BOTANY FOR ARTISTS (Core subject open to all) Tina Thieme Brown tinathiemebrown@comcast.net Gain an understanding of the fascinating structures of plants to see your botanical art come alive! Learn how to identify plants, probe, dissect and sketch sections of flowers and fruits, recognize subtle variations of leaf margins, leaf to stem connection, the variation in thorns or hairs. Learn how to prepare a field study page, a reference for future paintings that include your observations sketches and pressed plant samples. No prerequisite. Sketchbook: or 9 12 Strathmore 400 Series Sketchbook. Tracing Paper: Matboard: cut to in a light beige or grey color. Pencils: Pencil/pen for notes; Drawing pencils - 2H, HB, 2B graphite; HV Woodless graphite pencil. Pen: PIGMA Micron.005 and.05 pens in black and sepia Eraser: White plastic eraser and Kneaded eraser Brush: Small clean brush for removing erasures Ruler: Clear Plastic ruler with centimeters and inches indicated. Magnifier: Jewelers loupe with at least 10X. Assorted models available on line. This is essential. Knife: Single blade (safely stored) or lightweight utility knife for dissections Tape: Scotch Tape, matte finish Wax Paper Glue: Archival glue Books: The following will be available in class but a personal copy of each as below, is strongly recommended - 1. Newcomb s Wildflower Guide, by Lawrence Newcomb, Little, Brown and Co., A Guide to Flowering Plant Families, by Wendy Zomlefer. UNC Press, 1994 (This book is a plant family guide and the best choice for those who portray native wildflowers) BOTANICAL PAINTING: A Beautiful Leaf Just as leaves are essential to a plant so it is essential they are accurately and skillfully illustrated. In botanical art, leaves complete the portrait and enhance the floral focal point. Exercises will focus on capturing the character and detail of leaves in watercolor. Emphasis on: color mixing, the basic Saul wash method and the application of dry colored pencil. Dry brush will be demonstrated. (Intermediate advanced) Watercolor paints: WINSOR & NEWTON brand 5 ml tubes (Artist quality) - Winsor Lemon, DO NOT purchase W&N Lemon Yellow ; W&N Winsor Yellow Deep - W&N Permanent Rose; W&N Scarlet Lake; - W&N Winsor Blue (Green Shade) and M. Graham brand Cobalt Blue Pencils: HB & 4H (sharpened); Paper stomp; Eraser: Gray kneaded type Watercolor brushes: 3 - Sable Rounds, Sizes 0, 2 and 6 (Artist quality) Colored pencils: Faber-Castell Polychromos ROUND SHAFTS, water resistant (not the hexagonal aquarelles) in assorted natural greens Juniper -165, Pine Green -267, and Earth Green Yellowish

2 Watercolor paper: Fabriano Artistico, 140lb, HP, extra white (cut into manageable size pieces ready for class) Tracing paper: small amount, light weight; Sketch pad Palettes: 2 - small, round ceramic Flower palettes ) not plastic Cellulose sponge: clean, instantly absorbs water from brushes. Cleaning aisle of grocery stores Kleenex tissues; Water container - 1 clear plastic, 4-cup capacity. Similar to lightweight disposables (Paints, sponge and palette can be stored securely in this container when traveling to class.) Foam board: small portable backdrop. Black one side and white the other. Cut the sheet into 2 rectangles each With clear tape, tape the longest sides together (leave gap of 1/8 to allow for folding). Foam board is available at art shops or picture framers. If board with white both sides, paste black craft paper on one side. BOTANICAL WITH COLOR BASICS - Look & Learn (Same as Botanical Painting Basics offered last Sept.) Joan Maps Ducore djducore@gmail.com Watch then try for yourself the watercolor wash techniques for painting leaves and petals: flat wash; graded wash; and soft edges - beautiful! Class size in the Look & Learn series is limited to seven for optimum viewing of the demonstrations at the teacher s desk (no big mirrors or high tech devices). Minimal amount of painting material required. - use student quality paints, brushes, palettes, water containers supplied or, bring the following artist quality materials if intending to try basic painting techniques as demonstrated. Watercolor paints: 3 only - small tubes (choose either student or artist quality) Winsor & Newton Artist quality 5 ml tubes - Winsor Lemon; DO NOT purchase W&N Lemon Yellow ; - W&N Permanent Rose; and - M. Graham brand Cobalt Blue. These three Artist Quality colors are used at all BGSBAI classes, Or Winsor & Newton Student quality 8ml tubes Cotman brand - Lemon Yellow Hue; Permanent Rose; Ultramarine Watercolor Brush: Round, ARTIST QUALITY or cheaper quality synthetic. Brush must retain a well pointed tip. - E.G. Raphael, Series Artist Quality watercolor round brush (Size 4), or - - Cheaper alternatives seek advice from the art store. Hobby brushes not suitable. Palette: One small round ceramic not plastic and with at least 7 wells (E.g., Flower palette ) Cellulose sponge: clean, instantly absorbs water from brushes. Cleaning aisle of grocery stores. Kleenex tissues. Water container: 1 clear plastic, 4-cup capacity. Similar to lightweight disposables. (Store paints, sponge and palette securely