PHD DISSERTATION (BOOK MANUSCRIPT) TITLE: Activism and Political Participation Among People of Migrant Background: Discourses and Practices of Inclusiveness in Four Italian Cities My Ph.D. dissertation addresses key questions concerning the role of alliances between activists of immigrant background and non-state actors, and the way in which these alliances shape the participation of immigrants and ethnic minorities in a hostile Italian national context. Because cities are where de facto incorporation takes place, my study compares four cities with different political orientations and configurations of power in Northern Italy, in the period between 1998 and I use a sociological perspective, and examine the interaction between non-state organizations and other actors within a large political spectrum. I ask two research questions: What accounts for differences in forms of civic and political participation at the local level by activists of migrant background? How do these activists perceive and act upon the opportunities for participation offered to them? Based on extensive fieldwork in Italy in 2013 and 2014, including nearly 120 in-depth interviews (65 with activists of migrant background), 3
4 archival research, and participant observation of more than 80 key events and meetings, the study examines diverging and converging trajectories of individual and collective participation (in both conventional and non-conventional channels) by non-european immigrants in Italy. 10 European University Institute, Florence, Italy Academy of Global Governance Intensive Executive Training Seminar: Cultural Diversity: Advantage or Liability? Jun 2013 EXPERIENCE AS CONSULTANT WITH CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS I have considerable experience working with grassroots organizations and stakeholders in Italy and Canada. In 2013 and 2014, I was involved with civil society organizations that work in favor of immigrants and refugees rights. I helped organize social mobilization events with grassroots movements, gave consultations, and organized training activities with community organizers as well as trade unions and church-based organizations on how to promote innovative approaches to grassroots advocacy in a multi-ethnic setting. During these trainings, I developed a dynamic approach to engaged learning by encouraging the audience to take part in discussions, simulate debates, and address critical sociological and political issues. These experiences, combined with my academic training, have taught me to be versatile, and to adapt my language to the needs of my audience, particularly when there are important linguistic and cultural divides. In Toronto, between 2014 and 2015, I took part in events related to the resettlement of refugees while also developing relationships with organizations that promote improved conditions for immigrants and refugees in Canada. Thanks to my work in these highly diverse settings, I have learned to adapt myself to different cultural contexts, to take responsibility, and to work effectively with stakeholders and grassroots organizations. I have developed strong coordination skills and the ability to build collegial team environments in multicultural organizations.
