1 CHAPTER 8 Navigating the Revolution Management Console The Revolution Management Console is an administrative tool for service personnel that allows the subsystem operation to be monitored, events to be viewed, and FRU s to be identified for replacement. It is a Java application that can be used on a variety of platforms. 2 Navigating the Revolution Management Console 8.1 Install the Revolution Management Console on Clients The Revolution Management Console may be installed on clients. This section will detail the requirements and the installation procedure Requirements The Revolution Management Console may be installed on Windows, Linux, MAC or Unix clients. System Requirements 256 MB RAM (minimum) 80 MB available hard disk space minimum (100 MB is preferred) Windows Requirements Intel Pentium processor 120 MHz or above Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, 2003, Windows XP Professional or Home Edition Linux/Unix Requirements Any flavor with X-Windows No other specific requirements Installation on a Remote Client NOTE: A Java virtual machine is included with this download. It will automatically run when the shell script is executed. Windows After downloading the software from the CD, double-click install.exe. Linux/Unix/Solaris SPARC 1. After downloading the software from a CD, open a shell. 2. Change directories (cd) to the directory where the installer was downloaded. 3. 3 Log On NOTE: A Java virtual machine is NOT included with the Unix download. It must be obtained from the Sun J2SE site (http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads). Solaris SPARC 1. After downloading the software from a CD, open a shell. 2. Change directories (cd) to the directory where the installer was downloaded. 3. At the prompt type: install.bin 8.2 Log On 1. Open the front cabinet. 2. Pull out and open the Platform Service Processor (laptop). 3. Double-click the icon to open. 4. Enter the IP address/hostname Port User Name (default ADMIN) Password (default COPAN) 5. Open a terminal window on the laptop by right-clicking on the screen and selecting xterm. 6. 4 Navigating the Revolution Management Console 8.3 Revolution Management Console User Interface The Revolution Management Console displays information about the Revolution Storage subsystem. The information is organized in a tree hierarchy. Menu Toolbar Tree Display Area Connection Info Console Log Info RACK CONTROLLER DISPLAY AREA Use the tree to navigate the various rack controllers and their storage. The tree can be expanded or collapsed to show only the information desired. To expand an item that is collapsed, click on the icon next to the item. To collapse an item, click on the icon next to the item. Double-click on the item will toggle the expanded/collapsed view of the item. When an object in the tree is highlighted, the right-hand pane contains detailed information about the object. Select one of the tabs for more information. The right side of the console log located at the bottom of the window displays information about the numbers of new events received. The left side of the console log located at the bottom of the window displays the last rack controller connected to or logged off. When hovering over one of the objects in the tree, a box with information about the object will appear. 8-4 Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual

5 Revolution Management Console User Interface Tree Icons The tree allows the user to navigate and find various information about the system. A box with information about the object will appear when hovering over an object. The icons will be highlighted based on the status level. There are four levels of system status notification: Green - system is online Grey - system status is unknown Black - the system is offline Pink - firmware download in progress The icons represent the following elements in the Revolution Storage Icon Description PSM Host. When this icon is highlighted, general information about the system is displayed on the right. System Management. Highlighting this icon will provide information on the right about the status of everything that is attached to the rack controller. Shelf. When this icon is highlighted, information about the shelf will be displayed on the right. Canister. Highlighting this icon will provide information on the right about the status of this particular Canister. Storage Management. When this icon is highlighted, information about all the RAID sets available to a rack controller is displayed. ALL RAID Sets. When this icon is highlighted, information about all the RAID sets configured on the system will be displayed. Users. Highlighting this icon will enable the user to manage users in the right pane. Individual RAID Set. By highlighting this icon, information about an individual RAID set on the system is displayed, Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual 8-5

