4 A9erschool Programs and Student Learning NCLB and a na/onal focus on closing the achievement gap have led to increased expecta/ons for a>erschool programs to provide academic support and enrichment. A>erschool programs have always cared about suppor/ng youth cogni/ve development as part of posi/ve youth development (Dev. Domains.) Now, however, we must become more inten/onal about the link between a>erschool and student learning and clearly ar/culate this link to key stakeholders (parents, funders, school partners.)

11 Common Core State Standards Historically, state departments of educa/on developed their own academic standards. In 2009, governors and state commissioners of educa/on from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia (D.C.) commi]ed to developing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for proficiency in English- language arts and Mathema/cs for grades K- 12. The CCSS define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K- 12 educa/on, so that they will graduate from high school college and career ready. To date, 45 states and D.C. have adopted the CCSS. New state tests aligned with the CCSS will be rolled out in the school year.

12 Common Core State Standards in New York State In January 2011, the Board of Regents approved the New York State P- 12 Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), which are the compila/on of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the addi/onal standards developed by the NY State Department of Educa/on (NYSED.) In order to prepare students and teachers over the next three years for the Common Core- aligned state assessments of , The New York State Educa/on Department (NYSED) is star/ng to align their summa/ve assessments to the CCLS in

14 Students who meet the ELA standards will be able to: Demonstrate independence. Build strong content knowledge. Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline. Comprehend, as well as cri/que informa/on. Value evidence. Use technology and digital media strategically and capably. Come to understand other perspec/ves and cultures.

In groups of 3-4, have each person share one ac/vity from their program that would give children the opportunity to work in either of these two areas. *Tip: Consider ac/vi/es that would have children reading/discussing/wri/ng non- fic/on or building their speed & accuracy with math facts
