1 Configuring Apple Time Capsule for Safe Use at Syracuse University October 15, 2008 The Apple Time Capsule serves as a wired and wireless internet router with a hard drive for network attached storage. Despite being a very useful device, using the Time Capsule wirelessly on the SU campus causes harm to the campus wireless network. Radio signals from the Time Capsule interfere with the radio signals for AirOrangeX, and this in turn can affect the performance of AirOrangeX for all wireless users in the area. Wireless clients will experience a slower connection, or sometimes they may even be blocked from access completely. The more Time Capsules that are in a single area, the worse the effect becomes. Even if the Time Capsule is not used as a wireless router, the device has its wireless radio turned on by default and becomes an interfering radio device. For this reason, it is required that students disable the wireless capabilities of the device and connect to their device using a wired Ethernet cable. The following steps show how to turn off wireless for a Time Capsule. There are two sets of instructions: A. Configuring a new Time Capsule B. Re configuring a Time Capsule already in Use for SU Campus Use A. Configuring a new Time Capsule: NOTE: Make sure that you have first installed the Airport Utility (supplied in box with Time Capsule) on your computer before proceeding, and that your Time Capsule is plugged in and powered on. 1) When you open the Airport Utility, it scans for devices wirelessly. The Time Capsule s radio is enabled by default, and therefore it should be detected as shown in the figure below. Select that device and press continue.

2 2) If you are already connected to another wireless network, it will ask you if you want to switch networks. Press OK to switch networks so that you can configure the Time Capsule. 3) Give your Time Capsule a name to identify it. You should type in a user name and strong password to restrict access to it. Configure the other options as convenient for you.

3 4) When prompted for how you want to connect to you Time Capsule, select I want to connect Time Capsule to my computer or network using Ethernet, and press Continue. 5) You will get a summary of the final settings to be applied on the Time Capsule. After you have reviewed and decided they re correct, press the Update button.

4 6) You will get a warning message that the device will be temporarily unavailable in order to apply the new settings. Click on the Continue button to apply the settings. With that, your brand new Time Capsule is safe to use on the SU Campus, and you can use it by connecting through your wired Ethernet cable. B. Re configuring a Time Capsule already in Use for SU Campus Use: If you are already using your Time Capsule as a wireless router, whether connected to the campus network or not, you are in violation of campus computing policy and will need to turn the wireless mode off as follows:

5 1) First you must join the wireless network that you set up on your capsule by going through the list of available wireless networks in Windows and selecting it. 2) Alternatively you can directly connect through a wired Ethernet cable. After you have connected, open the Airport Utility. Your device will show up. Select you device for configuration and press Continue.

6 3) As you go through the configuration options, once you reach the prompt on how you want to connect to your device, select I want to connect Time Capsule to my computer using Ethernet, and press Continue.

7 4) When you reach the final window showing summary of settings to be applied, press on Update.

8 5) You will get a warning message that the device will be temporarily unavailable in order to apply the new settings. Click on the Continue button to apply the settings. Now you can use your Time Capsule safely in the SU Campus, and you can access it by connecting through your wired Ethernet cable.
