2 by Corey Mason Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about what they see in the cover picture. Ask them one thing they know the moose can do. Then ask: What are things you can do? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the repetition of the phrases I can and I like to. Here are some suggestions: Book cover: Explain that this story tells about things a moose can do and likes to do. The moose in the story acts like a person. He tells the story so he uses the word I. Suggested language: The title of this book is:. Say the word do. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word do? Find the word Do on the cover of the book and put your fi nger under it. And you can see that the word has an uppercase D because it is in the title. Page 2: Turn to page 2. What can the moose do here? He can play the piano. So he says: I can play the piano. Say the word play. What sound do you hear fi rst? What letter makes the /p/ sound? Find the word play and put your fi nger under the fi rst letter, p. Page 3: On this page what will the moose say? He says: I like to read. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word like? Find the word like in the second sentence and put your fi nger under the fi rst letter, l. Page 4: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. Look at the picture on page 4. What can the moose do? What does he like to do? So what will he say here? 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found most interesting. Suggested language: Can you do any of the things the moose can do? Which things? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text The moose telling this story can play the piano, read a book, bake a cake, and paint a picture, and he likes to do all those things. He can clean his room, too, but he does not like to do that. It s fun to be able to do many things. It s not so fun to clean your room. The author uses the same two sentence patterns on each page. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Help children match one spoken to one written word while reading and pointing. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound, and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words, for example: play and stay, play and paint, paint and picture, book and cook, read and run, bake and cake, bake and bun, etc. Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose a letter, say its name, and trace the letter. Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: piano, book, bake, picture, clean. 4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on BLM 26.7 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Cause and Effect Explain to children that they can tell what happens in a story and why it happens. Model how to think about cause and effect: Think Aloud The moose can play the piano because he likes to play. He can read a book because he likes to read. He can bake a cake because he likes to bake. He can paint a picture because he likes to paint. He can clean his room, even though he doesn t like to. He has to clean his room because it gets messy. Practice the Skill Have children think about cause and effect in a different story they have read. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. Draw a picture of something else the moose might like to do at home.
