1 Chemistry 3371F /16 Transition Metal Chemistry Description: The study of the effects of the electronic structure of transition metals on their properties, including coordination chemistry, electronic spectra, magnetic properties, and reactions. The general schedule for the experiments is given on page 5 of this handout. Required Text Inorganic Chemistry, 6 th Edition (Shriver and Atkins). Note: this is the textbook you used in Chem. 2271A and 2281G. If you require a copy, this book is available for purchase at the UWO Campus Bookstore. Second hand copies are also generally available. Required Materials Lab Manual Chemistry 3371F Laboratory Experiments Edition. This is required and can be purchased from the UWO Campus Bookstore. Safety glasses are required at all times when working in the laboratory. The UWO Undergraduate Chemistry Society sells these at the beginning of term should you require a pair. Students who normally wear prescription glasses must wear safety glasses or goggles over their regular glasses. A lab coat is also required. A hard covered laboratory notebook is needed for recording all data and observations in the laboratory. 1

If the midterm is missed for valid reasons (you must arrange an appointment with an Academic Counselor in the Faculty of Science office and provide appropriate documentation see below) the weighting will be transferred to the final examination. It is the policy of the Department of Chemistry that when a student takes a test or examination, they have deemed themselves fit to do so. Claims of distress or medical issues after the fact will not be considered for the basis of a grade appeal. For those students who cannot write the midterm test on the date indicated because of religious or class conflicts see Dr. Ragogna immediately. All laboratory experiments and reports must be completed in order to obtain a passing grade in Chem. 3371F. If you are unable to meet a course requirement (including laboratory sessions) due to illness or other serious circumstances, you must provide valid medical or other supporting documentation to the Dean's office as soon as possible. It is the student's responsibility to contact Prof. Ragogna to make alternative arrangements once the accommodation has been approved. In the event of a missed final exam, a "Recommendation of Special Examination" form must be obtained from the Dean's Office immediately. Course Objectives: Registrants are expected, as a result of the lectures, lab experiments, and associated required reading, (i) to understand how electron configurations control spectral and magnetic properties of d- block metal complexes (ii) to become familiar with the common properties of coordination compounds (such as coordination numbers, stereochemistry, isomerism) and with factors influencing the stability and reactivity of complexes; (iii) to know and be able to use the nomenclature for coordination compounds; (iv) to understand the bonding theories commonly used to interpret the properties of complexes; (v) to be able to interpret and predict the physical and chemical properties of complexes in terms of their electronic structure using the above bonding theories. (vi) To be able to describe the structure and bonding properties of transition metal organometallic complexes. The laboratory course is intended to augment the lecture course by providing experimental examples to illustrate general principles. It is also intended to teach experimental techniques that are commonly used in coordination chemistry. Labs begin the week of September 14, 2015 with a mandatory library session. Problem Sets Several problem sets will be assigned during the term. Solutions will be posted to OWL. Course prerequisite: Chemistry 2271A and 2281G, or the former Chemistry 251. A Notice from the Registrar: "Unless you have either the requisites for this course or written special permission from your Dean to enrol in it, you will be removed from this course and it will be deleted from your record. This decision may not be appealed. You will receive no adjustment to your fees in the event that you are dropped from a course for failing to have the necessary prerequisites." 4 The topics likely to be covered are outlined in section below. The order of presentation and the number of lectures devoted to each are approximate. 1. Laboratory Experiments The laboratory experiments are designed to illustrate the principles discussed in the lectures. A lab report must be submitted for each experiment (details are provided in the 3371F lab manual). This will either be in the form of a written report, data sheet or an oral report. You will be given your individual schedule on the first day of classes (not everyone performs the same experiment on the same week).
