2 Research in Germany: Funding made easy! Anyone looking to work on fi rst-class research projects in Germany will fi nd hundreds of science and research institutions to choose from. German research is extremely varied and provides excellent opportunities and conditions for scientists and researchers from all fi elds. Germany has a wide range of funding options available for foreign scientists. This brochure provides a good overview of the funding opportunities offered by various institutions and organisations for international students, graduates, doctoral students, postdocs and senior scientists. 3 Structure of Brochure This brochure provides information on the funding opportunities offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) German Research Foundation (DFG) Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG) Max Planck Society (MPG) Helmholtz Association (HGF) Leibniz Association (WGL) The programmes presented here are arranged by the four target groups: Students, Graduates, PostDocs and Senior Scientists. These are then divided into the sections: eigners and Germans. The respective target group for the appropriate funding programme is marked in red. Some programmes apply to several target groups or are intended for both foreigners and Germans. The funding programmes are arranged in the chronological order of an academic career path, starting with the target group Students.

4 Germans 1 Study Visits / Study Seminars and Practicals (DAAD) Groups of 10 to 15 students from all disciplines from the 3rd semester under the guidance of a university teacher To maintain contacts between foreign and German universities and provide an insight into economic, political and cultural life in Germany Programme planning, full or part cost for board and lodging (depending on country of origin) Study visits: 7 to 12 days Study-integrated practical training: 7 to 12 days

5 Germans 2 DAAD University Summer Courses & Intensive Language Course Grants University summer courses: Students as from the 3rd academic year (all disciplines) Intensive language course grants: Students as from the 3rd academic year, graduates and doctoral students working in higher education (all disciplines except German studies, German as a foreign language and similar fi elds) Language and area studies / attendance of German language courses at a language institute in Germany Part-cost grants, if applicable, a fl at-rate travel allowance University summer courses: at least 18 days Intensive language course grants: 2 months (between June and January)

6 Germans 3 DAAD Study Scholarships Graduates of all disciplines Students: please check if available for your country To gain an academic degree (Master/Diploma) within the scope of a graduate or Master s programme 750 /month plus subsidiary allowances 10 to 24 months

7 Germans 4 Internships in the IAESTE programme eign bachelor and master students in the fi eld of natural sciences and engineering as well as agricultural and forestry sciences To attain internships in companies, to work in research institutes and higher education institutions 650 /month In general 2 to 3 months From the respective IAESTE National Committee

8 Germans 5 International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) Doctoral students from Germany and abroad To prepare outstanding doctoral students from Germany and abroad for a doctoral degree in cooperation with foreign and domestic universities at selected locations with excellent research and learning conditions; teaching language is English Depending on qualifi cation level and family status: from approximately 1,000 to 1,622 /month (by grant or working contract) 2 years with the possibility of a one year extension Applications should be submitted directly to one of the 49 International Max Planck Research Schools

9 Germans 6 International Helmholtz Research Schools and Graduate Schools Doctoral students from Germany and abroad To deliver interdisciplinary postgraduate training for all doctoral students that extends beyond their doctoral fi eld and enables them to acquire vital key competencies for careers in research or industry; in cooperation with universities; teaching language is English Fellowships or working contracts; amount depending on qualifi cation level and family status 3 years as a rule with a possible extension Applications should be submitted directly to the Helmholtz Research Schools or Graduate Schools

10 Germans 7 International Leibniz Graduate Schools Outstanding doctoral students from Germany and abroad Training of outstanding doctoral students within an excellent research environment (broad scientifi c area, international visibility of the institution, opportunity for doctoral students to be active members of their academic and social communities) Scholarships or working contracts; funding for consumables and travel allowances. Applications should be submitted directly to the coordinator of the Research Training Group

11 Germans 8 Individual Doctoral Projects at Max Planck Institutes Doctoral students from Germany and abroad To enable highly qualifi ed doctoral students to carry out a doctoral project within the scope of research work conducted at a Max Planck Institute Depending on qualifi cation level and family status: from around 1,000 to 1,622 /month (by grant or working contract) 2 years with the possibility of a one year extension Applications should be submitted directly to a Max Planck Institute

