Success Center Directed Learning Activity (DLA) Essay Essentials 6: Revising, Editing and Proofreading W006.1

Directed Learning Activity Essay Essentials 5: Revising, Editing, and Proofreading Description: Now that you ve learned the strategies for putting together the rough draft of your essay, you will learn the differences between as well as how to prioritize these three separate processes for polishing it. Prior Knowledge: This Directed Learning Activity (DLA) assumes a working knowledge of the first steps in the writing process that allow a writer to produce a draft, namely reading the prompt and prewriting. If you haven t covered these important topics in class this semester, we recommend backtracking to the activities titled Starting Strategies 1: Reading the Prompt and Starting Strategies 3: Selecting Prewriting Techniques before tackling this fifth DLA in our Essay Essentials series. Materials: One envelope labeled Step Two and Attachments 1, 2, and 3 Step One: Understanding the Distinctions Between Revising, Editing, and Proofreading To revise literally means to see again. When it comes to writing, revision means to re-see your draft, re-think how well it works, and make big changes. By big changes, we mean changes that affect the overall paper s argument and organization. When you change the thesis, paragraph structure, introduction, or conclusion, you are making revisions. To edit means to make medium changes to your draft. Medium changes affect the paper at the sentence-level. When you repair sentence fragments, improve verb use, or fix run-on sentences, you are editing. To proofread means to make small changes. Small changes include correcting misspelled words, punctuation errors, and formatting bloopers (such as not using MLA or APA format if the paper requires it.) Generally, writers revise first, then edit, then proofread. This order is efficient because it sets priorities: first improve paragraphs, then sentences, then words. Step Two: Applying the Distinctions Remove the cards from the envelope entitled Step Two. Assemble the cards into three stacks: revising, editing, and proofreading. For example, one card says Correction of errors related to sentence boundaries. Are there sentence fragments? Are there run-on sentences? This card belongs in the editing stack, because it refers to medium-level changes on the sentencelevel. Now, it s your turn to sort the remaining cards.

How did you determine which cards went in which stack? Did you find any cards that you weren t sure about? Write your answer below. Step Three: Recognizing the Need for Revision, Editing, and Proofreading in Context Examine Attachment 1, featuring two versions of the paragraph entitled Big Box Stores Aren t So Bad. Determine which paragraph was mainly revised for big changes, and which paragraph was primarily edited and proofread for medium and small changes. Write down your answer below, as well as a sentence or two explaining your reasoning. Step Four: Analyzing Suggestions on a Student s Draft Read Attachment 2, featuring the draft of a student paper entitled Hooked on Credit Cards with notes in the margins added by the student s peer editor. Select a suggestion that refers to revising, one that refers to editing, and one that refers to proofreading. Write the peer editor s suggestion in the space below. Revising:

Editing: Proofreading: In what order would you address these three suggestions? For instance, would you start with the proofreading suggestions? Or something else? Write your answer and explain your reasoning below. Step Five: Evaluating a Complete Essay Read Attachment 3, featuring the final version of the student paper Hooked on Credit Cards. As you read, evaluate the paper s improvement by marking Yes or No for each category on the Revising, Proofreading, and Editing Checklist.

W006.1 Essay Essentials 6: Revising, Editing and Proofreading PRINT STUDENT NAME STUDENT # Tutor Feedback: The student answered all of the questions in complete sentences that demonstrate an understanding of the material. In Step Two, the student correctly sorted the cards into three categories. In Step Three, the student identified which paragraph was revised, and which was edited and proofread. Additional Comments: PRINT INSTRUCTOR/TUTOR NAME DATE INSTRUCTOR/TUTOR SIGNATURE STUDENT DO NOT FORGET TO TURN THIS SHEET IN AT THE FRONT DESK! You may not get credit for completing this DLA if you fail to leave this sheet with the front desk receptionist.
