2 Introduction Welcome to Falkirk Community Trusts Active Schools Training programme! Our Training Courses Our courses are open to everyone, school staff, parents, community volunteers, senior pupils and coaches. If you re looking for new ideas for an after school club or simply have an interest in sport and physical activity you should come and try one out. We keep our courses light hearted and good fun so come prepared to join in the activities! We recommend you come along dressed in clothes suitable for taking part in physical activity and bring along a bottle of water. Course Fees If you already volunteer with Active Schools and Sports Development or are considering volunteering with us, most of the courses are free of charge (unless otherwise stated). If there are other related courses you would like to go to, please contact us and we will help find a course nearby which you can attend. Please note: If you have booked onto a course and do not turn up on the day you may incur a charge. 4 Essential Courses Emergency First Aid Date 20th November pm 6pm Larbert High School Contact Info Emergency First Aid Date 17th March pm 6pm Larbert High School Contact Info This course is aimed at coaches or volunteers working with Active Schools or Sports Development. Emergency First Aid will give an introduction to basic first aid, including CPR, recovery position, treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, recording incidents and how to get further help. An attendance course, valid for one year. 4

5 Encouraging Girls Let s Go Girls Date 8th November pm - 4pm Grangemouth Sports Complex Contact info kirsty.wallace@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Skipping, fitness and netball - all three elements will be covered throughout the day; you will leave with lots of ideas for running clubs, how to encourage girls to participate in sporting activities and a few lesson plans to get you started. 5

6 Dance & Fitness Fitness Fun Date 28th October pm-6pm Grangemouth High School Contact info This course is designed to show warm-ups and circuit sessions that are age appropriate for children to take part in before, during and after the school day. It will cover safe and simple exercise techniques that will allow children to get fit and have fun. Children will learn to improve motor skills, balance and endurance through the taught exercises. The class will be mainly practical, so please bring appropriate clothing and footwear to take part. You will go through exercises in a circuit format and try variations of every exercise that is designed to adapt to different levels of ability. 6

7 Funky Dance Ideas Date 12th November pm - 6pm St Mungo s High School Contact info kirsty.wallace@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This session is aimed at anyone with an interest in dance, you do not need great technical ability just an enthusiasm for dance and ability to move in time with the music. A new funky routine will be delivered with accompanying note that can be taught to children during after school sessions and/or activity sessions; further ideas for running dance activity clubs will also be delivered. Fun n Games Date 28th January pm - 6pm St Mungo s High School Contact info jen.cairns@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This course is aimed at volunteers and teachers and is designed to show warm-ups, games and activities which can be used as part of an extra-curricular club, a holiday programme session or within your class P.E. lessons. Be prepared to get involved with the games, share your own knowledge and have some fun. 7

8 Let s Get Physical Date 7th February am pm Grangemouth Sports Complex Contact info kirsty.wallace@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Cheerleading, Funky Dance and First aid all in one course! Cheerleading will cover the arm positions that form the basis for routines and cheers and focus on a routine and cheers that you can use again. Funky Dance will cover basic breakdance moves and give you another new routine that you can deliver to your pupils and First Aid will give an introduction to basic first aid attendance course, including CPR, recovery position, treatment of minor injuries and illnesses and recording incidents. 8

9 Sport Specific Junior Jog Scotland/Cross Country Date 24th September pm - 6pm St Mungo s High School Contact info jen.cairns@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Junior Jog Scotland/Cross Country is aimed at School Staff, Coaches and Volunteers delivering cross country sessions to primary aged pupils. The course will provide you with fun skills and session ideas for a 4 week taster block of cross country running and the knowledge & understanding to go back to your primary schools to deliver fun, quality sport sessions to your pupils. Primary Teachers Tennis Date 7th October pm - 7pm Camelon Education Centre Contact info kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org The course will give school teachers the confidence and tools to deliver tennis to a class of children in a small place. Teachers attending the course are given ideas for teaching skills, strokes, and competitive activity as well as empowered to use AEGON schools tennis pack which has already been received by every school. Teachers will also gain an understanding of the Falkirk District p5/p6 tennis initiative, what additional coaching is available to them, and competition cluster dates and rules. 9

10 Netball Date 22nd October pm - 6pm Hallglen Primary School Contact info charlotte.main@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This course is suitable for new and experienced netball deliverers. The session will give you a chance to share games and drills that work well, the basics that are needed to run a netball club in a primary school and getting you Match Ready, developing your knowledge and skills in a game setting and refereeing. Cardio Tennis Secondary Schools CPD Date 28th October pm - 7pm Denny High School Contact info chris.rose@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Cardio Tennis is a tennis inspired workout played to up-tempo music. It does not require tennis skills, it is about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having fun. Whether the ball goes in or out is irrelevant as the main purpose is to get fit and stay healthy. The 3 hour, Cardio Tennis Teacher Training Course has been developed for secondary school teachers, to provide them with the knowledge and skills to deliver Cardio Tennis within a school environment. The Cardio Tennis Teacher Resource which teachers receive following the Cardio Tennis Teacher Training Course, contains guidance, activity cards and lesson plans to support teachers to deliver Cardio Tennis and provide pupils with a fun, tennis inspired workout. Teachers attending the course are also provided with guidance on how to implement and market Cardio Tennis, how Cardio Tennis can link to other curriculum subject areas as well as how to access guidance and resources to support the delivery of both traditional and modified versions of the sport in schools. Following attendance at our Cardio Tennis Teacher Training course, the school will also receive a Schools Tennis Cardio Top up Pack (this is limited to one per school and only if the school has not previously received one). 10

