1 Setting up a Wireless Router Please note that BCL do not support setting up wireless networks, as part of the standard Internet fee. 2 Plugging in your Router A router whether The cable that goes into the Wall to get internet will be labelled, Internet or WAN. Any devices you plug in to your router will plug into the LAN (Local Area Network) port. WAN = Internet in LAN = Internet to computer Important! Where possible you should plug your computer in rather than relying on wireless. The more wireless networks that overlap, the slower your wireless will be. 2

3 To find the router address Windows Hold the Windows key, and push R this will open the Run Window (image right). In run, type cmd and click ok. This will open the command prompt window, here type ipconfig and then hit enter. Make sure you are currently plugged into the router using one of the LAN ports. In the returned information you want to find the information for your Ethernet network adapter. Here you will find your default gateway address which when entered into your web browser will take you to a page where you can configure your router. 3

4 To find the router address Mac Reminder this process is different for Apple Airports and Time Capsules. Wireless Router Setup Click on the network icon (which always looks like the wireless symbol) and click on Open Network Preferences. Now type that address into your web browser in the case of the above and connect to your router. 4

5 Configuring the Router The default logon will be something obvious. The username most likely being admin or administrator. If leaving the password field blank does not work, try password or admin, the more common combination being; U: admin P: admin Once logged in look for an Internet or WAN section under setup, it may be a separate page in the navigation bar. This guide uses a Linksys WRT54GL router. In this instance, the IP address goes under setup. You want to use a Static IP address and then specify below, the highlighted section in the below image indicates the portion of the settings that will differ based on your building and floor. If you are unsure of what your IP settings should be, call Network Support on extension 6664 Your IP address will not be exactly the same as the below image. 5

6 Next click on the wireless tab, this may be displayed as wireless settings or wireless setup. In the Wireless tab, under basic settings, you can pick the SSID which is the name you will look for when connecting to the wireless network. Next find the security section; this may simply be a matter of scrolling down, here you enter the password you would use to connect to your wireless network. 6

7 Apple AirPort/TimeCapsule Wireless Router Setup To configure a static IP address you will need to go through the AirPort Utility. Open Finder In Finder, go to Applications, and then the Utilities folder. Here you will find AirPort Utility. In Airport Utility your AirPort should appear. Click on the icon, and a bubble will appear, here you can click Edit, which will open up a window where you can configure your router. Firstly on the Internet Tab Set Connect Using to Static and then enter your IP address, if you do not know your IP settings call Network Support at

8 On the Wireless Tab you set your Network Name (SSID) and a Password Wireless Router Setup On the Network Tab make sure the Router Mode is set to DHCP and NAT Click Apply and go back to the main Airport Utility screen. Here in the bubble you will see an error for Double NAT, click on the error and then select Ignore from the menu. This error is because most devices will by default want to have an IP address assigned automatically which is not the case for most floors on the BCL Network. 8
