2 Why is it important? Equality To live in a fair, just and integrated society, where diversity is valued and all can participate to fulfil their potential. Everyone has an equal chance to live free from fear, discrimination and prejudice. Diversity Its what makes people different

4 Protected Characteristics Equality Act 2010 encourages us to do what is right. Names 9 characteristics: Age, Disability, Gender, Gender Reassignment, Marriage & Civil Partnership, Pregnancy & Maternity, Race, Religion & Belief and Sexual Orientation Additional groups: Carers Human Rights

5 Human Rights Human Rights which link to healthcare: Article 2: Right to Life Article 3: Right not to be tortured or treated in an inhuman or degrading way Article 5: Right to Liberty Article 6: Right to a fair trial Article 8: Right to respect for private and family life, home and correspondence Article 14: Right not to be discriminated against in relation to any of the rights contained in the European Convention

6 Human Rights Why are they important? The Human Rights Act offers a practical tool to help support NHS organisations to put the individual at the heart of the decision making process and make decisions that better protect the interests of service users, staff and carers.

7 F.R.E.D.A A human rights-based approach to clinical practice: Fairness Respect Equality Dignity Autonomy

8 Military Covenant A framework for how the Armed Forces expect to be treated: Priority treatment for new referrals where condition linked to military service; Responsibility of patient to raise with clinician they think condition related to military service; Patient can be a veteran at the age of 16

9 General Duties Under the Equality Act the Public Sector Equality Duty expects all public organisations: To eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation To advance equality of opportunity for all To foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

10 Discrimination Direct someone has treated you less favourably than another person because of a protected characteristic Indirect A rule or policy that applies to everyone but disadvantages a particular individual or group

11 Discrimination Associative treating someone less favourably than others as a result of their association with a person who holds a protected characteristic Perceived unlawfully discrimination against someone on the mistaken assumption that they hold a protected characteristic

12 Basis of Discrimination Stereotype to make assumptions about a person on the basis of their age, sex, race, nationality, sexuality, disability etc Prejudice favouring or disfavouring an individual because of preconceived ideas relating to their age, sex, race, nationality, sexuality, disability etc

13 Your Responsibilities Co-operate with measures introduced to support equality Not to discriminate against others Encourage others NOT to discriminate Not to harass, bully or abuse others To report evidence or suspicion of discrimination Not to victimise people who have complained/ provided information relating to discrimination

14 Challenge Prejudice and Discrimination Avoid blame say what would be better Think about the impact of your role and relationship with the individual Be clear about your position Consider when and where is best to challenge Think about the effect on others NOT challenging is not a neutral act it can be seen as collusion

15 Make a Difference Learn more about people who are different from you Recognise how your social and racial identity may impact on others Understand that treating people fairly may not mean treating everyone the same Treat everyone with respect Don t stereotype Avoid disrespectful language
