1 Sample Philosophy Statement Subject: Art Through my journey in the corporate world, I have learned how to efficiently organize and manage time, develop professional leadership behavior, enhance my written and verbal skills and above all, deliver utmost service to clientele and professionals in the business. I have served the role of a mentor by assisting new employees in becoming acquainted with their career and have been involved in presenting new materials in front of a large audience. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to prosper in my various career fields and educational institutions. I feel that these experiences will guide me as I transition into the education profession as a teacher of art. Coming from the corporate environment has provided me with opportunities for real world experience, expansion of skills and development of characteristics vital to becoming an encouraging teacher and an inspirational role model for students. My real world perspective that I bring with me will be an intricate component of my teaching practices and will enhance my ability to be a true 21 st Century educator. My teaching philosophy integrates components of my educational exposure, life experiences, personal values and expertise, along with a positive outlook on life and determined success. I practice and believe in self-motivation and intend to motivate others by making them aware of their absolute potential and the fact that they too can be successful if their minds are exercised properly. I am ready to involve myself in the rewarding and gratifying field of teaching. I will strive to appropriately challenge my students through critical thinking activities, class participation and hands-on instructional involvement, all designed to promote positive learning outcomes. I will ensure at all

2 times that my students comprehend lessons taught through varied assessments. Through regular, formative assessments and by observing students application of previously learned information, I will obtain the feedback required to intervene when necessary and make sure no student is neglected. Three way communication between teacher, student and parents/guardians will be maintained at all times in my classroom. I will ensues that everyone is aware of my expectations and I will be cognizant of the expectations of my students and their parents/guardians. Parents/guardians will be informed of the progress that their child makes throughout the school year. As a teacher I would be an avid participant of parent/teacher conferences, back to school night and communicate progress via , phone and scheduled meetings. Art, unlike other areas of academic concentration, allows students the opportunity to explore their imagination and express limitless creativity. Studies have shown that vision is the most commonly dependent sense and art, nonetheless, is visual and a universal language that can be understood worldwide. It only takes one powerful and meaningful image to make a tremendous impact in our society like Leonardo da Vinci s, Mona Lisa which is a well-known international masterpiece. Through art, individuals can express emotions and tell a story without the story ever being written or spoken. Art has no boundaries but requires learning specialized techniques and endless stylized designs. As technology rapidly advances, art is brought into play through use of electronic media such as computers, digital, web, graphic and visual designs. Students would be introduced to digital media related software and hardware in my classroom.

3 My educational studies and areas of concentration consist of; web, graphic and visual design. Two-dimensional design includes drawing, painting with acrylic, water, and oil paint mediums. Painting subjects are portraits, landscapes, representational and abstraction styles just to name a handful. Three-dimensional consists of sculpture, ceramics, and geometric modeling. Architecture and interior design introductions make certain for a well-rounded artistic degree in all levels of visual communications. The lesson and skills that I implement and focus on will be taught to my students professionally and effectively. The lessons they learn will be presented innovatively and creatively to captivate my students interest and engage them in the inspiring world of art.

4 Sample Philosophy Statement 2 Subject: Elementary School/Special Ed. As a Kindergarten through Grade 5 Special Education teacher, my philosophy of teaching first and foremost is based upon student-centered learning. My primary objective is to facilitate learning based upon the student's needs, abilities, interests, and learning styles. I will accomplish this through comprehensive understanding of Individual Education Plans and working towards these goals. To this end, I will utilize effective positive behavioral support approaches, as well as incorporate assistive technology and social/emotional skills development. Utilizing a person-center approach is key to my philosophy. I believe that students will achieve in a positive environment that is safe, comfortable, nurturing, caring and supportive. My intent is to create and project those feelings to my students through active communications, which come in the way of listening, speaking, reading, writing, drawing, pictures or simply by actions. Utilization of technology will prove to be an asset to developing communication and relationships with my students. Creating behavioral expectations, routine and structure is equally as important. Whether it is providing one-on-one, small group or whole class instruction, my students will be a team, engaging in cooperative learning. We will learn to accept, as well as respect one another s differences, feelings and will support one another to develop to the best of our abilities. We will take time to celebrate our accomplishments, laugh, have fun and reflect on what works, as opposed to what doesn t.

5 Ongoing communication, collaboration and professional development are at the core of my decision to be a special education teacher. As a special educator, I see it my responsibility for continuing professional development successively to keep up on the latest research, trends and community resources. This is essential for me to effectively contribute and collaborate with Child Study Teams, Teachers, Therapists, Administrators, along with families, the local community and most importantly my students. I do not see my role stopping in the classroom at the end of the day. I will be open and encourage constant communication. Being able to positively help and support students, families, colleagues and the community is my motivating factor as a special education teacher. Literacy is the common denominator at the core of all content area learning. I believe that a strong reading, writing and thinking base should be formed at the elementary level, as it is the foundation for which all other learning and higher levels of thinking will emerge in secondary grades and beyond creating life-long learners. As a special educator, I will be cognizant to integrate reading, writing and thinking skills in day-today teachings of all contents areas. I view literacy as an integral part of each content area that can be incorporated at some level into each lesson. The use of developmentally appropriate educational and assistive technology will play a large role in successfully conveying my lessons.
