1 Uskudar American Academy Mathematics Department All UAA students are required to complete five years of a traditional, and very challenging, math curriculum including College-level Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus and Discrete Mathematics. Elective courses in Analytic Geometry, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, Advanced Geometry and Mathematics for Turkish University Exam Preparation are also offered. All subject matter is taught in English. In all courses, homework is assigned, both online and worksheets. The department is committed to current instructional technology such as smartboard and graphing calculators (TI 84+ and TI Nspire). The common homework, quizzes and exams ensure all students obtain consistent opportunities to excel. The department offers many additional opportunites to challenge the students prowess through a very active Math Club that offers international and national math competitions. UAA graduates have a tradition of excellent test results on mathematics scores for the Turkish Universities Entrance Exams; the AP Calculus Exams and the SAT Math Exam. The Mathematics program at UAA stresses understanding. Our aim is to develop analytical thinking skills. Our students develop these skills by the use of technology, by investigation and by questioning. Our students explore mathematics with technology mostly through the use of graphing calculators. This allows for visual representation of the topics studied algebraically. Outside of the classroom our teachers offer extra help. Every teacher in the Math department offers an office hour during the lunch hour once a week. This allows for a math teacher to be available during every week day lunch hour for students with inquiries or for students having difficulty with a particular homework or topic.
2 PREP MATH - Prep required course (2 hours) Prep Math is the introductory course of mathematics for incoming UAA students. The main objectives of the course are to learn or review the English vocabulary related to mathematics as well as to review and extend the math topics learned in elementary school. The course accommodates to students with a wide continuum of English language skills, from the beginner to the advanced. Students will be introduced to the graphing calculator. Assessments are based on class participation and completion of homework, projects, quizzes and exams. Assessment questions will include use of correct oral and written English mathematical terminology as well as algebra. MATH & GEOMETRY 9 (ALGEBRA 2 & GEOMETRY) - Grade 9 required course (6 hours) Math & Geometry 9 (Algebra 2 & Geometry) is a 6-period per week required course that consists of the following topics: sets of numbers; algebraic expressions; single variable equations and inequalities; introduction to functions; the number line; the coordinate plane; the midpoint and distance formulas; linear functions and their graphs; systems of linear equations and inequalities; absolute value; polynomials and factoring; exponents and radicals; complex numbers; quadratic equations; sets; modular systems; word problems; angles formed with parallel lines and a transversal; angles in a triangle; triangle inequality; polygons; congruent triangles; special triangles; and angles in quadrilaterals. Graphing calculators are used throughout the course. The emphasis is on students developing mathematical skills by analyzing, solving and explaining graphs and problems. Students are encouraged to explain each step logically and in English. Assessments are based on class participation and completion of homework and worksheets, quizzes and exams. Assessment questions will include application of theorems and properties, proofs, use of correct English mathematical and geometrical terminology, and understanding and accurate drawing from a description. MATH & GEOMETRY 10 (PRE-CALCULUS & TRIGONOMETRY & GEOMETRY) Grade 10 required course (6 hours) Math & Geometry 10 is a 6-period per week required course consisting of the following topics: functions and modeling; polynomial functions; properties and graphs of functions; complex numbers; quadratic equations; quadratic functions; quadratic inequalities; graphing polynomial functions; piecewise and absolute value functions; trigonometric functions and equations; right triangle trigonometry; applications of trigonometric identities in geometry; trigonometric addition formulas; logarithms; sequences and series; mathematical induction; areas and volumes of solid figures.
