1 Introduction This document assumes the user already has experience using WindMil to edit models. 1.1 How to Use This Document This is not a comprehensive document on interacting with Switchgear in the Core E&O software products. This document is designed to give the reader an idea of how the Switchgear feature was designed to be used and what needs it meets. Introduction covers how to use this document and how the switchgear feature was designed including specific goals, non-goals, and symbology design. Switchgear Templates covers how to Switchgear Templates work, how to access, create, and edit Switchgear Templates, and how to import and export Switchgear Templates. Switchgear Elements covers how Switchgear Map Points work, how to interact with Switchgear elements, including connecting, disconnecting, rescaling, rotating, import and export, and searching. Switchgear Editor covers the Switchgear Tab, Equipment Tab, Connections Tab, and Outage Data Tab of the Switchgear Editor. Switchgear Settings covers the Switchgear Tab of the Display Options and the symbol size options for Switchgear. Switchgear in WindMilMap covers available Element Fields for Switchgear in WindMilMap. Switchgear in DisSPatch covers setting Outage Status updates for Switchgear in DisSPatch and reviewing Outage Data. Appendix A: Included Switchgear Templates lists available Switchgear Templates included with your copy of the software. Appendix B: SEQ File Layout describes how Switchgear Templates are described in SEQ files. Appendix C: SWG File Layout describes how Switchgear Map Points are described in SWG files. 1.2 Switchgear Feature Design The Switchgear feature within Core E&O has been designed from the beginning to meet a handful of specific customer needs. Instead of creating a new element type with its own set of attributes, we have chosen to create Switchgear as a special type of Map Point that stores references to existing elements for each of its cabinets. By doing this, we maintain the existing functionality of our model without requiring existing users to convert existing groups of elements into single special elements. This allows us to provide users with the ability to access the internal Switchgear elements from either the Switchgear Editor or the individual elements within the Section Editor without significant changes to our existing system Goals The Switchgear feature is designed specifically to assist users in modeling their padmounted Switchgear and underground multiway switches. Provide a quick way to add multiple switches and devices to the model. Provide a single access point for all devices and switches associated with padmounted Switchgear. Provide a single access point for dispatchers who are modifying the status of padmounted Switchgear. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 1

1.2.2 Non-Goals The first offering of our Switchgear feature lacks some things that we intend to add later. It also lacks some things we do not have a plan to add. Complex, custom Switchgear that contain more than twelve cabinets are not supported. Switchgear that contain elements other than switches or devices are not supported. 1.3 Symbology Design Switchgear symbols have been designed to resemble the schematic diagrams used by companies like S&C for their padmounted Switchgear products, as shown in Figure 1.1. Figure 1.1 An image of S&C s PMH-9 schematic from their website. Note that cabinets count clockwise from the bottom right and space is left in the middle to show the buses Template Symbol Design When designing new Switchgear Templates in the Equipment Database (EQDB), the schematic is drawn to resemble the S&C style in Figure 1.1 as closely as possible, as shown in Figure Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

Figure 1.2 The PMH-9 Switchgear Template as it is created within the EQDB in WindMil. Note that information about the highlighted cabinet is displayed at the bottom Map Point Symbol Design When applying the Switchgear Template to a Switchgear Map Point in WindMil, we maintained our goal of minimal changes to the existing WindMil modeling infrastructure. Underground lines were used to represent Switchgear buses. With this technique, we were able to arrange the elements of the Switchgear in a way to resemble the schematic as shown in Figure 1.3. Figure 1.3 The PMH-9 Switchgear as represented within WindMil. The blue border and shading is the Switchgear Map Point symbol. All the pink symbols are the elements associated with the Switchgear. They still draw the same as they have in the past. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 3

