatible portable device. Simply plug your device into your computer, look for the device icon in the left hand menu in Adobe Digital Editions, and drag the ebook title to the icon. Notification Requests If all of the library's copies of an ebook title are currently in use when you try to access the title, you see a link for the notification request option. Click the link to receive an message when a copy of the title is available. The message that you receive: States that the title is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Includes a link that you can click to go directly to the title so you can access it if it is still available or place another notification request if it is not. Any other users of the library who have a notification request for the same title receive the same message, at the same time as you. Note: If you use a spam filter to block junk , add notification@netlibrary.com or netlibrary.com to your list of approved senders so you will receive the message. Checking in ebooks Quite often you may finish reading an ebook before the Loan period (3 weeks) has expired. Customers are encouraged to Check in their ebook items once read so that you can borrow more items (current limit is 2 ebooks) and to make titles available to other users. Note: Only ebooks can be checked in. eaudiobooks do not have this capability. To Check in an ebook once it has been read: 1. Log in to your Netlibrary account 2. Click on Checked Out Items at the top right hand corner of the screen 3. Click on View this ebook 4. Click on Home The selected item has now been checked back in allowing you to borrow more ebooks and making the selected title available to other users. 5