12 Primary Teachers Basketball Date 11th November pm - 6pm Falkirk High School Contact info kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This course is aimed at teachers in primary schools aiming to deliver basketball to P4 - P7 s. The course is designed to show teachers skills and drills relevant to teaching basketball and the technical aspects of the sport. The course will also give teachers information on local clubs, primary school competitions and after school coaching. Primary Teachers Badminton P5-P7 Date 29th January pm - 6pm Kinnaird Primary School Contact info kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org An introduction to badminton for teachers aiming to deliver badminton to high numbers in small spaces. Included: drills, skills, games and techniques. Bikeability Cycling Training Assistant Date 12th February am - 4pm St Bernadette s Primary Contact info charlotte.main@falkirkcommunitytrust.org For those who wish to deliver Bikeability Level 1 & 2, this course is essential. Covering bike safety and working through the required criteria, this course will give you the confidence and skills to go ahead and deliver fun, safe cycle activities in schools. 12

13 Primary Teachers Golf Date 17th March pm - 6pm TBC Contact info kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This course is aimed at teachers in primary schools aiming to deliver the six-week ClubGolf programme. The course is designed to show teachers how to give children aged nine a first introduction to golf in primary school. It is designed as a fun activity using colourful, modified golf equipment which schools in Falkirk have all received. Ryder Cup curriculum for excellence materials are available to support delivery. Cricket Date 24th March pm - 6pm Maddiston Primary School Contact info stuart.raeburn@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Learn how to teach throwing, catching, batting and how to run a game of cricket. This course will give you the knowledge and skills to deliver cricket as part of your PE sessions and extra-curricular sessions. 13

14 Athletics Track and Field Date March 2015 (date TBC) 4pm - 6pm Grangemouth Stadium Contact info keith.bunyan@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Book up to this course and we will provide you with fun skills and sessions ideas for a 4 week taster block of Track and Field Athletics aimed at primary school aged children. Participants will gain the knowledge and understanding to go back to their primary schools to deliver fun, quality sports sessions to their pupils. Inclusive Tennis Teachers CPD (Primary & Secondary) Date 22nd April pm - 7pm Carrongrange School Contact info kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org The three-hour Inclusive Tennis Teacher Training Course has been designed to give teachers, teaching assistants in Special Schools and those teaching disabled young people in mainstream education the confidence and tools to deliver tennis to a class of children in a small space. The course is supported by an additional support needs resource and equipment pack. Each teacher attending the course receives: Schools Tennis Inclusive Equipment Pack (limited to one per school,if your school has not previously received one), additional support needs, Teacher Resource Guide to Schools Tennis, Schools Tennis Competition Guide, Tennis Activity Week Pack (cross curricular resource) and an Out of School Hours Tennis Club Toolkit. 14

15 Certified Sports Courses UKCC Level 1 Swimming Teachers Course (3 COURSES) Date 13th - 17th October th - 10th April th June - 3rd July 2015 : Contact info 10am - 6pm Falkirk High School 300 ( 150 bursary available, for more information Alan Reed) alan.reed@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This is an intensive week long training course, that will allow you to gain a nationally recognised qualification. The qualification will allow you to teach swimming to groups of children and will give you the experience and confidence to make a difference to children and help them learn to swim. 15

16 UKCC Tennis Level 1 (2 COURSES) Date 205 Contact info 1st, 2nd and 29th November 2014 (3 day course) Sept 27th,28th and Oct 19th 2014 (3 day course) 9am 5pm The Gannochy kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This course is the starting point for people who want to get involved in tennis and are enthusiastic about tennis, and want to help a coach deliver Mini Tennis. The main objectives are to train candidates in how to assist an LTA licensed coach with groups of mini tennis players. On successful completion of the Level 1 candidates will be able to: Motivate and inspire people to play tennis. Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Organise tennis activity constructively and safely. Plan and deliver a structured lesson using LTA Level 1 coach resources. Have basic knowledge of tactics, techniques and rules of tennis. Have a full understanding of the structure of Mini Tennis. Endorsed by the UKCC (United Kingdom Coaching Certificate),successful candidates will receive a Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Tennis awarded by 1st4sport.Falkirk Community Trust offer a volunteer development programme in Tennis drop Kirsty an if you would like more information. 17 Positive Coaching Scotland Date 4th February pm - 6pm Falkirk Stadium Contact info johnny.bannerman@falkirkcommunitytrust.org The Positive Coaching Scotland programme is about creating a positive environment in youth sport one which focuses on encouraging effort and learning, improving performance and fostering competition. This focus helps young people to understand the importance of effort rather than winning at all costs. This course is open to teachers, coaches, club leaders, parents and sports leaders. Development Activities Course Date 10th May am-4pm Little Kerse Sports Complex, Grangemouth 40 Contact info aidan.forbes@falkirkcommunitytrust.org The course is aimed at Coaches working with players ages 13+. The 6-hour course is open to all interested parties ages 16 and over, experienced or otherwise, who work with youths/adults. In addition to delivering new content, the course will assist coaches to develop their coaching technique, focus on skill development and explore the best age specific activities for developing youth/adult players. 17

