2 Earthqake Earthqake is a natral phenomenon that often strikes or contry as well as contries all over the world. Get informed and plan together with yor Personal Spport Network in order to be prepared to confront a possible earthqake. When yo are aware, of what yo shold do and which are yor possible needs before, dring and after an earthqake, yo will feel safe and yo will act calmly, promptly and effectively, in case of an emergency. Personal Spport Network It is a network consisted of at least 3 persons that the individal can absoltely trst. The prpose of the network is to spport people in case of an emergency, sch as earthqake. Members of the network can be persons from his familiar environment (family, friends or workplace), where the individal sally spends a lot of time. 3 Before an earthqake 1. Be informed abot: the earthqake as well as the seismicity of yor region, the self - protection measres before, dring and after an earthqake according to yor needs and yor everyday life environment, the special assistance programs for people with mobility impairment held in yor mnicipality or other athorities. Create yor Personal Spport Network Choose at least 3 persons, yo absoltely trst, which will help yo firstly to be prepared for the cases of a seismic emergency and secondly to confront them effectively. Select the persons for yor network from yor familiar environment (family, friendly, professional) or from places where yo spend a lot of time and will spport yo promptly if needed, after the earthqake. Notify them abot yor needs. 3

Discss with yor Personal Spport Network abot: what yo shold do in order to protect yorself in a case of an earthqake, the safest places in each space, the list of important emergency phone nmbers in a case of an emergency (e.g. 112 Eropean Emergency Nmber that operates in Greece). Pt the list at an accessible place, special mobility eqipment (walking sticks, crtches, walkers) or yor wheelchair, yor medication procedres, as well as mechanical eqipment covering height differences like: ramps, chair elevator, platform lift etc., yor reglarly commnication ways in order to inform each other abot yor daily schedles, as well as the time periods that someone will be away from the city. 4. Plan with yor Personal Spport Network from now Yo mst be prepared that none may be with yo when an earthqake occrs so cooperate in order to: identify potential hazards and try to redce them. Secre properly heavy frnitre, light fixtres, ceiling fans etc. Place heavy and fragile objects on lower shelves. Avoid to hang heavy objects over places where yo sit or sleep. Point ot and repair any possible damage in the bilding as cracks, hmidity, 4

5 prepare a disaster spply kit containing items sch as battery operated radio, first aid kit, fire extingisher, flashlight, medicines which yo might possibly need, walking aids etc., be sre that the evacation rotes of the bilding are easily accessible, in a case of an evacation. Yo mst define the evacation process after an earthqake withot sing a lift. Proper reformations of the bilding are necessary in order to ameliorate the accessibility of the exits, decide how yo and yor spport network will commnicate and locate the place to meet after the eartqake stops. Yo mst agree that if yo are alone inside the bilding dring the earthqake and be able to evacate it, yo will do it. If yo need spport, someone mst help yo evacate the bilding. In case yo are nable to get ot, contact the fire brigade immediately, preselect the nearest, safe place where yo will resort to after an earthqake (eg park or sqare). Agree that yo and the members of yor personal spport network will meet there, decide abot the most appropriate rote for the meeting shelter and the means of transport that yo will se, take advantage of the Mnicipality s or other Instittional Bodies transportation Programs. elaborate together on alternative scenarios in case the earthqake alters the first plan and decide for example, for an alternative meeting place. 5. Take part in earthqake drills Organize earthqake drills at home or in yor workplace, with the members of yor spport network in order to improve yor skills. Drills will encorage yo to feel confident and to remove yor insecrities concerning the emergency, as well as help yo stay calm in a real case. 5

6 Protection Measres dring an earthqake Remain calm. Protect yorself. If yo se a wheelchair or walking aids (sholder bacteria, sticks, crtches, walkers, etc.): Stay where yo are, as far as possible from hazards. Lock immediately the brake of yor wheelchair or of the walking aids yo se if it has wheels. If yo are seated, croch towards yor knees as mch as possible and cover yor head and yor back neck with yor arms. Stay at this position ntil the shaking stops. If yo are otdoors, stay there and move away from bildings facades and other dangeros spots. 6

7 After an Earthqake Yo have to know that aftershocks may follow the main shock. Stay calm and apply yor emergency plan. If yo are at the same place with a member of yor Personal Spport Network: call the member of yor Personal Spport Network, be sre that yo have taken with yo yor disaster spply kit which yo have already prepared, learn if the way of evacation rotes has been checked for any risks (eg. fallen plasters or broken panes), ask from the member of yor Personal Spport Network to help yo in order to exit careflly from the bilding, as yo did in earthqake drills. If yo are nable to evacate the bilding call immediately the emergency services, follow the member of yor Personal Spport Network to the open, safe place yo have predetermined, condct the rest members of yor Personal Spport Network, stay calm when aftershocks follow the main shock and follow yo emergency plan wherever yo are, get gidelines only by competent athorities. If yo are not at the same place with a member of yor Personal Spport Network: take with yo yor disaster spply kit, which yo have already prepared, and careflly evacate the bilding if yo are able to do it by yorself. Otherwise, ask from people who are close to yo, to help yo or call immediately the emergency services, if yo have evacated the bilding by yorself go careflly to the open, safe place yo have predetermined and condct a member of yor Personal Spport Network. Otherwise, if yo need help, ask from people who are close to yo to help yo, stay calm when aftershocks follow the main shock and follow yor emergency plan wherever yo are, get gidelines only by competent athorities. 7