3 MATH 11 (CALCULUS) - (4 hours) Math 11 is a 4-period per week required course. It consists of the following topics: limits; continuity; derivatives; integrals. The graphing calculator is used throughout the course especially in mastering the topic of derivatives of functions, their graphs and in investigating the limits. The students are expected to be able to reason, justify, analyze, think critically, explain problems in English and use technology in different ways by the end of the course. MATH 11 (AP CALCULUS AB) Grade 11 (4 hours) Textbook: Calculus by Finney, Demana and Waits AP Calculus AB is a 4 period course in grade 11. The students who choose this course will not take the required grade 11 math course. Students can choose this course if they have at least a math average of 85% at the end of the first term of grade 10. ÜAA has an approved AP Calculus AB curriculum, and it is in this course that this program will now be offered. Limits, derivatives, and integrals will be the the main topics of this course. Students with a strong interest in mathematics are encouraged to enter the AP Calculus AB exam in May. Most universities in the USA accept high AP results in lieu of taking the Introductory Calculus course. This course is also essential for students entering the Sayısal portion of the LYS as well as for any student who will be continuing with any mathematics course in university. AP STATISTICS Grade 11 elective course (3 hours) AP Statistics is an elective course that can be taken in grade 11 or 12 but not both. This course includes all of the topics on the official AP Statistics course, including developing strategies for collecting, organizing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students will learn how to design, administer, and tabulate results from surveys and experiments, probability and simulations will aid students in constructing models for chance phenomena, and the understanding of sampling distributions will provide the logical structure for confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. To develop effective statistical communication skills, students are required to prepare frequent written and oral analyses of real data. Students are encouraged to take the AP Statistics Exam in May in order to get the one semester of an introductory college statistics course.
4 GEOMETRY 11 Grade 11 required course (3 hours) Geometry 11 is a 3-period per week required course. The emphasis of this course is on students strengthening their deductive reasoning skills through the derivation of relationships within polygons and circles as well as by proving geometric theorems and properties. Students will apply Euclidean geometry in problem solving situations as well as reflect upon the connections that can be drawn within geometry. The year begins with a quick review of the basic building blocks of Euclidean Geometry before progressing on to the postulates, definitions, properties and theorems connected with similarity, congruence, polygons, circles, areas, and three dimensional shapes. ANALYTIC GEOMETRY Grade 11 elective course (3 hours) Analytic Geometry is a three hour elective that can be taken in either grade 11 or grade 12 but not both. Analytic Geometry examines the properties and theorems of geometry on the Cartesian coordinate plane. The major topics are drawn from linear, circular analytic geometry, conics and vectors as that are included in both the YGS and LYS exams as well as needed for a fuller understanding of mathematics. Even though many of these topics are already included in the normal ÜAA math and geometry syllabi, this course will review, integrate and apply learnings in some new areas. For this reason Analytic Geometry is strongly recommended for students entering the Turkish university exam system as well as for students who have a love of mathematics. Assessments are based on class participation and completion of homework, quizzes and exams. Assessment questions will include application of theorems and properties. MATH 12 (Discrete Mathematics) Grade 12 required course (4 hours) This course is required mathematics course for grade 12 students. The main topics of this course are: logic; combinatorics; conics; vectors; space geometry. This course is essential for students entering the Sayısal portion of the LYS as well as for any student who will be continuing with any mathematics course in university. AP CALCULUS BC Grade 12 elective course (4 hours) Textbook: Calculus by Finney, Demana and Waits AP Calculus BC is a 4 period course in grade 12. Students can choose this course if they have at least a math (regular or AP) average of 85% at the end of the first term of grade 11. UAA has an approved AP Calculus BC curriculum and in this course this program will now be offered. After the revision of AP Calculus AB topics, the following topics will be covered in this course: Sequences,Infinite Series, Parametric, Vector and Polar Functions.
5 GEOMETRY 12 Grade 12 elective course (2 hours) Geometry 12 is a two period elective in grade 12. After reviewing the grade 11 geometry topics, students will work on three dimensional geometry and vectors. In this course, the students will master the geometry topics needed for the YGS and LYS. Students who want to improve their geometry skills are encouraged to take this course. YGS MATHEMATICS 12 Grade 12 elective course (4 hours) YGS mathematics 12 is a four period elective in grade 12. This is a course where all YGS math topics which are covered in previous years, will be reviewed. In this course, the students will master the math topics needed for the YGS. After the YGS math topics are finished, the students review the LYS math topics and solve different questions. Students who want to review YGS and some LYS math topics are encouraged to take this course.
