1 Lesson 4 Elementary Got Food? Soul Food Series Verse Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good for the soul! Isaiah 55:2 NLT The Point of the Lesson: Each child will learn that food is not always available. There are many people who don t have enough food. They will understand that God wants them to show compassion to those around them who are less fortunate. When they share what they have with others, they are letting God s love show through caring hearts. The Power of God s Word: Share what you have with God s people who are in need. Be hospitable. Romans 12:13 GWRD The Prayer of Each Child: Dear God, Thank You for all the food that You provide for my family and me. Please help me to have a kind and caring heart so that I can share with others. 3 Big Room Lesson Introduction Transition for MC: How s everyone doing today? I am doing great. I am so stuffed though (rub stomach). I just had a big family breakfast. We had so much food. I kept eating because it was all so good. My husband makes the best eggs and potatoes and biscuits. We had enough for an army. In fact, we could have given away some of the leftovers. Object Lesson: hold up picnic basket) We could use some of those leftovers and have a picnic. (look inside of basket) Uh oh this basket is empty. This won t feed anyone else. There are a lot of people out there who have empty kitchens and cabinets, just like this empty basket. Some people go to bed at night with empty stomachs. They don t have big family dinners. But God has a way to help them and that is through us. God wants us to share with others. That is why we have food drives and soup kitchens. That gives us a way to help others and share food with them. Transition for MC: That s right SHARE WITH OTHERS. A lot of us have heard this phrase many times. Maybe from our parents, teachers, or leaders, but today we are going to dig a little bit deeper and really talk about what it means to Share!!! There are many people around the world who are not as fortunate as us that we need to share with and show love to. Later on, we are going to take a look at a guy named Joseph and his amazing heart to share with others! Big Room Lesson Video *** Queue the video*** Below is what you will see in the video. Lesson in a Word: Share What Should I See? Joseph Pharaoh gave Joseph the job of storing up corn before the famine. A famine is when there is no food around for people to eat. When the famine came, Joseph s brothers traveled to Egypt to find food. They went to this leader, Joseph, to beg for corn, but the brothers didn t recognize that he was their brother until he made himself known to them. Joseph then got his father and brothers safely settled in Egypt. Joseph took care of all of them and their families, right down to the smallest baby. He made sure that they had plenty of food to eat. Joseph shared all that was his to help his family during this difficult time. (Source: Genesis 47: 11-13)

4 What s The Key? The key to unlocking this lesson today is learning to share with others who are less fortunate than we are. Not everyone has plenty to eat each day. Some people are in hard situations where they don t have enough to eat. We need to care about others and share what we can with them. Joseph did not have to help his brothers. They had treated him badly in the past. But he still did the right thing by helping them out and looking after them. What s That To Me? God has given us many blessings, like a home, a family, friends, even basic things like food and clothes. But there are other people in the world who struggle with just having basic things, like food. When we think only about what we want, we are being selfish. We need to think about others and how we can help others have a better life. We need to care about others because God does. We can show them God s love when we help them. How Should I Be? There are lots of ways that we can help others. With an adult or family member, there are lots of ways that we can help in our own town. We can help with food drives or neighborhood collections. We can donate time at a neighborhood soup kitchen. We can help collect money for an organization to give food to shelters or places that need food. This week, we can even help prepare a meal to take to someone in my neighborhood who is in need.