in this container when traveling to class.) Additional information: $1 charge for watercolor is in addition to the class fee and is to be paid to the instructor at class. NATURE JOURNAL: Spring Ephemerals Journaling outdoors is relaxing and enjoyable! Sketch spring woodland wild flowers at Brookside Gardens and any other subjects that catch your attention. Complete a journal page with ink outlining or color and include your thoughts and observations. Class time both days is split between outdoor sketching and indoors to complete a page. Three journaling styles will be demonstrated and students will be encouraged to explore various combinations of art media. Watercolor Sketchbook: Suggested size 5" 8, 8.5" 11" or as preferred. Available at art stores and online at sites such as Blick Art Materials. A few examples - Hand Book Artist Journals, Aquabee Super Deluxe, Mirage Sketchbooks, and Art Alternatives Watercolor Books. Plain covers are ideal. Hardbound or spiral bound recommended. Pencils: HB and 2B (mechanical pencils eliminate need for separate eraser and sharpener) Pen: PIGMA Micron pen, size (black or brown). Magnifier: any size Colored pencils or Watercolors: Set of 24 artist quality colored pencils (dry or aquarelle), or a watercolor travel set (includes paints and areas for mixing colors, plus a small brush), or your regular set of tube watercolors as listed for Painting 103 below. Watercolor brush: 1 - Sable Round, Size 4 (Artist quality) unless a suitable brush included if choosing a watercolor kit. Palette, plastic water container and small plastic bottle of painting water are required if not purchasing a watercolor travel set. Bring lunch and drinking water (Please note: Lunch cannot be eaten out in the garden.) Optional: hat, sunglasses, insect repellent and campstool. Keep an eye on the weather in case rain gear may be useful. If rain is predicted: Journaling can be done by referring to subject matter brought indoors, or from a gazebo, or in raingear, which includes an umbrella. 2

3 INTRODUCTION TO BOTANICAL ART: PAINTING (Core curriculum) Prerequisites: Drawing 101, Drawing 102 and Dimensional Study Painting 103 and Painting 205 complete the school s introductory core instruction in botanical art Total class time for each of these core subjects is 14 hours. Two week period between Painting 103 start of Painting 205 complete the project for 103 before continuing to 205. Homework tasks and practice - allow a minimum of five hours per week. PAINTING 103: Color Study & Watercolor Applications Kathy Lutter ps1914kat@aol.com Develop brush handling skills, watercolor techniques, color study to include limited palette exercise sheets to hone color observation and enable correct selection of three pigments to see the entire range of colors found in a specific plant magical! Consider design principles and apply botanical watercolor techniques in a final study of a fun arrangement of plant elements. Prerequisite: Drawing 101, Drawing 102, Dimensional Study 204 or drawing ability and rendering detailed, graphite tone. - Online ordering is advised for all your Painting 103 class materials. Pencils: Mars Luminograph (dark blue shaft) or other artist brand. One each of following grades H, HB, and 2B. Mechanical pencils are convenient (0.3 mm-0.5 mm graphite leads) but optional. Sketch book: 1 Spiral bound sheets/50 lb. or pad of similar drawing paper (Not a visual diary) Watercolor paper: Fabriano Artistico Bright White 140 lbs full sheet cut into quarters, bring 2 pieces to class. Tracing paper medium to light weight (2 sheets). (Not tracing vellum). Erasers: (i) White plastic eraser - Art gum not suitable (ii) Kneaded eraser, gray medium size Pencil sharpener: barrel type or craft knife with retractable blade. Please have a container for shavings. Transparent ruler 12 Watercolor paints: WINSOR & NEWTON (W&N) brand 5 ml tubes, Artist quality The 6 artist quality paints below are used at BGSBAI painting classes (no cadmium based colors used in the Saul Palette) - Yellows: W&N Winsor Lemon, (DO NOT purchase W&N Lemon Yellow) and W&N Winsor Yellow Deep - Reds: W&N Permanent Rose and W&N Scarlet Lake - Blues: W&N Winsor Blue (Green Shade) and M. GRAHAM brand Cobalt Blue. Gray scale value finder: by The Color Wheel Company and also available locally from Plaza Art Supplies Brushes: Raphael, Series 8404 Brand (or preferred brand) Sizes 2 & 4. Must be artist quality watercolor round brushes and 1 - Size 6 cheap synthetic brush for mixing pigment on palette, if you wish to spare your better brushes. Palettes: 3 small ceramic watercolor palettes, 7 wells in each ( Flower palette ); or a ceramic palette with at least 12 wells. Plastic palettes are problematic for color mixing of watercolors. Watercolor Paper 1 sheet Hot Pressed (HP = smooth surface) 140 lb FABRIANO Artistico (extra white) suitable weight for class exercises /small botanical studies. Cut into quarters, avoid excessive hand contact on surfaces - keep in protective folder. Cellulose sponge clean, instantly absorbs water from brushes. Cleaning aisle of grocery stores. Kleenex for cleaning