6 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Menu Bar The menu bar enables the user to execute various commands for servicing the system. Some of the options are available for every tree icon, but others may only be executed when specific icons are highlighted. Commands that are available will appear in black, and commands that are tree-icon specific, will be greyed out when they are unavailable for use. In addition to executing the commands from the menu, the user can right click on the tree icons and execute commands that appear in the dialog box that appears. Menu Item File Edit View Actions Tools Help Description From in this menu, the user can exit the application, connect to a new rack controller, re-connect to a rack controller or disconnect from a rack controller. From this menu, the user can change the preferences, remove a system, rename a system. This menu enables a user to refresh the screen or switch between rack controllers. This menu is only active when the shelf icon is highlighted. The user is able to perform shelf actions, like start or stop a shelf, download firmware, and reboot, from this menu This Menu enables a user to monitor the energy consumption. Provides information about the software and makes the online manual available Toolbar Icons The toolbar allows the user additional tools for navigating through the GUI. Icon Description Connect. Click on this icon to connect to a system. Reconnect. Allows the user to reconnect to the Shelf if it is unexpectedly disconnected. There are no time-outs between the Revolution Management Console and the shelf. Back. Clicking on this icon will navigate to the previously viewed screen. Forward. This icon becomes active after using the back icon. Clicking on it will return the user to the last viewed screen. Refresh Data. Click this icon to refresh the GUI screen. Delete. 7 Tree Icon Display Information 8.4 Tree Icon Display Information The information in the display area changes based on which tree item is selected (highlighted). The following section will describe what is displayed for each selected tree icon PSM Icon Display When a PSM is highlighted, general information about the system is displayed. In addition, the far right displays the status of the rack controller fans, the DC pair, and the connected rack controllers. Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual 8-7

8 Navigating the Revolution Management Console System Management Icon Display The information that is displayed when the System Management icon is highlighted appears on five tabs: System View, Thermo Map, Event, Alert, and Action Log. Clicking on the tabs displays the corresponding information about the system. System View Tab The system view displays the status for various components of the system. It will show status of the rack controller and each shelf along with its associated Canisters, fans, and power components. System Component Icons 8-8 Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual

10 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Thermo Map Tab The thermo map tab displays the information about the temperature of the shelves in system in a 3-D graphical view. Rotate the angle of the graph by clicking one of the buttons with arrows at the bottom. Click Reset to return the graph to its original position Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual

11 Tree Icon Display Information Event Tab The Event Tab displays all of the events that have occurred in the system. There are nine columns that display information about events that have occurred. If necessary use the scroll bars to view all of the columns and events. Comments about individual events may be added to the event table. Refer to Tracking Events for instructions on how to add and view comments. Column Event ID Description A number used for keeping track of error frequency. There also is an icon to display the type of event. Each error is assigned a Service Code and then the frequency is tracked using the event ID. For information on the Service Codes refer to Appendix A. 13 Tree Icon Display Information Alert The Alert tab displays the users that are configured to receive s. Users may be added, edited or deleted from this screen. Action Log Tab The Action Log Tab displays any actions that have changed the configuration of the system, along with who made the changes and when they were made. 14 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Shelf Icon Display When a shelf is selected (highlighted), information pertaining to that shelf is displayed on the right. There are tabs with additional shelf information: Overview, Thermo Map, Shelf Event (one for each shelf), and Drive Temp. Overview Tab The Overview Tab displays general information about the shelf. 15 Tree Icon Display Information Thermo Map Tab The Thermo Map Tab displays the temperature range of the entire shelf. It is displayed in a 3-D graphical view. 16 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Shelf Event Tab The Shelf Event Tab displays all of the events that have occurred on a particular shelf. Note: Each shelf has a separate tab. The following table lists the information displayed on this window. Comments about individual events may be added to the event table. Refer to Tracking Events for instructions on how to add and view comments. Column Event ID Description A number used for keeping track of error frequency. 17 Tree Icon Display Information Shelf Drive Temp Tab The Shelf Drive Temp Tab displays the temperature range of the entire shelf. It is displayed in a 3-D graphical view. When the drives are turned off, the temperature for all of them will display as blue boxes on the zero line. Click on one of the arrow buttons to rotate the graph. 18 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Canister Icon Display When a Canister Icon is highlighted, two tabs will appear in the right pane. The first tab provides information about the drive, and the second tab provides information about the Canister sensors. Drive Tab The Drive Tab provides a table with information about the drive status. There are twelve columns of information. Information about the drive can also be viewed by hovering over the any of the columns. Column Drive Config State Power Status Serial Number Product Read Err Start/Stop Cnt Defect Cnt. Seek Err. Hours On DMA CRC Err Temp Definition The drive column displays the location of the drive as (Canister #, Slot#). Tells the state of the drive. Possible parameters are either Ready, Unconfigured, Spare or Foreign. Tells whether the drive is turned off or on. The serial number of the drive. Vendor and type of drive. Read Error. Counts the # of errors that couldn t be recovered by ECC on-the-fly. Start/Stop Count. The # of times the drives have been powered on/off. Defect Count. The # of reallocated sectors. Seek Error. Error count on the # of errors on 1,000,000 seeks. The # of hours the drive has been powered on. The # of CRC errors on 8000 sectors of the ultra DMA transfer. 19 Tree Icon Display Information Sensor Tab There are four temperature sensors on each Canister. The Sensor Tab displays information on the temperatures over a period of time. To modify the sensor display screen: 1. Click on the Start Time button at the bottom of the screen. A calendar dialog up box will appear. 2. Select the date and the time to begin the graph. 3. Determine the length of time the graph will display by selecting a time from the drop down box. 4. Click the Update button to complete. Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual 8-19

