Students and staff have been very busy in their classrooms. They have been focusing on establishing rules and routines; getting to know one another; reviewing Zones of Regulation and Growth mindset strategies, establishing students academic strengths and areas of growth and digging into the curriculum. If you would like to learn more about what your child will be learning this year, please visit Our EQAO scores in Grades 3 & Grade 6 have been released. We are using the data to see where we can better support our students and their learning. Our Primary EQAO results for this past year show very strong gains in Reading, Writing and Math with achievement levels that are on par with or that exceed Board and Provincial targets. Our Junior scores indicate good gains in Writing, steady achievement in Reading and a modest gain in Math. In keeping with the Ministry s renewed math focus, numeracy instruction and achievement will be at the centre of our learning journey here at LE. Staff will continue to work together with the common vision of improving student achievement within the context of a safe, welcoming and productive learning climate. Students should be able to share their learning goals and success criteria. The success criteria provides students with clear descriptions of what they need to do to be successful. Area Trustee Donna Edwards Students are actively participating in our co-curricular activities: Cross Country running, volleyball, Eco Club, Junior Flag Football as well as our Student Voice Council. We hosted an Open House, our first School Community Council meeting, and practiced our fire safety drills. 2 P A G E 2 Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day October 26th, 2016 On October 26 th, the DDSB is proud to participate in Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day. Years of research confirm the benefits of high quality early years programming and child care for young children s intellectual, emotional, social and physical development; and later life outcomes. Trained and knowledgeable Early Childhood Educators and child care staff are the most important elements in delivering quality early years programming and child care. The DDSB employs 327 Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) working in our Kindergarten program. The DDSB also partners with early years agencies and child care providers, whose ECE and child care staff offer a wide range of quality programming and services to families and their pre-school age children in Durham schools. These partnered programs and services include: Early years programming in 30 Family Support Hub locations Kindergarten readiness School s Cool programming in 11 summer school programs Welcome To Kindergarten programs in 108 schools Infant, toddler and pre-school child care services in 23 DDSB schools Nursery School programs in 19 DDSB schools Before and after school Extended Day and school-age child care in 82 DDSB schools After school recreational program services in 29 DDSB schools WOW - that's almost 1000 Early Childhood Educators working in our schools! On October 26th, we celebrate the efforts and achievements of our ECE employees in our Kindergarten program! We also celebrate the ECEs and child care staff who partner in DDSB schools to provide an integrated and seamless range of programs and services for Durham families and their children!

3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 PAGE School starts at 8:40am and ends at 3:10pm. Our lunch hour is 11:25am-12:25pm. Please aim to have your child(ren) at school by 8:35am so they can connect with friends and be ready to enter their class on time. Being in class on time is important so your child doesn t miss that valuable input and organization. It also helps to keep them feeling relaxed and on top of their day. Supervision begins at 8:30am. Should you need to drop off your child(ren) before this, please contact Umbrella Daycare at regarding their before school program. Dismissal Please be sure to share dismissal routine information with your child s teacher. Students are expected to enter and exit at their assigned doors. This ensures an efficient flow in and out of the building and it is an important safety procedure so teachers can account for students. Parents/guardians please arrange to meet students outside or at their designated doors. Please do not meet students in the hallways or in the front foyer as this interrupts the flow of students leaving the school in a safe and orderly fashion. 4 DDSB NEW SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM Lord Elgin Public School uses the Safe Arrival program to manage student attendance reporting. The Safe Arrival program reduces the time it takes to verify student attendance making it easier for you to report your child s absence and easier for staff to respond to unexplained student absences. The Safe Arrival program allows parents to report their child s absence quickly and conveniently in one of two ways: Parents can log into a website, to access a Safe Arrival Parent Portal where an account can be set up to report absences. If you have an Android or Apple device, you can also download the free SafeArrival app. You can go to the Google Play store or the Apple App and search using the keyword "safearrival" (one word) to download the Synrevoice SafeArrival app. Use district code ddsb or search for Durham District School Board. Parents can call into an automated interactive telephone system via a toll free number ( ) through which absences can be reported. Parents must report student absences prior to bell time for the current day, as well as future absences via the internet or telephone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Future absences may be reported ahead of time, i.e.; Doctor s appointment. Please do not contact the school directly to report an absence. We are also using an automated notification system to contact parents who have not reported their child absent. The automated notification system will contact parents at multiple contact numbers until one of the designated contacts is reached. If the system is unable to reach a designated contact after 20 minutes, office staff will follow up. By reporting your child absent in advance using the Safe Arrival number or Safe Arrival Parent Portal website, you will not receive a call. The benefit of using the Safe Arrival Parent Portal website is that you may report your child s absences, update your contact phone numbers and addresses should they change, as well as review messages sent through our School Connects system.
