2 Page 2 I. COURSE DESCRIPTION This is an overview study of the entire New Testament. The background and purpose of each book will be taught, and a general outline of each book will be given to the student. The student will be able to identify the New Testament portion of Scripture that deals with a given subject. II. RATIONALE A. Philosophical 1. Students will be taught that the New Testament and Jesus perfectly complete the Old Testament. 2. Students will be taught a unity between the Old and New Testaments on the basis of one Author, the Holy Spirit ( The Old Testament is the New [testament] concealed; and the New Testament is the Old [testament] revealed. ). 3. Students will be taught that God s purpose is revealed in the Old Testament which continues in the New Testament comprising a theme for the entire Bible God s glory. B. Practical Students must possess a thorough knowledge of God s complete revelation the Bible. It is through God s Word that He reveals His character, His will for believers, His love for Israel, His desire to seek the lost, and His desire for fellowship. This knowledge and the application of it, is necessary for the personal growth of students as well as essential to their responsibility of teaching the unity of the Bible to others. Old Testament Survey and New Testament Survey serve as the foundation upon which the rest of the academic Bible courses are built. III. PREREQUISITES None IV. TEXTBOOKS The Bible (King James Version). NOTE: The standard Bible version authorized by BSWE for all Scripture memory work, study, assigned reading, and public reading, is the (Old) King James Version. To maximize participation and facilitate classroom discussion, please bring an (Old) King James Version of the Bible to class. Machen, J. Gresham. 3 Page 3 V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Academic Regulations 1. Students will read at least ten (8) chapters per day for seventy-eight (98) consecutive days to complete the entire New Testament (780 chapters in the New Testament). NOTE: FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE NEW TESTAMENT READING ON TIME WILL AUTOMATICALLY KEEP THE STUDENT FROM RECEIVING A PASSING GRADE, REGARDLESS OF HIS/HER GRADE AVERAGE. 2. Students will memorize and write on quizzes and tests, key verses that deal with the Great Commission, the Gospel, the Church, Christian liberty, and Christ (see item VII, Course Outline for due dates): a. Matthew 28:18-20 b. Mark 10:45 c. Acts 1:8 d. Romans 1:16, 17 e. Galatians 5:1 f. Colossians 1:18 g. 1 Timothy 3:15 h. 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 i. Hebrews 4:14 3. Students will read the textbook by Machen and have regularly scheduled content quizzes over the assigned reading. While most quizzes and tests are identified by date in the Course Outline section of this syllabus; some will be announced by the instructor. 4. Students will memorize a list of each of the following: a. The books and major divisions of the New Testament b. The twelve Apostles and their brief description c. The Roman Emperors and their brief description d. The Herodian dynasty as mentioned in Scripture e. The themes and dates of the books of the New Testament 5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of all the above material on the final exam. 6. Students must turn in all work either early or on-time. No assignments (e.g., papers projects, and reading assignments) will be accepted late (i.e., Late equals a grade of 0. ). B. Attendance policies 1. A maximum of six (6) absences will be allowed for any reason with the exception of administrative absences. Any student missing more than six (6) classes will receive an F.

4 Page 4 2. If a student is more than ten (10) minutes late to a class or leaves more than ten (10) minutes early, he/she will be counted absent. 3. Three (3) tardies will constitute an absence and will detract from the total allowable absences. 4. If a student arrives to class after attendance has already been recorded, he/she must speak to the instructor immediately following the class in order to verify his/her attendance was properly recorded. Attendance records will not be changed retroactively. C. Test Make-up Policies 1. Make-up quizzes will only be permitted if the absence is excusable (sickness, death in the family, jury duty, or an emergency). 2. A note must be given to the teacher immediately upon returning to class stating the nature of the absence. 3. All make-up quizzes must be scheduled the day of returning to class and completed within one (1) week of the absence. 4. Please come to Brother Smyth s office to make up quizzes. 5. Make-up tests will not be given. 6. No major exams (i.e., mid-term or final exams) will be taken unless the absence results from extenuating circumstances which are approved by the administration. VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES A. Cognitive 1. Students will acquire a foundational knowledge of the New Testament with special emphases in the following areas: a. Background of the New Testament b. Authors of New Testament books c. Major doctrines of Scripture d. Harmony of the Gospels e. Pentecost f. Church order g. Significance of Pauline Epistles h. Paul s Missionary Journeys i. Hebrews j. James (faith and works) k. Revelation l. Interpretational methods m. Christ (as the theme of the New Testament revealed)

5 Page 5 2. Students will learn the authorship, purpose, and broad outline of each New Testament book. 3. Students will discover the key passages, persons, and events of the New Testament. 4. Students will be able to identify on a map the major bodies of water and geographical regions pertaining to the New Testament. 5. Students will be able to list the major divisions of the New Testament and list which books pertain to each division. B. Affective 1. Students will develop a dependence on reading the Bible on a daily basis. 2. Students will develop an understanding of God s leading in the lives of New Testament characters and how He still leads today by biblical principles. 3. Students will develop a desire to make decisions in their lives based on the criteria from Scripture emphasized in class discussions. 4. Lecture and discussion will be employed in class sessions. B. Memory, discovery, and writing methods will be used by students to acquire and assimilate biblical information. IX. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING A. All assignments, projects, quizzes and exams will be given a point value. The total points possible and the total points earned will be used to determine the numeric average. Grades will be calculated from the following components: 1. New Testament Reading 20% 2. Memory Verses 15% 3. Text Quizzes - 15% 4. Mid-Term Exam - 25% 5. Final Exam 25%
