3 Fundamentals of Engineering (MECE 4101) Kamal Sarkar Fall 2016 Grading System I. Class Policies: 1. Look at the class schedule carefully. Make sure that you are prepared for the class topic. 2. Fundamentals of each topic will be covered on the first day of the class as outlined in the schedule. 3. Following class day, there will be a quiz on the topic. There are 10 questions for each topic. II. Resources/Fees: 1. Your Required Text book is: NCEES supplied Reference Handbook on FE (Fundamentals of Engineering), 8 th Edition, 2 nd Revision, April 2011 Please note that you need to use this reference formulae book for EVERY quiz AND Practice FE Exam at the end of the semester. 2. Your optional, but suggested, reference book is FE Review Manual, Michael R. Lindeburg, Third Edition, Professional Publication, Inc., Belmont, CA 3. You must also pay for the on-line Practice FE test (about $40 to ppi2pass.com) as a requisite for getting a grade for the course. III. Practice Exam: 1. 40% of your grade will be decided based on the Practice FE Exam. This on-line test will have two parts and each part is three hours long. 2. This two and half hour test includes both AM (about 32 questions for fundamental engineering concepts) and PM (about 18 questions for advanced mechanical engineering topics like heat transfer, K&D, etc.) parts 3. Cost for Practice FE test is around $40 dollars. 4. Here is the Guideline for the on-line Practice FE Exam: a. It is a two part on-line tests. b. Each part is about an hour and fifteen minutes c. AM part is for Fundamentals. It will start sharp at 10:00 AM d. PM part is for advanced Mechanical Engineering topics. It will start around 11:30 PM e. Practice FE will end at 1 PM. f. There will be a one hour lunch (1 PM to 2 PM). g. Blackboard test is for an hour (2 PM to 3 PM) h. Be in the test room at least 15 minutes early (9:45 AM by the latest). i. You are only allowed FE Supplied-Reference Handbook (Textbook) and allowed calculators discussed in the class. j. You are NOT allowed anything else. Scratch papers and pencils will be supplied. k. No electronic devices (including cell phone) are allowed.

4 l. It is an individual test. No discussions are allowed. Please come to the Proctor for the Test directly to clarify any doubt. 5. To access/buy on-line test access from Exam Café, (i) Go to (ii) Click on the Sign-up/Enroll button on the left-hand menu. (iii) Scroll to the Students section at the bottom of the page and click the Enroll button. (iv) Fill in all the fields on the enrollment form (Students should choose their own user name and password. (v) In the Access Code field, enter the following access code for your exam TBD, then click "Submit". (vi) Complete credit card payment. The student will need to enter their credit Card number and billing address. (vii) If the credit card is accepted, the exam will then be available. Please remember: A credit card is required for students to pay for the exam. American Express, Visa, * Mastercard, and Discover are accepted. IV. Grading Policy: 1. Grading will be based on a relative curve based on class performance. 2. Grades will be based on the total scores of morning and afternoon sessions for both Practice FE and Blackboard tests 3. Your final grade has three components as noted below: Quizzes (20%), Practice FE (40%), and Blackboard test (40%) 4. Grades are based on following percentages A 89%, 89% > B 79%, 79% > C 69%, 69% > D 59%, F < 59% V. Office Hours: a. Topics Covered: Pl. see the schedule above. VIII. Attendance: 1. Attendance will be taken every time the class meets. Any student arriving to class 5 minutes after the class has started will not be allowed in class. Students will be allowed a maximum of three absences for the whole semester for classes meeting twice a week, two absences for classes meeting once a week, and one absence for laboratory courses. Five points will be deducted from the total (100%) for each absence exceeding the maximum allowable unless documentation justifying that absence is provided. 2. Students will not be permitted to leave the classroom during lectures and exams except for extreme emergencies. IX. Scholastic Integrity: As members of a community dedicated to Honesty, Integrity and Respect, students are reminded that those who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and expulsion from the University. Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, and collusion; submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person; taking an examination for another person; any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student; or the attempt to commit such acts. Since scholastic dishonesty harms the individual, all students and the integrity of the University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced (Board of Regents Rules and Regulations and UTRGV Academic Integrity Guidelines). All scholastic dishonesty incidents will be reported to the Dean of Students. X. Drop Policy: Students can withdraw from a course through the Office of the Registrar on or prior to: September 14 th, 2016, : Last day to drop a class before it appears on the transcript and counts toward the 6-drop limit. Last day to receive a 100% refund for dropped classes (other policies apply when a student is withdrawing from all classes). November 17 th, 2016, : Drop/Withdrawal Deadline; last day for students to drop the course and receive a DR grade. After this date, students will be assigned a letter grade for the course that will count on the GPA. XI. Course Drops: According to UTRGV policy, students may drop any class without penalty earning a grade of DR until the official drop date. Following that date, students must be assigned a letter grade and can no longer drop the class. Students considering dropping the class should be aware of the 3-peat rule and the 6-drop rule so they can recognize how dropped classes may affect their academic success. The 6-drop rule refers to Texas law that dictates that undergraduate students may not drop more than six courses during their undergraduate career. Courses dropped at other Texas public higher education institutions will count toward the six-course drop limit. The 3-peat rule refers to additional fees charged to students who take the same class for the third time.

6 MECE 4101 (Engineering Fundamentals) Objective and Course Structure Dr. Kamal Sarkar August 24, 2016 Rev D Objective of this course is to reinforce the basic concepts of engineering, in general, and mechanical engineer, in particular, to ensure that you can be a successful mechanical engineer. All key topics and/or concepts of mechanical engineering will be covered as discussions (first class day) and quiz (following class day) days (Pl. see the schedule for details). During discussion day (the first day on a topic), the professor will help the students to reinforce certain key concepts to be successful in the profession. During quiz (second day for the topic) students will take the quiz on the specific topic discussed the previous class day. IF there is no quiz for any reason, students are expected to reinforce those ideas by practicing on their own and/or as a team. Professor will discuss certain key concepts needed to understand the subject. (S)he will also discuss typical areas of weaknesses found among most students and how to address them. Some problems will be discussed and solved during this time. Successful completion of the course will help the students to be prepared for actual FE test, a necessary step for getting the professional license (PE). Successful completion of the course will also help the students to prepare for their first job interview.
