Study Skills Seminar Your High School Toolkit Lesson 1 Time Management 101 Lesson 2 Organize Your Time and Space Lesson 3 Organize Your Things Lesson 4 Study Plans and Recovery Work Lesson 5 Formative Grades Lesson 6 Study Techniques Lesson 7 Note Taking Tools Lesson 8 Test Taking and Test Anxiety Lesson 9 Study Skills Recap

First, let s debrief from last week Discussion What did you learn about formative grades last week? How important is attendance?

Study Techniques Memorization Your mind is built to remember Your brain is the greatest tool in the world!! It never loses anything throughout your life unless you suffer from some type of brain injury/damage When we say we forget, we actually just have a lack of recall We are more likely to remember what we can relate to our own priorities or experiences

Memory Helpers Be interested if you don t find something interesting, try and make it interesting Be critical Pick the most important things to remember! When reading, look at the titles and headings of sections for clues on what is most important Make connections Connect with what you are learning Make the information meaningful to you Practice Study in several short periods and review often

Memory Devices Mnemonics A mnemonic is a memory device It s an effective and powerful tool that has been proven to help people remember details, lists, and all types of information What are some mnemonics that you know of and use?

Mnemonic Examples These really work! Leaves of three, let it be poison ivy Red next to yellow could kill a fellow! Red next to black won t hurt Jack! red coral snake Lefty loosey, righty tighty

Mnemonic Devices Acronyms Acronyms a word created using the first letter of each word of the important information We use acronyms everyday! Here are some examples SCUBA Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus FAQ Frequently Asked Questions NASCAR National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing

Mnemonic Devices Acrostics Acrostics a sentence in which the first letter of each word connects with the information you need to recall Here are a few common acrostics.. Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally order of operations when solving math problems My very educated mother just served us nachos the order of the planets

Activity Let s practice! Write your own sentence to help you remember the oceans in order by size: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic Use the first letter of each word PAIA What did you come up with?

Mnemonic Devices Chunking Chunking grouping related information into smaller, more manageable categories Many people believe we can recall about 7 different things at once try chunking into 7 groups (or less) We use chunking to remember phone numbers (10 digits) by adding parentheses and hyphens to chunk. Example or (347)

Activity Your turn! Test yourself. I m going to say 10 numbers aloud and ask you to repeat the numbers. Then, I ll say 10 numbers aloud, but say them like a phone number (pausing after the 3rd and 6th numbers). Let s see who has a much easier time with the second set.

Study Resources ANGEL Your new best friend Log in to ANGEL every day Teachers post: Calendars Videos Homework Assignments and Answers Online textbooks (where you can find animations) Class notes (you can pre-print these to be more efficient in class) Handouts Extra Help Resources

Flash Cards Vocabulary In 9 th grade, you have new vocabulary in every class. Stay on top of it! The best method is handwritten flash cards. You are 10 times more likely to remember what you write down. You can also use web resources like quizlet.com to test your knowledge in fun, and different ways

Flash Cards Let s make some... Take out your 9 th Lit Vocabulary words Spend time now making flash cards for this unit Your English teachers will be checking your vocabulary cards for this unit points will be awarded!

Next Session Lesson 7 Note Taking See you next time!
