8 TEACHER EDUCATION AT OISE Teacher Education has been a central part of education at the University of Toronto since the implementation of the Degree of Pedagogy in 894 and the establishment of the Faculty of Education in 907. OISE in its current form dates from the 996 merger of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) and the Faculty of Education of the University of Toronto (FEUT). Our teacher education programs reflect not only OISE s and the University s institutional priorities and values, but also the Ontario College of Teachers regulatory Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession, Seven shared principles, informed by research on best practices in teacher education, underpin both the Master of Teaching and in Child Study and Education: Teaching excellence Equity, diversity and social justice Research-informed Cohort-based learning communities School/field/university partnerships Faculty collaboration Coherence Within the framework of these seven shared principles, OISE offers two distinctive graduate-level teacher education programs: The Master of Teaching is a graduate level teacher education program. Our students register in full-time studies that lead to a Master of Teaching (MT) degree. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for an Ontario Teacher s Certificate of Qualification which certifies them to teach in Ontario schools. MT graduates will receive both their teacher qualification certificate and a graduate degree. Students can choose from three program specializations: o Primary/Junior (Kindergarten to grade 6) o Junior/Intermediate (grades 4 0) o Intermediate/Senior (grades 7 2) The in Child Study and Education offers a unique, research and inquiry-based teacher education program, engaging students in the science of learning and teaching. Eligible graduates are recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for a Certificate of Qualification, which qualifies the holder to teach in the primary and junior divisions of Ontario schools. As both of these programs make you eligible for teacher certification, you should not apply if you already have teaching qualifications in Canada (i.e., OCT certification, Bachelor of Education). OISE offers many other graduate degrees which can help certified teachers develop and enhance their careers. Education has always been a passion of mine as well as research. The Master of Teaching program allowed me to combine both of my passions. At OISE, I have been able to build my educational pedagogy, learn new strategies to implement in the classroom and work on my own research study. Caitlin Cheung, Master of Teaching student WITH OISE I CAN Become a Teacher and complete a Master s degree at the same time Our Master of Teaching (MT) and in Child Study and Education programs offer you the unique opportunity to earn both a graduate degree and to be eligible for teaching certification in Ontario. Omar Khaled, in Child Study and Education WITH OISE I CAN Earn a Master s degree in EducatioN Our Master of Education programs emphasize both academic and professional learning in a range of fields. With an OISE, you will enhance and expand your career options within and beyond the field of education in Canada and internationally. At OISE, I learned that I can be a driving force for meaningful social change. From developing programs for individual students in need, to plans of action for families in crisis, to comprehensive, province-wide programs combating violence at the societal level, OISE has enabled me to help create a better life for me, and for the clients we see. Brent Mulrooney, Student, School and Clinical Child Psychology The training, mentorship, and opportunities I received at OISE not only helped me discover how intrinsically rewarding working with clients can be but also opened my eyes to the kind of researcher-practitioner I want to become.
