4 Where there s a will, there is a (rail-)road Domodossola-Brig: the modal split in the regional traffic is 90%, because the tunnel (18 km) favors the train In addition there are car-shuttle-trains for autos and vans The operating and financial responsability are in hand of Swiss Railways Raises the question of continuing with regional trains in Italy! 7 8 4

6 11 A good project is in the pipeline...: the extension of the FLP to Italy... daily queues at the border of Ponte Tresa From Ponte Tresa to Lugano there is a train every 15 minutes. Talks are on-going for extending the line to the center of Lugano Before the 2nd World War the Italian train was going to Varese and Luino... The project of 1995 provides an extension of the line through a bridge up in Italy - with parking... and the hope of seeing a tramway to... SWITZERLAND ITALY 12 6

7 Stabio: the new line linking Ticino, the Comasco, the Varesotto with the Sempione line directly with the airport of Malpensa This missing connection will be inaugurated in Between Lugano and Varese modalsplit is below 2%. From 2014 to rise up to 20%... The idea of the new line was materialized in The contract state between Italy and Switzerland was signed in Financial commitment: Switzerland CHF 134 millions, Italy EUR 223 millions With only 17.7 km of new tracks (CH: 6,5, IT: 11.2 km) this can offer an S-Bahn service into 4 major directions 13 4 new important links 14 7

8 The forecast of increase of public transport (benchmark: Tilo has increased alone in 2008 its customer base by 19%) 15 Chiasso: the first steps... For 120 years every train had to stop at least 18 minutes at Chiasso station The TILO project was the first hope of a cross-border company The first step a year ago: TILO trains travelling to Albate Camerlata / Comasco region The idea was to have a good quality service even in the south 16 8

9 17 Unfortunately, the impetus to offer comfortable trains at a fair price, reliable and fast, is gone... Swiss competition among the many different rail companies have always permitted a contest of ideas and a better quality between the companies - without having to organize expensive races and risk to be unsafe. 18 9

12 23 Tourists & commuters close to the glaciers The crossing points of Castasegna and Campocologno are the doors from Engadina/ St.Moritz towards the popolated Valtellina INTERREG Project From the Alps to the lakes without a car Tirano becomes a node of good connections / realizations of interchanges in Tirano Creating a new bus line Tirano-Edolo offers public transports on the Switzerland-Valcamonica UNESCO trail to Brescia Construction of the Mortirolo tunnel between Edolo and Tirano 24 12

13 25 Freight traffic on the Bernina Railway The majority of goods from and to Engadine uses "the train" - without the need for highways, the road remains free for individual traffic Freight wagons modern compositions with passenger trains, containers, tanks and tank-timber 26 13

14 Sta Maria Müstair: the door to Venosta 1. Up to five years ago the public transport was almost non existent - even on the Swiss part 2. With the constructions and new (great) rail and bus connections in Val Venosta: the travellers are back! 3. Not only Swiss citizens, but also more and more Italians, tourists and commutants UNESCO GranTour Recently it was founded a committee in favor of a tunnel from the Val Venosta in the Engadine: A railway tunnel of course