Ιf yo want to help a person with mobility impairments of yor social circly to prepare for the earthqake and to act appropriately after an earthqake become a member of his Personal Spport Network. Personal Spport Network It is a network consisted of at least 3 persons that the individal can absoltely trst. The prpose of the network is to spport people in case of an emergency, sch as earthqake. Members of the network can be persons from his familiar environment (family, friends or workplace), where the individal sally spends a lot of time. Be informed abot: the earthqake as well as the seismicity of yor region, the self - protection measres, for people with mobility impairments before, dring and after an earthqake, the needs of the person with mobility impairments, the existing special assistance Seismic Hazard Map of Greece [Sorce: E.P.P.O.] programs for people with mobility impairment held in yor mnicipality. 2. Discss with the person with mobility impairments abot: what he shold do to protect himself in a case of an earthqake, the safest places in each space, the list of important emergency phone nmbers, the card with his personal information which he shold always carry with him, the members of the personal spport network who will help him in a case of an earthqake when he is at home, at work or wherever he spends a lot of time, the commnication between the members of the personal spport network, at reglar intervals, in order to inform Seismic activity of Greece [Sorce: E.P.P.O.] each other abot their daily schedles, as well as the time periods that they will be away from the city. 3

12 3. Plan ahead with the person with mobility impairments and the others members of the personal spport network in case of an earthqake. Collaborate in order to: identify potential hazards and try to redce them. Secre properly heavy frnitre, light fixtres, ceiling fans etc. Place heavy and fragile objects on lower shelves. Avoid to hang heavy objects over places where the person with mobility impairments sits or sleeps. Point ot and repair any possible damage in his bilding, prepare a disaster spply kit containing items sch as keys of his hose, battery operated radio, first aid kit, fire extingisher, flashlight, medicines which he might possibly need, walking aids etc, decide how yo, the person with mobility impairments and the others members of the personal spport network will commnicate and locate the place to meet after the earthqake stops. 13 preselect the nearest, safe place where yo will resort to after an earthqake (meeting areas and shelters), decide abot the most appropriate rote for the meeting place and the means of transport that will be sed by the person with mobility impairments, be sre that the evacation rotes of the bilding are easily accessible, in a case of an evacation and define the evacation process after an earthqake withot sing a lift, take advantage of the Mnicipality s transportation Programs. 4. Participate in earthqake drills, along with the person with mobility impairments and the other members of the personal spport network in order to improve yor skills. Meeting areas and shelters 5

14 Dring an earthqake The dration of an earthqake in or contry is jst a few seconds. We all know that each person experience the earthqake by himself. Remain calm and do not panic. First protect yorself, so that after the earthqake yo will be able to help others. Apply the appropriate protective measres according to the place yo are. If yo are indoors: stay where yo are and remain calm, drop to the floor, take cover nder a strdy frnitre (table, desk) and hold on. If there isn t any appropriate frnitre, move to the center of the room, croch to the floor and cover yor head and yor back neck with yor arms, stay away from large glass srfaces (windows, skylights, glass partitions) or frnitre and objects that cold topple over and hit yo. If yo are otdoors: stay ot, move away from bildings facades, streetlights, tility wires or other dangeros spots (as mch as possible), and protect yorself appropriatly. If yo are driving: redce the speed of yor car and pll over to the side of the road and stop in the nearest safe place. Avoid bildings facades, bridges, electrical wires, etc. Care not to obstrct the traffic. 6

15 After an Earthqake Yo have to know that aftershocks may follow after the main shock. Stay calm and apply yor emergency plan. If yo are at the same place with the person with the mobility impairments: look for him and make sre that he is okay, spport him so that he can stay calm, take with yo the disaster spply kit that the personal spport network have already prepared, check the evacation rotes for any risks (eg, fallen plasters or broken panes) and inform him abot them, help him evacate careflly the bilding with yo as yo did in earthqake drills. If yo are nable to evacate the bilding call immediately the emergency services, lead him to the open, safe place yo have predetermined, condct with the rest members of his personal spport network and inform them abot the sitation, help the person with the mobility impairment in whatever he needs, stay calm when aftershocks follow the main shock and follow yor emer gency plan wherever yo are, get gidelines only by competent athorities. If yo are not at the same place with the person with the mobility impairments: take with yo yor disaster spply kit, which yo have already prepared, and careflly evacate the bilding, contact him, approach the predetermined meeting point, stay calm when aftershocks follow the main shock and follow yor emergency plan wherever yo are, get gidelines only by competent athorities. In case of failre to meet the person with mobility impairments condct with the rest members of the spport network, and if necessary call immediately the emergency services. 7
