We will celebrate our Catholic faith and respect the unique gifts of each individual while encouraging academic excellence in a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment. Principal s Message: Dear Parents/Guardians, How quickly October is upon us! We are five weeks into the school year and we are on the cusp of Thanksgiving. The season of autumn has graced us as leaves begin to turn into vibrant golds, reds and rusts, and temperatures begin to change. Our classes are now settling into classroom routines and the rigors of another school year. The Spirit is Alive here at St. Nicholas each and every day. Our children are actively engaged in learning in rich learning environments that foster their academic, social and spiritual well-being. We are seeing their growth with every stride they take, encouraging them always to have a growth mindset to always seek new challenges and never give up. Our School Improvement focus for will once again be in the area of math. Our FDKS, primary, junior and intermediate divisions have picked a math focus that they will be reviewing regularly to continue to strengthen math skills in our children. Our Soar with the Nighthawks mini Cross Country event was a wonderful success. Our children also showed their athletic ability once again at our Cross Country Meet held at Regina Mundi College on October 6th. All our children earned many ribbons that demonstrated their personal best. It was terrific to have so many of our parents join us on such a gorgeous day to cheer on our school. The field was lit up in neon green and navy. Thank you kindly to all of you the St. Nicholas families who have welcomed me so warmly to your school community. You have beautiful children! I am very proud to walk hand in hand with you as we watch your children learn and grow. 2 School Fundraising Goals The monies raised from fundraisers such as Panago Pizza, Spirit Wear or QSP will be used to directly support our students by subsidizing the cost of busing for field trips, to purchase outdoor play equipment for each class, to host guest speakers/ authors and other initiatives that support the School Improvement initiatives and goals. October School Mass Our October school mass will be on Friday October 14th at 9:30 am. All parents are welcome to attend this mass. Catholic School Council Meeting: Our School Council meeting will be held on Tuesday October 18th at 6:30 p.m. in our school library. All parents are welcome to attend! Student Parliament: School Focus on Syrian Refugees This year, any fundraising that our Student Parliament undertakes (e.g. School Spirit Days) will be directed towards supporting the sponsorship of a Syrian Refugee Family in conjunction with St. George Parish. Thank you to Mrs. Lucier and our Student Parliament Committee for their leadership in this area. This year, our Student Parliament includes: Rylee, Noelle, Peter, Emma, Laura, Nik, Mama, Tristan, Maddie, Ava, Ella, Alexi, Riley, Maeve and Molly. Have you signed up for Twitter? School Spirit Wear School Spirit Wear order forms went home earlier this week. We will have samples of clothing and sizing available for view in our foyer. All orders are due by Friday, Oct. 14th It is each family s responsibility to order the correct size as items cannot be returned due to incorrect size selection. Many parents have inquired as to whether Spirit Wear can be worn in gym class, and according to the Dress Code Policy voted on last year, it can be worn. Otherwise, students can wear a plain navy or white shirt and shorts, without any logos. Off Dress Code Days Noon Hour Supervisors Needed Every day at lunch we have noon hour supervisors who come in and help to supervise our students both while they are eating and while they are playing on the yard. When our supervisors are away we still need to maintain our safety ratios. If you are able to and would like to supervise children over the lunch hour, please contact Ms. Nathoo at the school. This is a paid position. This month, Oct. 27th is a scheduled off-dress code day. As we begin to head into Halloween, students are encouraged to wear Orange and Black on Monday October 31st Off Dress Codes will always be scheduled near the end of each month. Please remember to call the school at if you child is going to be late or absent. The answering machine is available 24/7.

3 Athletics and Student Activities at St. Nicholas: Home of the Nighthawks Cross Country Our Cross Country Meet took place on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at RMC. All Gr. 3/4 8 students participated in this Board-wide event. It was an awesome event that was blessed with brilliant sunshine. Our students put forth their personal best efforts and saw great achievements at the meet. Congratulations Nighthawks! Happy Thanksgiving Terry Fox Run Our entire school community took part in the Terry Fox Run in order to raise funds for the Marathon of Hope. Thank you to our community for helping to support this worthwhile cause. Lunch Hour Intramurals Our Gr. 4 8 students have the opportunity to sign up for intramurals during the lunch hour. The first round of intramurals is soccer. Junior intramurals take place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at lunch and Intermediate intramurals take place on Monday and Friday at lunch. Thank you to Mrs. Hollis, Mr. D Oria, Mr. Gallo, Mr. Turudic and Mrs. Lucier for offering this opportunity for our students. Turkey Bingo Lost and Found Our School-wide Turkey Bingo event is taking place on Friday, Oct. 7th at 1:00 p.m. We are in need of some prizes and two small frozen turkeys. Thank you to Mr. D Oria and Mrs. Lucier for running this event. Already our lost and found bin is overflowing! We will put items out on the table in the next week. Please make sure that student names are on all clothing items because with our new dress code many items appear to be identical and sometimes students are not sure if the item of clothing is theirs..