20 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Storage Management Icon Overview When the storage management icon is highlighted, there are two tabs that display information about the storage attached to the rack controller: the Overview Tab and the Raidset Tab. When the storage management icon is expanded in the tree, the Shelf RAID Set Icon will appear. Overview Tab The Overview Tab displays information about all the storage connected to this rack controller. Parameter Total size in GB Total size in Block Definition The total amount of storage assigned to the rack controller. The total number of blocks assigned to the rack controller. Block Size The number of bytes in a block. This number will always be 512. Number of Raidsets Number of Drives The number of RAID Sets available to the rack controller. This number may change based on the number of shelves attached to the rack controller. The number of drives available to the rack controller. 21 Tree Icon Display Information Raidset Tab The Raidset Tab displays information about all the RAID sets attached to the rack controller. There are several columns that display information about the RAID set. Double click on a row to see all of the information on the RAID set in a dialog box. Column Number Shelf Status Mode Type Size in GB Size in Block Description The RAID set number configured in this shelf. The world wide unique name of the shelf. The RAID set status. Possible values are Fault Tolerant, Critical, Rebuild. The RAID set cache access. Possible values are Write Back On or Write Back Off. The type of RAID set configuration. Currently only RAID 5 is supported. The total size of the RAID set. The total number of blocks in the RAID set. Block Size The number of bytes in a block. This number will always be 512. Rebuild% Drive Cnt Raidset UUID This bar will show the rebuild progress. If there is not a rebuild in progress it will show N/A. Drive Count. The number of drives in the RAID set. 26 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Member Disk Tab The Member Disk Tab displays information about the disks that are in the RAID set. Column Description Drive The drive column displays the location of the drive as (Canister #, Slot #). Config State Status Serial Number Product Name Start/Stop Cnt. Defect Cnt. Hours on DMA CRC Err Temp The configuration status of the disk. Possible parameters are Ready and Configured. Tells whether the drive is ON or OFF. The serial number of the drive. The manufacturer and the product number of the disk. The number of spin ups for a drive. The number of reallocated events regardless of how many sectors are reallocated at this event. The number of hours the drive has been powered on. The number of CRC errors on 8000 sectors of DMA transfer. The temperature of the drive Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual

27 Tree Icon Display Information Users Icon Display When the user icon is highlighted in the tree, the right pane displays the list of users. Users can be added, deleted, and modified from this display area. Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual 8-27

28 Navigating the Revolution Management Console 8.5 Revolution Management Console Managing Users Users may be added, deleted, and edited from the User display screen. Add a User 1. Click on the Add button at the bottom of the screen. A Create a User dialog box will appear. 2. Enter the required criteria and click OK. The user name and password are case sensitive. Choose between Service and Admin for the group. The Service Group is for all service personnel, and the Admin Group is for COPAN Systems Level 3 support engineers Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual

29 Revolution Management Console Modify a User 1. Click the Edit button at the bottom of the screen, or highlight the user to be modified, right click and select Edit. 2. Modify the necessary criteria, and click OK. Delete a User 1. Highlight the user, and click Delete at the bottom of the screen, or highlight the user to be deleted, right click and select Delete. 2. 30 Navigating the Revolution Management Console Tracking Events Detailed information about events may be tracked within the shelf event and system event tabs in the GUI. From these tabs, comments about particular events may be added or viewed, and events maybe cleared or uncleared. Add a Comment to an Event 1. Right-click on an event. 2. Select Add Comment. 3. Enter any comments about the event and click OK. View Comments About an Event 1. Right-click on an event. A menu will appear. 2. Select Show Comments Revolution 300T/TX - Service Manual