18 Goalkeeping Certificate Date 10th May am-4pm Little Kerse Sports Complex, Grangemouth 40 Contact info This 6-hour course is designed to assist coaches aged 16+ who work with goalkeepers across all areas of the game. Coaching Footballers 13+ Date 15th & 22nd March am-4pm Woodlands Games Hall 55 Contact info This course is aimed at Coaches working with players 13+. The 12 hour course is designed to assist coaches with the planning, preparation, organisation and evaluation of their coaching sessions. Coaches should note that the course is mainly practical in nature with coaches being involved in the coaching and demonstration of themes. The course will focus on coaching style and the use of differentiation i.e. provision of practices to suit the wide range of abilities within the youth/adult game. This approach is applied to different themes such as passing, dribbling, shooting etc. Applicants must have completed the Development Activities course. 18

19 Early Touches Course Date 16th August am-4pm Woodlands Games Hall 40 Contact info This course is aimed at Football Coaches working with players ages The 6-hour course is open to all interested parties ages 16 and over, experienced or otherwise. In addition to delivering new content, the course will assist coaches to develop their coaching technique, focus on skill development and explore the best age specific activities for developing young players. Coaching in the Game Date 23rd & 30th August am-4pm Woodlands Games Hall 55 Contact info This course is aimed at Coaches working within Children s, Youth and Adult Game. This 12 hour course looks at the knowledge and understanding required to help players appreciate concepts such as width, depth and support within small sided and 11 aside games. The course is largely practical and prospective coaches are required to demonstrate the ability to coach basic strategies to players. Applicants must have completed either the 1.2 Coaching Young Footballers or Coaching Footballers 13+ course. 19

20 Rugby Ready Date 3rd September pm pm Denny High School Contact info stewart.milne@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Rugby Ready Date 1st September pm pm Larbert High School Contact info stewart.milne@falkirkcommunitytrust.org Rugby Ready is the minimum requirement for coaching rugby in Scotland and has been designed to both update current coaches on important information from both an IRB and Scottish Rugby perspective as well as provide an introduction to new coaches. This course will cover updates from the IRB and SRU along with practical coaching elements around the basics of the game and how to develop it at school age level. Coaching Young Footballers Date 13th & 20th September am-4pm Woodlands Games Hall 55 Contact info aidan.forbes@falkirkcommunitytrust.org This course is aimed at Coaches working with players ages This 12 hour course is designed to assist coaches with the planning, preparation, organisation and evaluation of their coaching sessions and focuses on coaching style and the use of differentiation i.e. provision of practices to suit the wide range of abilities within the primary school age group. 21 UKCC Tennis Level 2 Date 380 Contact info 25th & 26th October 2014 (2 day course) 15th & 16th December 2014 (2 day course) 9am 5pm The Gannochy Stirling University kirsty.humphries@falkirkcommunitytrust.org The Level 2 Coaching Assistant course is aimed at Coaching Assistants who want to improve their coaching skills and be able to work with groups of beginners on their own under the umbrella programme of a licenced coach. It is endorsed by the UKCC (United Kingdom Coaching Certificate) and successful candidates will receive a Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Tennis awarded by 1st4sport. It will build on the skills learnt on the Level 1 course and will expand your knowledge of working with groups of players in different environments. It will also focus on running short format competitions that will allow beginners to enjoy competing. On successful completion of the Level 2 candidates should be able to: Organise competition for groups of beginners, Coach Groups of beginners using differentiated equipment, Plan and deliver a structured lesson using LTA Level 2 coach resources, Give advice on tactical and technical improvement for beginners of Mini Tennis. 22 Getting Started In Basketball Date TBC 10am 4pm Grangemouth Sports Complex 35 Contact info The Getting Started award is basketball Scotland s introductory level leadership award. The award focuses on coaching beginners and young players, with a view to introducing them to basketball. During each course candidates will be continually assessed and given feedback on their knowledge of introducing individual skills. Those completing the course will be able to lead young players under the supervision of qualified coaches. Candidates looking to become assistant or head coaches should be advised to complete the appropriate UKCC course. This course will allow candidates to deliver blocks of coaching under the supervision of a qualified coach or teacher and will provide them with the necessary skills to assist at basketball festivals. 22

23 FCT Coach Education Programme Date 12th to 16th February am 5pm Falkirk High School TBC Contact info The long weekend will offer a variety of course, including First Aid, Child Protection, Working with Disabilities and Sport Specific CPD s. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable qualification to develop your coaching skills and portfolio.