2 Switchgear Templates What you will learn in this section: How Switchgear Templates are used About Switchgear Templates supplied by Milsoft How to access, create, and edit Switchgear Templates How to import and export Switchgear Templates 2.1 Equipment vs. Templates Because the Switchgear Map Point feature is different than other Map Points, the equipment assignment for Switchgear is unique as well. Recall that in our normal equipment assignments, like transformer equipment, the equipment is referenced on the transformer. Any change made to the equipment within the EQDB ends up affecting all transformers. Switchgear equipment does not work that way. Switchgear equipment is used only when the Switchgear is added. After that, changes to the equipment do not affect existing Switchgear. In effect, we treat the Switchgear equipment like a template. This document will always refer to Switchgear equipment as Switchgear Templates. 2.2 Supplied Templates The Switchgear feature cannot model every Switchgear available on the market; it is designed only to model some. Given time, we will be able to model others. Available templates that come with WindMil are listed in Appendix A: Included Switchgear Templates. These templates are included in the SampleEQDB located, be default at C:/Milsoft/WindMil/SampleEQDB/eqdb. 2.3 Template Access To access the list of Switchgear Templates, choose EQDB Switchgear from the menu. This should display the Equipment Database (EQDB) Editor as shown in Figure 1.2. Selecting a Switchgear Template listed under S&C PMH PMH-9 within the tree view will display the existing PMH-9 Switchgear Template supplied with the SampleEQDB. 2.4 Template Creation To create a new Switchgear Template, click on the New button. You will be asked to name your template and to provide the number of cabinets as shown in Figure 2.1. Make sure you remember to type in your cabinet count. You cannot change the cabinet count once the Switchgear Template is created. Figure 2.1 The New Switchgear Template dialog that appears when creating a new Switchgear Template. A common mistake is forgetting to indicate the number of cabinets. When the Switchgear Template is first created, every cabinet will be set to a Switch Cabinet. If the Switchgear Template has an even number of cabinets, it will default to a Box Type Switchgear. If it has an odd number of cabinets, it will default to In Line Type Switchgear. The number of cabinets must be between two and twelve. 4 Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

2.5 Template Editing When you select a Switchgear Template, an interactive visual representation will be displayed on the right. Clicking on any cabinet will highlight the cabinet in light blue and show the cabinet type and equipment, if any is assigned on the bottom right. There are four cabinet types available: Empty No wires or elements at all. Bus Only Bus elements only. Switch Switch element in the middle. Device Device element in the middle and ability to assign Device Equipment Assigning Device Equipment Changing the cabinet type to Device will enable the Device Equipment fields. You can enter in the name of Device equipment manually by typing them in. You can also expand the Device sub-category in the left column and, while holding down the ALT key on the keyboard, drag a Device Equipment of your choice to each phase, as shown in Figure 2.2. Figure 2.2 Assigning Device Equipment to Device type cabinets can be accomplished in many ways. Notice the expanded Devices list at the top of the Switchgear Template list. 2.6 Template Import and Export Switchgear Templates can be imported and exported, just like other equipment to and from an SEQ file. The SEQ file changes for Switchgear are included in Appendix B: SEQ File Layout. In addition to using SEQ files, Switchgear Templates can be imported directly from other Equipment Databases using the Import button within the EQDB, as shown in Figure 2.3. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 5

Figure 2.3 Importing Switchgear Templates directly from a different Equipment Database (EQDB) can be easier, since it allows the user to view the differences and choose which to import directly. 6 Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

3 Switchgear Elements What you will learn in this section: How to add Switchgear to your model How to connect to and interact with Switchgear 3.1 Adding Switchgear To add Switchgear to the model: 1. First, click on the Add Switchgear button on the toolbar. It is a box containing the letters SG, as shown in Figure 3.1. Figure 3.1 The Add Element toolbar in WindMil. The Switchgear button is the boxed SG. 2. Next, click in the model window at the location at which you wish to add the Switchgear. 3. The Equipment Database (EQDB) Editor will appear showing the available Switchgear Templates. 4. Choose a template and click the OK button. Note: You can also do any creation of new Switchgear or editing of existing Switchgear at this point before clicking the OK button. 5. After you click the OK button, the Switchgear and all its elements will be added to the model. If you are zoomed in far enough, you should be able to see the Switchgear. Some examples are shown in Figure 3.2. Figure 3.2 On the left is a S&C PMH-9 Box Switchgear as shown after being added to the model. On the right is a G&W SF6 65F In Line Switchgear. Notice the attempt to draw the Switchgear symbol in the model similar to that seen in the EQDB and in schematics. 3.2 Connecting to Switchgear We made a few changes to editing to make connecting to Switchgear easier and to protect Switchgear from unnecessary changes Protections While the Switchgear is made up of existing elements, namely Underground Lines, Devices, and Switches, it is important that the user not be able to break Switchgear apart. For this reason, we protect some parts of Switchgear. It is not possible to connect to any part of a Switchgear other than the external lines from cabinets. It is not possible to disconnect any internal part of a Switchgear. Opening Switches and Devices is still acceptable. It is not possible to edit any data about the bus elements of a Switchgear which are all modeled as Underground Lines of Impedance Length 0.0. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 7