13 Germans 10 Individual Doctoral Projects at Fraunhofer Institutes Doctoral students from Germany and abroad To enable dedicated doctoral students to work on exciting projects in the latest areas of technology, ranging from microelectronics and communications to high-tech medicine and power engineering Remuneration is based on the German public service tariff. 17 Germans 14 Emmy Noether Programme (DFG) Excellent young researchers from all disciplines with postdoctoral experience of at least two years and up to a maximum of four years (medical researchers: up to six years) and substantial international research experience To enable highly qualifi ed young researchers to become eligible for a university career To recruit outstanding young postdocs working abroad to come/return to Germany Funding for an Independent Junior Research Group including the position of head of research group according to TVL 15 for the applicant, and personnel and consumables Funding for a fi ve year period. An interim appraisal will be carried out after three years; funding for a sixth year is possible in exceptional cases

18 Germans 15 Max Planck Grants for Advanced Postdoctoral Training Outstanding postdocs from Germany and abroad who have been working in science and research for at least 2 years or hold a comparable qualifi cation To gain additional knowledge and capabilities at a Max Planck Institute within the scope of the existing professional qualifi cation Depending on qualifi cation level or age and marital status: 2,100 to 3,260 /month for foreign postdocs 1,443 to 1,826 /month for domestic postdocs 2 years with the possibility of a one year extension Applications may be submitted directly to a Max Planck Institute at any time

23 Germans 20 Helmholtz-(University)Young Investigators Groups Top researchers from domestic or international institutions with proven research experience abroad, 2 to 6 years after doctorate who would like to participate in a Helmholtz programme To provide the best foreign and domestic junior researchers with excellent working conditions, to grant independence early on with secure career prospects not less than 250,000 p. a.: group leader position graduate students or technical staff (3 on average) funds for laboratory set-up The term of the research groups is 5 years with an evaluation after 3 to 4 years helmholtz_young_investigators_groups

26 Germans 23 DAAD Funding for Joint Research Collaborations (Programme des projektbezogenen Personenaustauschs) Academics, scientists, graduates, doctoral students, diploma students from Germany and a respective partner country with which an appropriate agreement has been signed To intensify scientifi c cooperation within the scope of a concrete, joint research project Travel and subsistence allowances paid by the respective sending side (DAAD funding for German partner only) Up to 3 years for the entire project (information in German only)

28 Germans 25 Temporary Position for Principal Investigators (DFG) Researchers who have completed their academic training (holding a doctorate) To give researchers (especially young ones) the opportunity to carry out a research project independently in the research environment in Germany best suited to conducting this project Funding for a temporary position as principal investigator, generally based on the TVÖD / TV-L E-13 salary scale and project funding (personnel, direct project costs, travel and publication expenses) Up to 36 months

29 Germans 26 Collaborative Research Centres (DFG) Doctoral students, postdocs and senior scientists To concentrate scientifi c research competence in particularly innovative fi elds and create internationally visible research priorities at universities, to promote interdisciplinary cooperation, to advance young researchers Opportunities for international cooperation, job opportunities further information and applications the centres should be contacted directly; applications may be submitted at any time

34 Germans 31 Bilateral Exchange of Academics and Scientists (DAAD) Academics and scientists from universities or research institutes working in all subject areas in Germany or in partner countries with which an appropriate agreement has been signed is available for a research or study stay within the scope of the bilateral exchange of academics and scientists foreign academics: the sending side pays the international travel costs, DAAD pays the subsistence costs; for German academics: DAAD pays a travel allowance, the receiving side pays the subsistence costs 2 weeks to 3 months (German only)

44 Germans 41.1 Heisenberg Programme - Fellowship (DFG) Outstanding researchers who qualify for a professorship by holding a habilitation or equivalent To provide excellent researchers with the opportunity to prepare for a leading position in science and research and to use the time to work on an advanced research topic Fellowship, travel costs and, where applicable, allowances towards stays abroad, publications cost 5 years max.

45 Germans 41.2 Heisenberg Programme - Professorship (DFG) Outstanding researchers who qualify for a professorship by holding a habilitation or equivalent To offer excellent researchers the reliable prospect of a professorship Candidates for a Heisenberg Professorship need to fi nd a German university which establishes a new professorship and will take over after the DFG funding expires Salary according to the W2 (or W3) salary level for professors 5 years max.

46 Germans 42 Alexander von Humboldt Professorship Academics of all disciplines from abroad, who are internationally recognised as leaders in their fi eld The professorships give universities also in cooperation with non-university research institutions in Germany the opportunity to establish or upgrade internationally visible research focus areas, thus raising their profi le 5 Million for academics in experimental disciplines, 3.5 million for researchers in theoretical disciplines for a fi ve year period Applications by German universities; non-university research institutions may also submit nominations jointly with a German university.