unwanted paint from palettes etc. Water container 1 clear plastic, 4-cup capacity. Suggest something similar to lightweight disposables. (Store paints, sponge and palette securely in this container when traveling to class.) PAINTING 205: Botanical Painting Kathy Lutter ps1914kat@aol.com Build onto skills and color mixing know how acquired in Painting 103 to complete a small, botanical painting of a potted plant specified by the teacher at Class 1. Picture composition is also covered. Practice based on all the instruction undertaken from Drawing 101 onwards leads to opportunity to successfully enter your botanical painting in the annual juried exhibition Botanica, thereby gaining an Achievement Award. Prerequisite: Painting 103 or botanical painting experience. All the materials listed for Painting 103 as noted above. Also required Color study exercise sheets from Painting 103 Completed graphite studies - (i) L&S Study (ii) Tonal Composition of your plant subject studied at Dimensional Study 204. Aqua Foam dark green type. Bring a block of this to class in plastic container. PAINTING ROSES (Look & Learn) Joan Maps Ducore djducore@gmail.com Watch a rose bloom before your eyes in beautiful, transparent watercolor. Try for yourself each stage of the painting process for painting rose petals on watercolor paper supplied. PAINTING STUDIO: Advanced Reinforce the advanced level botanical watercolor techniques of the school s core curriculum, and receive further guidance on a work in progress, or focus on how to successfully complete your painting ready for entry it into Botanica. Prerequisite: Painting 205 or some experience in botanical watercolor. The materials required are the same as for those listed for BOTANICAL PAINTING: A Beautiful Leaf on page 1. PAINTING STUDIO: Beginner-intermediate Kathy Lutter ps1914kat@aol.com (Friday, April 25) Develop further confidence and gain greater enjoyment and satisfaction from your botanical painting. This relaxed learning opportunity focuses on watercolor painting through demonstrations and individual guidance for each student. Bring a work in progress, or focus on a specific painting technique to see your Painting 205 project ready to enter for Botanica. A successful entry will see you receive the school s Achievement Award. Prerequisite: Painting 103 or watercolor painting experience. The materials required are the same as for those listed for Painting 103 on page 1. SHADING BASICS Diane Berndt daberndt@verizon.net Make your pencil outline drawings appear to pop out from the page by recognizing specific areas of tone and creating subtle transitions of shading on shapes that underlie many plant forms. Enhance realism by correctly rendering reflected light and a cast shadow. Basic drawing ability is beneficial but not essential. Lead pencils: Mars luminograph (dark blue shaft) or other artist brand. One each of the following grades H, HB, 2B Writing pen and note pad Sketch book: Spiral bound lb. or pad of similar drawing paper (Not a visual diary) Erasers - 2: White plastic eraser and a Kneaded eraser, gray medium size Pencil sharpener - barrel type for collecting shavings Ruler: Transparent plastic 12 SKETCH TREES IN THE GARDEN Tina Thieme Brown tinathiemebrown@comcast.net Start a sketchbook of trees or include tree drawings in your botanical art. Classes focus on two beautiful trees at Brookside. The sketching process begins with observation, then drawing features that are useful in Tree Identification. Sketches and leaf rubbings will add to the drawing of a tree in the distance. Explore various sketching media: graphite, ink, and watercolor pencils. Meet in the classroom as designated in registration details. Watercolor Sketchbook: Suggested size 5" 8 or 8.5" 11". Example: Strathmore Visual Journal, Vellum paper surface or other artist quality sketchbook; Available at art stores and online websites. Drawing paper: extra sheets of lightweight, from general art supplies Pencils: HB, 2B, and a 4B graphite woodless pencil Pen: PIGMA Micron pen, size black & 05 black Prismacolor Art Stix: Olive Green and Sienna Brown to be used for leaf rubbings. Magnifier: any size with good magnification Ruler: clear plastic ruler Eraser: White plastic eraser and Kneaded eraser. Sharpener: Pencil sharpener and container for shavings. Tape: Scotch Tape matte finish Drawing board: Light weight with clip to hold drawings and tracing paper. Tracing Paper: Tracing paper on a roll or a tablet. Colored pencils or Watercolor pencils: Prismacolor pencils- Light to Dark, Warm and Cool Greens, Blues and Yellows. Watercolor brush: 1 - Sable Round, Size 4 (Artist quality) 4

5 Water container Bring drinking water (Please note: Plan for late lunch after class.) Outdoor sketching gear: Keep supplies minimal, lightweight and portable, dress for the weather and include a (small) camp stool. Optional: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent. Check weather in case rain gear, including an umbrella is needed. If rain predicted: Suitably sized potted plants will be available in the classroom; or if light rain, sketch from a gazebo.