It is not possible to move any one part of a Switchgear without moving all of the elements. It is not possible to delete any one part of a Switchgear without deleting the entire Switchgear Cabinet Specification We enforce a specific cabinet assignment at the Switchgear level. If you try to connect a single line to the Switchgear, you will be asked which cabinet you wish to connect to. Selecting the cabinet will automatically connect your line to the correct external line of the cabinet, as demonstrated in Figure 3.3. Figure 3.3 When trying to connect to the PMH-9 Switchgear, you are offered a Specification dialog. Selecting Cabinet 3 in this case will connect to the external line element from Cabinet Auto-Connect We also improved the add element functionality. Previously, adding a line element from a source to another line would still require you to perform the correct connection: Connect, Change Feed, or Backfeed. For Switchgear, we made an exception. When you add a line from some source and end that line on a Switchgear cabinet external element, we connect it for you. This is demonstrated in Figure 3.4. Figure 3.4 The first image shows a Substation next to a Switchgear. The second shows adding a line from the Substation to the Switchgear. Notice in the third, the line is completely connected up. Previously, the line would have ended there but not connected. You would have had to do a Backfeed to connect. 3.3 Rescale and Rotate The Rotate tool located on the Edit Toolbar shown in Figure 3.5 can be used to both rescale and rotate Switchgear in the model. Figure 3.5 The Edit Toolbar. The Rotate tool, fourth icon from the right, allows both resizing and rotation of Switchgear. Select the Rotate tool, and then click and drag on the Switchgear symbol. Holding down the SHIFT key will provide easy orthogonal locking to all 45 degree angle points. By maintaining the current rotation, you can do a rescale-only operation. Holding down the CTRL key will maintain the size of the Switchgear while only rotating it. When you release the mouse, the Switchgear will rotate. It will rescale only if you did not hold down the CTRL key. Some examples are shown in Figure Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

Figure 3.6 On the left is the Switchgear pictured in Figure 3.4, rotated 45 degrees to the right. On the right is the same Switchgear, rotated and resized. 3.4 Switchgear Import and Export Since Switchgear elements are aggregate points that rely on other elements in the model, Switchgear import and export is done similarly to the way we handle Midpoint files. During export, if the model has any Switchgear, a SWG file is created with one line for each Switchgear. The SWG file layout is described in Appendix C: SWG File Layout. 3.5 Searching Since Switchgear elements are Map Points, they can be searched for by using existing WindMil search functionality and selecting Map Point Name. 16 4 Switchgear Editor What you will learn in this section: How to use the Switchgear Tab How to use the Equipment Tab How to use the Connections Tab How to use the Outage Data Tab Switchgear is a special type of Map Point. As such, the Switchgear Editor is the Map Point Editor with a few changes. Some existing pieces of the Map Point Edtior are still present, including the Projects Tab, the External Tab, and the Polygons Tab, as these tabs are all part of Switchgear as well. Added tabs are covered in this section. Keep in mind that all data outside of the Switchgear Tab is aggregate data. That is, the data is tied to other elements in the model and the Switchgear Editor is simply providing a central access point. 4.1 Switchgear Tab The Switchgear Tab provides basic access to a couple options for the Switchgear Element itself, as shown in Figure 4.1. Figure 4.1 The Switchgear Tab provides basic information about the Switchgear Map Point itself Switchgear Reference Name The Switchgear Reference Name reflects the name of the Switchgear Template that was used to first create the Switchgear. When created, the Switchgear Reference Name is stored on the Switchgear Element. It becomes an auxiliary field for users. Note: Changing the Switchgear Reference Name on the Switchgear will not affect the original Switchgear Template Switchgear Border Color The Switchgear Border Color can be changed on each Switchgear. As described in the Switchgear Display Options section, you can also override all Switchgear Border Colors across the model using the Switchgear Tab in Display Options. 10 Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

