1 The Lions VOTE!!! 2016 Goal: The purpose of this school wide activity is to encourage civic social responsibility and learning of the voter registration process among students at Trailblazers Academy. Sanctuary Commitments: Democracy, Open communication, social responsibility Objectives: Students will understand what is involved in the registration and voting process. Students will simulate registration to become familiar with the process. Materials: Computer, Screen for PowerPoint Presentation r s Registration, Pencils, Markers, Construction Paper, My Count Stickers Dates: 11/2/16 SE 8 th Groups 11/3/16, SE 6 th Grade Groups 11/4/16 SE 7 th Grade Groups School Wide Activity for November: Warm Up: (2 Minutes) Review classroom expectations Ask students, When is election Day this year? Instructors can inform students, Election Day will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 and share the following facts below: In 1845, the United States Congress chose a single date for all national elections in all states. The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November was chosen so that there would never be more than 34 days between Election Day and the first Wednesday in December. Election Day is held on a Tuesday so that voters will not have to vote or travel on Sunday.
2 Introduction: Explain to students that you are going to talk about why voting matters, how the process works and how they are going to simulate completing the voter registration card. Lastly, students will get an opportunity to participate in a mock vote. (2 minutes) Present Power Point Presentation, Review all 15 slides with the students. (16 Minutes) Handout voter registration card to students, simulate the process (10-12 minutes) After completing voter registration cards, Students can decorate and color the registration cards. Students Can chose to take the cards home or color them and have them posted in school s bulletin board. Explain as part of the democratic process they are given options. (10 min) Then give each student a blank voter registration card to take home. The homeroom or grade that returns the most completed cards by Nov, 7, 8:00 AM to Ms. Shinn in the cafeteria. Winning grade or homeroom will be awarded with a pizza party or lunch from garden caterings. (2 min) Mock voting. Students will be handed a ballot in which they can chose a presidential candidate. Inform students, this is a private matter in which they do not have to share their voting decisions with anyone. Reiterate the importance of taking part in the democratic process. Encourage open communication which includes respect of each other s choice/opinion. (5 Min) (The Results of the mock election results will be shared during Breakfast on Nov. 7, 2017) Closure (5 Min) Debrief with students by asking their about voting and the activity Reiterate the power of voting, change starts with voting, Every vote counts Handout My vote matters stickers to students. Transition to next class

Take pictures of the activity/students participation in mock voting and all School Wide Awareness Activity Part 2: (Ms. Keeya will be focal point person for the activity with Student leadership Student Government Leadership will meet on 10/28/16 to create an Election Day awareness table and fact sheets. Research at least 10 fun facts about elections Create an Awareness poster/bulletin The Election Awareness table should include voter registration cards, facts sheets created, colorful décor, Awareness table should be completed by 10/31/16. Student leadership should explore other school wide to raise election awareness, example Election Day party, and Election Day jeopardy Obtain students feedback
