2 2 Marketing on Twitter 101 Twitter has shown a lot of potential when it comes to the social networking. It has also proven to be an effective online marketing tool and has shown phenomenal results for many businesses in recent years. With its enormous user base, there is a lot of potential for you to tap into and use it to your advantage. In this e-guide, we will share with you 10 tips that can help you get twittering and making it work for your business!
3 3 1. It s all about sharing Twitter is all about conversation. Just surf Twitter and learn from the top execs. CEO of Zappos.com, Tony Hsieh, shares about what goes on in the Zappos office, amongst other things instead of hard-selling his product, and people are intrigued and interested, so they keep checking back to see what is new. Don t use Twitter to sell. Share about your company s corporate culture, your leadership values, your staff, your professional engagements or casual, seemingly frivolous activities that add character to your brand. Just as importantly, address your customers needs through Twitter. Let your customers know you re thinking about them. HTC addresses the individual needs of followers and replies them on Twitter. It s like a real conversation, except that it is taking place online instead of in person! You can tweet just about anything that will provide an insight to your business or your CEO at a more personal level. Adding a face to your brand will help strengthen your marketing! 2. Be real, be relevant You really do not want to be tweeting about what you are having for lunch every day. More than just being current, you have to make it relevant, meaningful and readable, so your followers look forward to your updates. Here s the tip. Every time you are posting something, ask yourself Is this anything I would be interested in? If your answer is no, it is likely that your followers are going to feel the same way. Don t just push out any information you have. Twitter is a fantastic tool to promote your content, undoubtedly, but underscoring that is the art of humanising your business, and making it interesting for the man on the street, so put in effort to make it worthwhile.
4 4 3. Don t spam Spamming is a big no-no in Twitterville, so no matter how tempting it might be, don t. By spamming, followers will stop reading your tweets or unsubscribe to them and you would have effectively lost your audience. Now, that s a huge crime, no? 4. Optimise your tweets! If you haven t realised, major search engines have now started indexing Twitter, so it is important to optimise your content so people can find you.
5 5 The question here is how do you optimise your tweets? Have an optimal username A good username is relevant and easy to remember. More importantly, it creates a static address for future search indexing which will become part of your customised Twitter URL. As much as possible, try and keep it short for easy retweets. Take advantage of your Bio space Make the best of your Bio space. It is indexed, so make sure you have a description that is quintessential to your core business. Use keywords You may not always be able to do this, but when you can, use keywords as much as possible. Capitalise on buzz words where appropriate to convey your tweets without compromising on the value of your messages. 5. Grow your community There are many ways to grow your number of followers. Here are 3 tips that we find very useful: What goes around comes around Sarah Evans, director of communications at Elgin Community College (ECC) in Elgin, Illinois, shares, Twitter is all about karma. The more good you put out there, the more you receive. When you find others with great information, don t be shy in sharing with your community. It s a great feeling when you promote one of your followers (instead of yourself) and it results in dialogue among your community. It ultimately reflects support for you and credibility for your follower. To begin, make it a point to retweet 5 followers tweets. Get connected, be connected and stay connected. Know your audience Find out who follows you. Read their bios, so you can learn how best to engage them in a conversation. You can gain a loyal following by being interested.
6 6 Let everyone know You never know who is on Twitter if you are not looking. Search for people to follow and add your Twitter ID to your business cards, signatures, website, blog and other social media networks. Put yourself out there so people will know you re tweeting! 6. Multiply em tweets Understand and utilise the power of retweets. This is viral at its best, and can be extremely useful. If today, I its link will reappear on my Twitter to my followers who may not have seen RecipeGeek s tweet, and a ripple effect would have been created, sending the message to a new audience. As a result, create good tweets worth retweeting with awesome content, so people will want to spread the word around! 7. What are they saying? Twitter Search your competitors, your company s name, and general information about your business and industry. Check out the ongoing conversations people have about you, and gather feedback. It s always good to know what s happening on the ground. Bad Feedback Good feedback
7 7 8. Link up Twitter is a great channel to inform your followers of new products, promotions or events that you are having. It helps to make them feel included. If you ve just released a new product, get your customers on Twitter to tweet their comments and feedback on how you can do better. Add links to your website, blog entries or press releases in your tweets to drive more people to your website. It could well be a potential customer. 9. Employ a strategy This is not rocket science. We all know that having a strategy is important, so get down to developing one and implementing it. Ogilvy's 360 Degree Digital Influence group developed a strategic approach for organisations which are using Twitter to connect with their audience. It provides excellent insight if you are not sure where to begin.
8 8 10. All in good measure If you cannot measure it, you will not know how well you are really doing. To ensure you are not wasting your efforts on Twitter, it is critical to measure the results and evaluate your campaign effectiveness. Here are some simple metrics that will get you started: Follower count This is straightforward. The more followers you have, the larger your audience. Frequency Measure your retweets and assess your influence based on your ability to initiate viral messages on Twitter. The more highly retweeted you are, the better it is for you.
9 9 Engagement Do a Twitter search using Find out if your audience is responding to your message. The level of engagement they have with you suggests how influential you are and how valuable your content is. Google Analytics Google Analytics is a robust and powerful tool that provides rich insight, so if you re not on it, get on it and start measuring how much traffic is coming from Twitter, and find out how effective your campaign is.
