Research & development WEGH Group has always attributed primary importance to Research & Development to which it allocates a substantial percentage of its turnover. Constantly striving to optimize this corporate function, we have built our ultra-modern WEGH Group Research & Development Centre in our La Spezia factory, in which all the Design, Prototyping, Verification and Validation activities take place. This is the centre dedicated to product engineering excellence. It is here, in fact, that all the technical, mechanical, electronic and electromechanical excellences are grouped for the common purpose of improving already existing products and devising new solutions to offer to the market. Being extremely results-oriented, WEGH Group has the capacity to produce equipment and high-performance systems with extremely high levels of reliability and maintainability, so as to be able to guarantee rapid returns on investments to its clientele and better running of the railway networks. 4
QUALITY AND EXPERIENCE Through the acqusition of the know-how of IPA division, the WEGH Group has more than fifty years experience in the engineering and construction of cutting-edge railway, tramway and underground railway superstructures and infrastructures. The collaboration with major universities and constant improvement in product quality and performance have led the company to develop innovative prefabricated, pre-stressed platform systems, a solution which is becoming increasingly popular and adopted around the world by companies which manage national railways. Quality certifications and the range of projects implemented bear witness to the company s professionalism, competencies and capacities in satisfying the demands of its customers, every time. 5
OUR EXPERTISE WEGH Group, with the experience of IPA division, is able to provide all-round support to its customers for: Engineering Production consulting and assistance for works execution construction and laying We guarantee our customers engineering projects based on concrete experience in the field and knowhow developed over time through the projects and partnerships implemented. Our engineering works are based on our extensive technical knowledge of products and applications and our consulting, management and assistance for the implementation of works are guaranteed by the successful projects we have managed to date. The solutions we provide aim to meet engineering needs, and thanks to the experience we have gained in the field, target the optimization of engineering resources. 6
The design parameters required for the detailed design derive from the technical specifications and from the sector legislation governing the subject and they define the constructional tolerances. The fundamental parameters used are geometrical, kinematic, architectural and vehicle-related. Subsequently, on the basis of the regulations and design parameters acquired, it is possible to define in detail the elements that normally constitute the executive design phase, e.g. route planimetries, typological planimetries, sections, altimetric profiles, finishing materials, bills of quantities etc. 7
railway track systems IPA division is a national leader in the production of, and in technical solutions for, state of the art rail systems. Through innovation processes and advanced technologies, it designs and produces railway superstructures - both traditional and latest generation and a remarkable variety of other infrastructural elements and components for the rail sector. A production system that is technologically advanced, together with quality controls and verifications both of the raw materials and of the finished products, combine to guarantee the reliability and prestige of the IPA division mark in the rail sector. Moreover, the company has a purpose-built structure designed to provide specialized laying services for railway works drawing on consolidated experience that continues to produce better and better results. 8 WG_railway_GIALLO.indd 8 13/08/
Today, thanks to the IPA division, WEGH Group is synonymous with excellence, quality and organization for the institutional and private market on a European scale. A Group in continuous evolution, dedicated to studying, researching and designing solutions able to meet the complex requirements of the market, paying particular attention also to technologies which provide concrete solutions to environmental problems. 9
SLAB TRACK STS SYSTEM Slab Track System is an innovative system made of prefabricated, prestressed, reinforced concrete slabs which are laid on a foundation thanks to the insertion of a special bedding slab injected in situ. Strengths: makes it possible to travel at high speeds, reducing noise and vibration levels guarantees shorter manufacturing and laying times allows road vehicles and pedestrians to transit on the railway line offers an expert, full time technical support service, from design through to laying considerably reduces maintenance costs, which are limited to routine cleaning of the surfaces and overhauling of the rails and the fasteners The STS system does not require traditional maintenance operations regarding: tamping of the ballast levelling cleaning renewal replacement of the ballast The system envisages a service life of the platforms, the bedding slab and the (optional), anti-vibration, elastomeric bed of at least 50 years. The superstructure maintenance plan simply consists of: the ten-year overhaul of the fasteners and weldings the replacement of the rails after 20 years The STS system is, therefore, a real turning point in terms of economic savings. 10
RAILWAY SLEEPERS AND SWITCH BEARERS SLEEPERS SWITCH BEARERS IPA division is the leading manufacturer in Italy of switch bearers. Since 1985, it has been designing and manufac-turing rail switch bearers of the types in use in the railway network and in compliance with the technical specifications and standards in force. The production process adopted, fruit of studies and experience gained over decades of production, is structured using prestressing technology with post-tensioned smooth wires anchored at the end by means of steel plates. The manufacturing plant is equipped with single moulds with 4 sections, fixed, around which the various processing phases are carried out: demoulding, preparation, casting, curing and demoulding once more. Once the components have completed the curing cycle and have been removed from the moulds, they proceed to the preparation, tensioning and finishing department which complete the production cycle. The materials, design and manufacturing technologies used by the IPA division for the production of prestressed concrete sleepers with smooth pre-tensioned and post-tensioned wires that are anchored at the ends, are subjected to the controls of the Quality Assurance department in order to check the compliance of the sleeper geometry with supply specifications and with the new European standards. 11
BRIDGES Within the Italian railway sector the innovation process has involved IPA division in the study and production of advanced solutions for railway bridges, through a series of technologically advanced solutions which respond perfectly and in a balanced manner, not only to mobility requirements, but also to the need to safeguard the environment. And indeed in terms of quality of transport and considerable reduction in noise and vibration pollution, IPA division p.r.c. bridges make it possible to almost totally reduce the vibrations and noise deriving from railway traffic without neglecting safety, while dedicating due attention to aesthetic aspects and to efforts not to create a nuisance. The use of prefabricated components and IPA division systems for high speed bridges and viaducts, road bridges, railway and underground lines, level crossings and road crossings make it possible to achieve: a considerable reduction in the dimensions and weight of the works (thanks to prestressing) a reduction in manufacturing times (replacement of a single span bridge overnight, avoiding excessive inconvenience due to the interruption of traffic) substantial savings on maintenance costs while obtaining a structure with high technological content great flexibility and adaptability to any use, from the replacement of ballast to the removal of the pre-existing decking with a reduction in thicknesses and an increase in height clearance versatility of use total reliability 12
NOISE BARRIERS IPA division has developed a cutting edge solution to efficiently resolve problems related to noise pollution. Special lightweight concrete panels are coupled with membrane devices based on the principle of sound wave interference, thereby avoiding the installation of unsightly barriers that would be seen by passengers and residents living along the railway route. The main elements of this system are: multiple-layer acoustic panel with an external layer made of concrete with expanded clay. Its characteristic surface roughness helps create a series of small intercommunicating sound chambers with high noiseabsorption capacities the Calmzone element which boosts the performance of the multi-layer panel thanks to its invisible screen It produces a refracted sound wave that overlays (destructive interference) the one emanated by the noise source, causing a significant reduction of railway noise, in the region of around 16 Db. The characteristics of the materials used to make IPA division s noise barriers give the system an almost unlimited service life, low maintenance cost and high selfcleaning properties. 13