4.2 Equipment Tab The Equipment Tab provides the most control over Switchgear. Only Switch and Device cabinets are listed within the Equipment Tab. Users can edit the status of each Device or Switch from here without having to zoom in and click on each individual device. Figure 4.2 The Equipment Tab provides you with the ability to edit the status and equipment of Devices and Switches in the Switchgear Switch Cabinet Switch Cabinets have only one control: the ability to set the Switch to Open or Closed Device Cabinet Device Cabinets have the ability to modify the device equipment on a per-phase basis or on all phases simultaneously if the All Phases the Same checkbox is checked. The user can also set the device to be open or closed by phase or all at once by leaving the Ganged checkbox checked. 4.3 Connections Tab The Connections Tab is informational only. It provides connection information about each cabinet. Cabinet Number Cabinet Type Cabinet Section Name for Switch or Device Cabinets Switch ID for Switch Cabinets Flow of Current In or Out If the Cabinet has Flow In, then additional data is provided about the source of that flow: Feeder Source Element directly upline from cabinet and Equipment on that element. If the Cabinet has Flow Out, then the Feeder and Source are nulled. This is because the cabinet will be receiving flow from one or more of the other cabinets. Because it could be getting flow from multiple sources and multiple feeders, displaying a single feeder or source is not valid. We still display: Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 11

Elements directly downline from the cabinet and equipment on those elements. In Figure 4.3, the PMH-9 Switchgear has a different source supplying each Switch Cabinet. The lines directly downline from each Device Cabinet are shown along with their equipment. Figure 4.3 The Connections Tab provides Flow, Source, and Feeder data for each cabinet, as well as basic equipment data about the elements connected to each cabinet. 4.4 Outage Data Tab The Outage Data Tab is endemic to DisSPatch and displays basic outage data the same as the existing Outage Data Tab for the Section Editor except on a Cabinet basis. This is aggregate data about the cabinet sections. If the cabinet type is Bus Only or Empty, the cabinet is not included in the list. You can see the Outage Data Tab in Figure Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

Figure 4.4 The Outage Data Tab shows outage data only for cabinets which have a Cabinet Section of type Device or Switch. The data is the same the user would get by viewing the Outage Data Tab on the Section Editor for the specific element. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 13

5 Switchgear Settings What you will learn in this section: How to set a global Switchgear Border color How to set a relative Switchgear Device zoom level 5.1 Switchgear Display Options The Symbol Options Tab within the Display Options preferences has a Switchgear section, shown in Figure 5.1, which enables you to set a couple global options for Switchgear Global Border Color You can set a global border color for all Switchgear in the model. This will not change the border color assigned to each Switchgear. That is, this will not modify the assigned color. Instead, this just overrides all colors. Turning this option off will restore the original colors on a per-switchgear basis. Figure 5.1 The Switchgear section in the Symbol Options Tab within Display Options enables you to globally set a Switchgear Border color and to turn Custom Switchgear Symbols on and off as well as choose Overlay Symbol settings Overlay Symbols When zoomed out far enough (based on user options), the entire set of element symbols and the Switchgear symbol are replaced with a single Switchgear Map Point overlay symbol. The default Overlay Symbol, shown in Figure 5.2, resembles the Zoomed In Switchgear symbols. If the Use Circular Overlay option is selected, the Overlay Symbols resemble circles as shown in Figure 5.3. The Show On/Off Status option shades the Overlay Symbol based on whether or not a cabinet is open or closed. 14 Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

Figure 5.2 Zoomed Out Switchgear symbols showing Milsoft s Default symbols with no shading to represent bank status (top) and with shading to represent bank status (bottom). The symbols represent Switchgear with 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 Switch Banks from left to right. Note that even count cabinets can be set to In Line too. Figure 5.3 Zoomed Out Switchgear symbols showing the Circular Overlay with no shading to represent bank status (top) and with shading to represent bank status (bottom). The symbols represent Switchgear with 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 Switch Banks from left to right. 5.2 Switchgear Symbol Size Devices and Switches that are part of Switchgear are drawn at a size relative to the total Switchgear symbol width. There is a setting on the Circuit Element Symbol Tab within the Display Options, shown in Figure 5.4, which changes the point at which the zoomed-out Switchgear symbol replaces the rectangular Switchgear symbols. Setting this setting to 1 will replace the rectangular Switchgear symbol only when the distance from one side of the rectangle to the other matches the standard symbol size of all other elements. In the case of Figure 5.4, that is a symbol size of 6. Making this setting larger than 1 will draw the Switchgear symbol relatively larger than other symbols and replace the rectangle sooner. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 15

