2 The Library is Hosting the Third Annual Snuggle Up and Read When: January 12, :00-7:30 Who: Braeburn Families K-5 Where: Braeburn s Library Media Center What: Snuggle up with some good books, crafts and hot cocoa while browsing the library. You and your family can check out books too!! Why: This is a great way for families to celebrate Family Night, read together, check out books as a family, create a puppet show together, make a craft and enjoy some hot cocoa all as a family. Please mark your calendars and consider joining us. Wear your most comfortable pajamas and snuggle up and read! Kindergarten Calling All Children Eligible for Kindergarten in the Fall If you have a child who will be five years old on or before Jan 1, 2018, please call the school office at after the first of January so that we may add your child to our incoming Kindergarten list. If you know of a friend or neighbor with an incoming Kindergarten student, please have them give us a call as well! Thank you. We also believe that we must be committed at all times to protecting students' privacy and providing them with a powerful and safe educational experience. To that end, the West Hartford Public Schools follow the legal requirements of Public Act to promote the safety and security of all students and staff. In compliance with Connecticut State Law, we update online programs used within the district that house student data. The programs may be used district-wide, in a very small number of classrooms, or with individual students. 3 Ruff Ruff Read This year the library is sponsoring a unique and exciting program for young readers, a reading dog! From January through June, our reading dog, Justice, will visit the library media center and provide a quiet, safe and comfortable companion for readers. Studies show that the presence of a trained therapy dog reduces anxiety with children who may or may not be nervous when reading aloud. Some students are afraid to make mistakes when reading or feel self-conscious. When students read with a dog, they begin to relax and can enjoy the experience of reading books successfully. Justice and his trainer, Mrs. Perlstein come to Braeburn from the Tails of Joy, a nonprofit organization. According to the Tails of Joy website ( All visiting teams are registered with a nationally recognized animal therapy organization. Registration ensures that the team has been evaluated for skill and appropriateness for interacting with those wishing visits and that the handler has training in related topics such as privacy, protection against disease transmission and stress recognition in their partner. It also ensures that the team is covered by liability insurance. Everyone at Braeburn School, including staff, would benefit from Justice s visits. Justice will be introduced to our school community through an assembly. Students and staff will hear from Mrs. Perlstein about Justice s life and training and students who wish to pet or wave to Justice will have an opportunity. Some students will work with Justice and Mrs. Perlstein. Our goal for Justice is to read with as many students as possible throughout the year. Claudine Lavoie Library Media Specialist
