SKILLS SUPPORT FOR THE WORKFORCE IMPACT REPORT SUMMARY 88% of employers surveyed would recommend our training to another employer
Skills Support for the Workforce The Skills Support for the Workforce (SS4W) project was commissioned by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) using European Social Funds (ESF) from June 2013 to July The project, led by Newham College on behalf of London Capital Colleges, set out to support Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), from a range of sectors in London, to up-skill their staff. It offered progression routes into higher training and Apprenticeships ensuring that employers gained the vital workforce skills to sustain and grow their businesses. It also facilitated employer networking and promoted training opportunities. The SS4W project offered the following range of free support to SMEs: Training Needs Analysis Skills Audits Customised, flexible training Assessment and accreditation (all training led to nationally recognised qualifications) Progression routes to continue onto an Apprenticeship or higher level training Project Outcomes EMPLOYERS Number of SMEs engaged from across the Capital 3500 EMPLOYEES Number of employees enrolled on training courses 8000 Number of employees achieving a qualification 5500 Number of employees progressed onto Apprenticeships or higher level training

Scribbles Nursery Scribbles Nursery is a private day care nursery that provides early years care for babies and children between 6 months and 5 years. There has been less waste and better staff retention. I would definitely recommend the training to other businesses. Twenty-five members of staff completed the RSPH Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace at the College of North West London. Maria Zavros, the Manager of Scribbles Nursery in East Finchley, wanted to improve standards in the nursery and ensure everyone was accredited to the same level. It s essential in our business to up-skill staff where possible as employees join with varying levels of experience and qualifications. It s important to us that we re able to continually improve our services. Maria found the level 2 award to be extremely useful and since the training, staff performance and motivation has improved. Maria also expects to see an impact on profitability as a result of the training. Flat Planet Bakeries Managing director Karen Webb used the Skills Support for the Workforce programme to enrol on a Social Media Marketing Course. I really enjoyed the course and the interaction with the other attendees. If you are tasked with the social media function for your business, I would strongly recommend attending the course the staff were great and my tutor was very helpful. 3
Employee Engagement The project has delivered a range of flexible, relevant and accessible training courses to more than 8000 employees. These courses have helped employees gain nationally recognised qualifications, enabling small businesses to create a workforce that is ready to meet challenges both now and in the future. GENDER The project succeeded in reaching employees from diverse ethnic backgrounds, a range of age groups and with a good gender balance. Ninety percent of employees said they were satisfied with both the flexibility of the SS4W programme and content of the training. ETHNICITY 26.1% 47.8% White British Other Ethnic Group White Other 48.6% Female 51.4% Male 26.1% AGE 19.1% 19 to 24 years 64.9% 25 to 49 years 16% 50+ years Qualifications Delivered All of the training delivered under SS4W leads to nationally accredited qualifications needed by SME businesses and their employees. A number of flexible measures have been used, including; Saturday and Sunday workshops On-site training & assessment Bespoke provision Blended learning Distance learning 4

Local Response Fund Projects The Local Response Fund was funded by the European Social Fund and has provided fully-funded training to employers and employees with low skills in London-based SMEs. The following projects have been delivered London wide: Digital Media Westminster Kingsway College Westminster Kingsway College offered training in the creative and digital media sector particularly focussed on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and female-led SME employers and employees through a programme of more than 70 workshops, master classes and networking events. Apprenticeship Vacancies Merton Chamber of Commerce Working across 7 London boroughs, the Merton Chamber of Commerce has led a series of business-focused sessions to improve collaboration between SMEs, education and training. Higher Apprenticeships National Skills Academy Retail & People 1st People 1st have adapted their existing short Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses and trained 12 assessors to encourage the take up of Higher Apprenticeships in the Retail sector. East London Small Business Shop Newham College London The Business Lab in Stratford offers a high street facility for SMEs to access skills support for themselves and their employees. Employees from more than 350 SMEs have attended workshops and networking events and more than 150 people have undertaken accredited training courses. Hospitality Lambeth College This project has supported SMEs in the hospitality sector by raising awareness of career opportunities and how staff and employers can reduce staff turnover and increase profitability through staff training. Over 150 staff have been trained. South London SMEs South Thames College This project trained south London SMEs in effective management and marketing techniques and the benefits of these to their businesses. Renewable Technologies Newham College London Renewable Technologies has engaged with SMEs in construction and property management to promote carbon reduction and energy efficiency across the sector. City & Islington SMEs City & Islington College City and Islington College has provided workshops and training to employers and employees, with a view to developing business skills and supporting SMEs growth and sustainability. Construction Lambeth College The focus of this project was to help construction SMEs engage with significant developments in south London such as the Nine Elms regeneration project.