Figure 5.4 Switchgear relative symbol size is set to 4 in this image. 16 Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

6 Switchgear in WindMilMap Since most of what makes up a Switchgear is the existing elements in the model, the Switchgear Associated Elements will still resemble the Switchgear shape in WindMilMap. The Switchgear Map Points are drawn dynamically in WindMil but WindMilMap does not have access to the same fields. This introduces some differences in available symbolization options for Switchgear in WindMilMap. 6.1 Switch and Device Symbol Sizes In WindMil, we automatically resize Devices and Switches based on the scale of the Switchgear. WindMilMap lacks the data to make these calculations. There is an In Switchgear field brought across into WindMilMap for all Switches and Devices, which can be used as a reference point to reduce their symbol size. 6.2 Switchgear Map Point Symbols In WindMil, we dynamically create Switchgear Map Point Symbols around the Switchgear Associated Elements. We do not currently supply Switchgear Map Point symbols because WindMilMap relies on predrawn glyphs. We do provide a Switchgear layer complete with the fields listed in the following table, which can be used to create your own Switchgear Map Point symbols. Field Details Border Color Switchgear Cabinet Count Switchgear Reference Name Switchgear Type Box or In Line In addition, Switchgear are a type of Map Point, so all fields that come across for Map Points are available, as shown in the table below. Is Modified Map Name Map Point Name Map Point Type Project Name Symbol Rotation User Tag X Coordinate Y Coordinate Field 6.3 Switchgear TTF Switchgear Name Switchgear Rotation Center of Switchgear Center of Switchgear Details There are plans to introduce a Switchgear True Type Font (TTF) within WindMilMap in the future, which will allow users to duplicate existing WindMil and DisSPatch symbols within WindMilMap. Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions 17

7 Switchgear in DisSPatch Our OMS solution, DisSPatch, uses the same renderers as WindMil, so all the screenshots showing Switchgear symbology in most of this document also reflect how they are seen in DisSPatch. 7.1 Notes Since Switchgear Elements are a special type of Map Point, they can still have Notes and Assessments like other Map Points in DisSPatch. 7.2 Outage Status Switchgear serves as an aggregate data point for our customers padmounted Switchgear. We have adjusted the Outage Status form to include the ability to choose which Cabinet to set the outage status for as shown in Figure 7.1. Figure 7.1 The Outage Status dialog has an added combo menu allowing you to choose which cabinet of a Switchgear to set the status for. Only valid cabinets containing a Device or Switch are available in the combo box. When a Switchgear is selected with the Outage Status form already open, the Cabinet will default to the first cabinet with a Switch or Device in it. If a user attempts to change the status of any element which is a part of the Switchgear, the Outage Status form will open as though they were adjusting the Switchgear. 18 Copyright Milsoft Utility Solutions

8 Appendix A: Included Switchgear Templates The table here lists all S&C and G&W Switchgear models, which are already created as templates within the sample EQDB that comes with WindMil. 27 10 Appendix C: SWG File Layout When exporting a model with Switchgear Map Points in it, each Switchgear Map Point will have one line in an auxiliary file with the extension SWG. All of the electrical data about the elements that are a part of the Switchgear are still exported in the STD file. There are several benefits to this design. Electrical Connectivity is preserved even if you do not import with the SWG file available because all of the Switchgear associated elements data is still stored in the STD file. No large changes to our existing STD file were required. In fact, no changes were made at all to accommodate Switchgear. This preserves functionality for all users Switchgear General Fields Field Type Description Details 1 ASCII Name 1-25 characters 2 GUID GUID 3 SI Type 0 for Box, 1 for In Line 4 Float X Coordinate 5 Float Y Coordinate 6 ASCII Template Name Not Linked to Equipment 7 SI Cabinet Count 8 SI System Bus Count 10.2 Cabinet Fields After the Switchgear General Fields are written, the following fields are written for each cabinet in the Switchgear, one cabinet at a time.
