18 National Qualifications are Non-advanced qualifications (i.e. not HNC/HND) which include National Units, National Courses (e.g. Highers & Intermediate 1 & 2), National Certificate Group Awards, National Clusters and College-devised groupings of subject-related units. This type of study can often include job-related training and on successful completion you may leave to gain employment or continue your education at a more Advanced level using your National Qualification as a stepping stone. Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) are widely recognised professional qualifications, enabling learners to improve their knowledge, skills and understanding of specific areas of employment, normally through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. VRQs are usually assessed using assignments, practical tasks, exams or online tests allowing learners to progress through Levels 1-3. SVQs were introduced to improve the skills of the nation s workforce. Available for a wide range of occupations, SVQs are offered at levels 1-5. They provide an excellent route for those wishing to enhance career development. SVQs are designed primarily for the workplace but can be studied at College (where simulated workplace environments have been established) or through a mix of College attendance and workplace training. 16

19 HNC qualifications are a higher level than National Qualifications. Subjects are studied in greater depth and Units are usually around 40 hours in duration i.e. 1 credit. An HNC is achieved on successful completion of 12 credits. The College offers a wide range of HNC courses on a full-time basis. It will take between 18 weeks and one year of full-time study to achieve the award. You can also study on a part-time basis (part-time day study, evening classes or a combination of the two). Part-time students normally take two to three years to achieve an HNC, although Fast-Track courses may allow you to complete it in one year. HND courses offer a more in-depth level of study than HNC. An HND is awarded on successful completion of 30 credits and usually takes up to two years to compete on a full-time basis. Some HND courses are also available on a part-time basis. North East Scotland College offers PDAs at Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Diploma level. Certificates may be made up of Higher National Units, National Units, Workplace Assessed Units or a combination of any of these. Advanced Certificates and Diplomas are composed of Higher National Units. Please note that Certificates and Diplomas awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) are continuously assessed throughout the duration of the course. Assessment may take the form of written or practical project work, according to the nature of the course. Fast-Track courses make it possible to achieve an HNC within one year through a combination of study, e.g. one day per week, one to two evenings and part of the weekend. Fast-Track HNC programmes are particularly well-suited to people who want to combine study with a career. If you are interested in the Fast-Track route, please check with the relevant sector/study area regarding availability. 17

20 THE SCOTTISH CREDIT AND QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORK () IS SCOTLAND S LIFELONG LEARNING FRAMEWORK. IT CONTAINS THE QUALIFICATION FRAMEWORKS OF THE SCOTTISH QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY (SQA) AND SCOTTISH HIGHER EDUCATION (HE). THE AIMS TO: 1. Help people of all ages and circumstances to access appropriate education and training over their lifetime to fulfil their personal, social and economic potential; 2. Enable employers, learners and the public in general to understand the full range of Scottish qualifications, how they relate to each other and how different types of qualifications can contribute to improving the skills of the workforce. The is managed by the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Partnership whose members include Scottish Government, higher education and college sectors, employers and the SQA. Although it is not a regulatory body, the Partnership maintains the quality and use of the Framework as a whole. The diagram portrays the frameworks of HE, SQA and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs). However, the framework also currently contains over 400 qualifications and learning programmes such as non-formal learning offered in the community or by employers, professional bodies, vendors such as Microsoft and those offered by awarding bodies other than the SQA. The uses two measures to recognise learning: Level and Credit. Level provides an indication of the level of difficulty associated with a qualification or learning programme. This is based on one set of Level Descriptors which are developmental from Level 1 to 12. The Level Descriptors are used by Credit Rating Bodies to determine the level of learning irrespective of whether the qualification or learning programme is academic, vocational or non-formal. THE IS AN IMPORTANT FEATURE FOR LEARNING PROVISION. It has been credit rated in order to indicate the complexity level of the learning and to clarify how qualifications and learning programmes relate to each other. It also provides clarity for both articulation and progression. Two qualifications or learning programmes at the same level on the indicates that they are comparable in terms of difficulty. For example, provision credit rated at Level 7 indicates that it is more demanding than learning at Level 6. The number of Credit Points allocated to a qualification of learning programme indicates the typical amount of time that it would take a learner to achieve the learning outcomes of the qualification or learning programme. Ten notional learning hours equates to one Credit Point. 18

Expert judges for the show are drawn from industry and other educational institutions. Despite strong competition from her peers, Beth was presented with the Best Work on the Wall Award for Textiles. She said, I was really surprised to find out I was the winner.
